I've been trying to think of a new science experiment. I want it to be spectacular. I don't know if it will work though. Can you do some checking of my work?

The plan is to get a string magnet and accelerate it with the help of a spring to a few hundred meters per second, then have it pass through a magnesium ring.

The magnet needs to impart enough energy into.the magnesium ring that it heats up to.The.point of ignition.

Can this work? Can the spring get the magnet going fast enough to induce enough heat in the ring to get it hot enough to.combust?

>After 2 weeks, no reply
>Email her again after 3 weeks since the first time, no reply
>Go to her office today to ask her why the fuck she hasn't been replying to my emails
>Only find an American colleague of her who phones her because time is running out
>She tells him via the phone (not directly) that she's been sick and that he has to tell me that she's reading my paper as "we" speak
>I tell that guy that I was a bit worried about the theme I chose because it's a controversial topic, especially in Europe and I'm from Arab descent and because I took sides with Bin Laden just to see what would happen
>Guy tells me not to worry and that she actually likes it when students are creative blablabla Noam Chomsky's cock...

What caused Bowie to get so sick? I doubt this was one of those cases where someone just gets heart attacks and cancer. I'm guessing this is a good example of why you shouldn't do hard drugs like cocaine. Liver cancer though? That's usually caused by alcohol, right?

Why the fuck is everyone so afraid of fractions? I simply do not get it. I am a masters student in mathematics and when I TA about 90% of the students will first write a problem down and then change any fraction to a decimal. What in the fuck? Why would you waste your time doing that, especially when you're not allowed a calculator on tests? WHY? Most of them will only write 1-2 decimal points too, so they have an answer which is slightly off due to round off answers.

When I ask them why they do this they don't really have an answer. I just do not understand. WHAT THE FUCK IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT FRACTIONS?

Please, /sci/, help me understand.

Consider the following:

Now let [math]\xi_n[/math] be the price movement of the stock on day n, it can either be 1.3 or 0.75, and [math]N_n[/math] the price on day n.

The price on day 2 equals [math] N_2 = \xi_1 \cdot 100 [/math]

The price on day 3 equals [math] N_3 = \xi_1 \xi_2 \cdot 100 [/math]

It is easy to see that the price on day 1000 equals:

[eqn] N_{1000} &= \xi_1 \xi_2 \dots \xi_999 \cdot 100 \ &= 1.3 \cdot 0.75 \cdot 1.3 \dots 0.75 \cdot 1.3 \cdot 1000[/eqn]

Now 1.3*0.75 = 0.975, and, because these appear about equally, when [math]n\to\infty[/math], we get [math] \lim_{n\to\infty} N_{n} = \lim_{n\to\infty} 0.975^{n} \cdot 100 = 0[/math]. So according to this logic, the stock should go to zero around day 1000.

I also simulated it with 80 stocks on 1000 days, pic related.

HOWEVER, the expected value for one day gives us 1/2*1.3 + 1/2 * 0.75 = 1.025, so according this the price on day "infinity" should be [math]\lim_{n\to\infty} 1.025^{n} * 1000[/math] which diverges to infinity. But the price clearly doesn't diverge to infinity, eventually it always goes to zero.

So why doesn't expected value work in this problem?

Hey, I'd like to study physics in a university so now I'm doing physics. I got a gap year left and then I'll be enrolling.

I'd like Youtube channel suggestions that explain physics all the way from the very beginning working towards the more demanding stuff.

From past experience, which is easier to score, SAT or ACT. I feel it's the SAT, cause high IQs like me can just take it fresh, without any prior knowledge unlike the ACT. But this is just my opinion, what do you guys think? Not sure if GRE is like SAT though.

Assuming the aliens somehow managed to stop climate change (during their exponential development phase), a potential asteroid impact, and a global nuclear war in their own planet, any advanced civilization that is capable of interstellar travel pretty much would have discovered 3D printing or some other way to create their own food and resources in a vastly sustainable and efficient manner.

Colonizing us makes absolutely no sense....
