Hello,

It appears that you are in Trig Identity Hell. Stay there for a bit. There is much to learn.

What did I do wrong.

I've had a another try and got to ...

4sinxcosx +1 +2sin^2x=0
>>
>>7781168
Remember Sin(2X) = 2sin(X)cos(X)

I've been trying to think of a new science experiment. I want it to be spectacular. I don't know if it will work though. Can you do some checking of my work?

The plan is to get a string magnet and accelerate it with the help of a spring to a few hundred meters per second, then have it pass through a magnesium ring.

The magnet needs to impart enough energy into.the magnesium ring that it heats up to.The.point of ignition.

Can this work? Can the spring get the magnet going fast enough to induce enough heat in the ring to get it hot enough to.combust?

So what are you trying to do? The point of an experiment is to test a hypothesis.
>>
>>7781133

My hypothesis is that the ring will explode with material I can easily and cheaply procure.
>>
Why do you think the magnesium will ignite from a supersonic magnet passing through it?

Fucking shit /sci/. Fucking fuck fuck shit, /sci/.

Ok, this is the story :

>Be me, business economics major (europe)
>Business English course requires that I write a paper on globalization = 100% of the marks and defend it during an oral exam
>Decide to centralize around theme of globalization and Bin Laden
>Hand in paper succesfully weeks ago
>Email assistent to schedule date for oral exam (I'm a working student)
>After 2 weeks, no reply
>Email her again after 3 weeks since the first time, no reply
>Go to her office today to ask her why the fuck she hasn't been replying to my emails
>Only find an American colleague of her who phones her because time is running out
>She tells him via the phone (not directly) that she's been sick and that he has to tell me that she's reading my paper as "we" speak
>I tell that guy that I was a bit worried about the theme I chose because it's a controversial topic, especially in Europe and I'm from Arab descent and because I took sides with Bin Laden just to see what would happen
>Guy tells me not to worry and that she actually likes it when students are creative blablabla Noam Chomsky's cock...
>Go home, read e-mail
>"You've been invited by the dean to discuss your paper for the course of business english" This paper is in violation of art. X.

>mfw that fucking bitch never even asked me to discuss the paper
>mfw that American faggot cocksucking mongloid fucking lied right in my face
>mfw when I never even wanted to study business economics
>mfw I have to get up even more early that day to fit the dean's schedule while I have a goddamn examn right after that hearing

I do care though. I put in several hours but I still can't even do 1 fucking question.

What caused Bowie to get so sick? I doubt this was one of those cases where someone just gets heart attacks and cancer. I'm guessing this is a good example of why you shouldn't do hard drugs like cocaine. Liver cancer though? That's usually caused by alcohol, right?

>>
Most of these artists especially when they're young do drugs which over time trashes their systems. In later years they open doors for sneak attacks like heart or organ failures. I'm not sure if he did too much alcohol but even a small substance might have triggered it and caused a failure because the organs are damaged way too much. Instantenous death without showing obvious symptoms is usually caused by prior drug abuse that left the organs defenseless.
>>
It's all genetics coupled with your environment.
>>
Hepatitis B and C, with or without cirrhosis, is a strong risk factor for developing liver cancer. Perhaps he had contracted one of these infections from drug use.

Why the fuck is everyone so afraid of fractions? I simply do not get it. I am a masters student in mathematics and when I TA about 90% of the students will first write a problem down and then change any fraction to a decimal. What in the fuck? Why would you waste your time doing that, especially when you're not allowed a calculator on tests? WHY? Most of them will only write 1-2 decimal points too, so they have an answer which is slightly off due to round off answers.

When I ask them why they do this they don't really have an answer. I just do not understand. WHAT THE FUCK IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT FRACTIONS?

Please, /sci/, help me understand.

Because fractions are butchered in grade school. The rules are all done by rote and no one learn Euclid's algorithm to simplify them.

Consider the following:

>We have a certain stock that's worth 100 dollars on day 1. Every day, the price can either go up with 30%, or down with 25%. Both appear with probability 0.5. What's the value of the stock after 1000 days?

Now let [math]\xi_n[/math] be the price movement of the stock on day n, it can either be 1.3 or 0.75, and [math]N_n[/math] the price on day n.

The price on day 2 equals [math] N_2 = \xi_1 \cdot 100 [/math]

The price on day 3 equals [math] N_3 = \xi_1 \xi_2 \cdot 100 [/math]

It is easy to see that the price on day 1000 equals:

[eqn] N_{1000} &= \xi_1 \xi_2 \dots \xi_999 \cdot 100 \ &= 1.3 \cdot 0.75 \cdot 1.3 \dots 0.75 \cdot 1.3 \cdot 1000[/eqn]

Now 1.3*0.75 = 0.975, and, because these appear about equally, when [math]n\to\infty[/math], we get [math] \lim_{n\to\infty} N_{n} = \lim_{n\to\infty} 0.975^{n} \cdot 100 = 0[/math]. So according to this logic, the stock should go to zero around day 1000.

I also simulated it with 80 stocks on 1000 days, pic related.

HOWEVER, the expected value for one day gives us 1/2*1.3 + 1/2 * 0.75 = 1.025, so according this the price on day "infinity" should be [math]\lim_{n\to\infty} 1.025^{n} * 1000[/math] which diverges to infinity. But the price clearly doesn't diverge to infinity, eventually it always goes to zero.

So why doesn't expected value work in this problem?

Not too sure but this sounds like a variation on the St. Petersburg paradox.

Sorry, I'm also not going to answer your question, but if it's a probability, surely you can only define the possible range of values?

Hey, I'd like to study physics in a university so now I'm doing physics. I got a gap year left and then I'll be enrolling.

I'd like Youtube channel suggestions that explain physics all the way from the very beginning working towards the more demanding stuff.

From past experience, which is easier to score, SAT or ACT. I feel it's the SAT, cause high IQs like me can just take it fresh, without any prior knowledge unlike the ACT. But this is just my opinion, what do you guys think? Not sure if GRE is like SAT though.

Obviously the ACT, i took it and got a 32 first try
>>

I took it and fucked up the essay though, cause i was fuckin tired at the end of it, so i went off topic, but was considered lucky because it didn't really pull english grade down much, but nonetheless used my SAT instead for college
>>
>>7780805
Are you fuckin high? Obv the ACT, you don't have to take the shitty subject tests offered by SAT

Assuming the aliens somehow managed to stop climate change (during their exponential development phase), a potential asteroid impact, and a global nuclear war in their own planet, any advanced civilization that is capable of interstellar travel pretty much would have discovered 3D printing or some other way to create their own food and resources in a vastly sustainable and efficient manner.

Even if we get so much oil here that the costs would decrease, the carbondyoxide emissions would be catastrophic to our atmosphere.

we need other energy sources.

Define 'life'.

Happy new 4 more elements :^)

> Confirmation that four new elements – those with atomic numbers 113, 115, 117 and 118 – have indeed been synthesised has come from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (Iupac), completing the seventh row of the periodic table.

ITT We try and piss off Euclid as hard as possible. First, using curved lines, we are going to create a shape that follows the rules and parameters of a square, but is not a square.

Pretty sure Euclid would be OK with that.

Also it would help if you stated what properties and parameters a square has, is there anything apart from four equal 90 degree angles, all equal sides, consisting of only straight lines?

You can't defy Euclid.

And if you can, I'd like to see it.
