We are trying to reduce waste from sellafield and need to come up with an experiment of some sort. We have access to a cyclotron and access to a neutron bath.

We are drawing up blanks when it comes to finding something to test or carry out an experiment on. We do not have access to plutonium or uranium or highly radioactive waste/material.

Can anyone give us some ideas on what to do? We are looking at mainly the storage pools and the excess waste of plutonium. Any replies will be appreciated. Thank you.

All of the decay pathways are well understood. Just look them up and find ones that are either neutron or proton mediated.

Reduce which kind of waste? There is a huge range of stuff from waste material when making fuel to highly radioactive waste material from spent fuel and low level radioactive material such as used clothing.

Anyway, getting depleted uranium should not be too hard, there is a mountain of the stuff and people have no idea what to do with it.

Since I am a phycisist and have always wanted to exclaim "Stand back! I am a scientist!!" I'll offer a free suggestion: reduce waste by turning it to something useful.

Get some low level waste (avoid neutron and gamma sources) and place it on a solar cell to see how much energy you get out and how quickly the solar cell is damaged by radiation.

Next place a fluorescent material between the waste and the solar cell to convert radiation to light and lower radiation level. Again measure cell damage over time.

Literally, all the waste. Either find some use for it or help reduce it. The storage ponds are the biggest concern over here. No one literally knows what's down there. This is a huge safety concern but as of now we're running a project of sorts.

Need some sort of experimentation to do but the problem is we're not going to be handed spent fuel rods or any sort of radioactive waste. Just hoping someone can suggest some sort of experimentation to do in relation to reducing radioactive waste or decommissioning

What arrangement of 8 legs will have the most vaginas between them, assuming that vaginas will only appear between legs that are distance x apart?

arrangement on what geometry?
>>
Actually, too easy a puzzle, the following arrangement seems to be the most effective yieldings fourteen vĂ¡ginias:
_O_O_
O_O_O
_O_O_
__O__

Presumably, this solution also extends infinitely, with 7 legs being a hexagon, then further legs layering gradually to make larger hexagons.
Anyone got better geometric puzzles?

Hey /sci/, have any of you guys ever been paired with only cute girls during a lab? This happened today when I walked in twenty minutes late... late city bus caused me to miss another bus connection to get there on time.

This saved me from working with the neckbeard partner I've been working with.

It was a simple excel(which they had no clue how to use) lab and one of the girls suggested I should be in their group every time. I feel like this was a small win for me as my aspergers is strong and I normally wouldn't have worked with them if the professor didn't suggest I help them because I'm familiar with Excel. I'll gladly take the workload each time for these fine young madams. How has your experiences been in similar situations?

Would you rather work with people with similar intellect as yourself or my preference, work with cute but less intellectual females? To avoid sounding sexist, I'm aware they can be intellectual too but not in this case.

NP problems are renowned for being exponentially difficult to solve with greater variables. if someone were to bring them into P time, they would be solvable with far less computational power, and not with exponential increase in difficulty.

the conjecture of P=NP is that if you can bring an NP problem into P space, you can bring ALL NP problems into P space. this would mean that it's possible to break cryptography's entropy barrier with far less computational resources than anticipated.

I earned my physics degree with a math minor this past may from an average university with a GPA of 3.27. The thing is I barely tried and got by with low B's and C's for the first 3 years, then got tired of being a retard and stepped my shit up. I then received mostly straight A's and the highest grade in a few classes such as QM 2 and calc 3 (ez mode). I never did research with professors or anything but now my problem is, should I go for a PhD?

I have an awful grasp on basic physics because I never tried in the introductory courses, though I could fix that with a few months of dedication. I have no research experience and a 3.27 GPA from an average university. Is there any hope? Any similar stories on being a scrub for a while then getting shit together and advancing in a field? Thanks

Is psychology a real science? Are those so-called "kinds of intelligence" and "everyone smart in someway" real or just propaganda made by psychologist to appeal and get money from people?

> Are those so-called "kinds of intelligence" and "everyone smart in someway" real or just propaganda made by psychologist to appeal and get money from people?

I don't think you know what psychologists actually research and do. I'm not a psychology major myself, but some of my friends are. The research they are doing alongside their peers and advisors is actually quite interesting and diverse. It varies from the "soft" spheres like interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and social-science stuff; to more cognitive and behavioral focused areas like addiction, learning, and memory formation; the clinical areas of neuroscience, brain development, psychopathlogy; to math-heavy areas like computational modeling, statistics, and organizational theories.

The students going into cognitive programs and behavioral programs seem the most /sci/ to me. Clinical programs are /sci/, but the students going into them are just going into it because they think it will land them a decent job (not realizing the market is over-saturated). Social psychology and pedagogical psychology is a joke.

>>7786889
Most of the impetus in psychology research seems to come from three things: autism, substance abuse, and the military. You're guaranteed to find at least one person doing something with autism in every psych department, along with another guy hooking wires up the the craniums of depressed drunks and seeing what happens. The military seems to put money into psych research all the time -- a couple people I know are actually going to an airforce base over the summer to do research on learning.

To the OP's question: given how seriously psychology researchers and publications take research methods and quantitative data, I would consider psychology to be a real science. These qualities clearly distinguish it from the social sciences.

Side note: those cognitive and behavioral guys I mentioned earlier prefer to be called "cognitive scientists" and "behavioral scientists."

Hey /sci/,
I need some help.
When I was in 8th grade, my father died, and in order for my family (my mother&my little sister) to at least have something to eat I had to start doing different jobs.

This resulted in me falling behind on my school subjects, especially maths.

You see, my math teacher is a really nice guy, he would always write me good grades, because he knew the situation I was in and wanted to help in any way possible.
This, however, backfired greatly.
My mom recently got a job which allows me to finally focus on my studies, but I fear it is too late. I have about 4 months to learn all there is in maths if I want to even have a chance of getting in a good uni.

Every bachelors I want to get in to requires me to pass the standardized maths test with flying colors.

This for me is an impossible task, since my math knowledge is pretty much non-existent past 8th grade. I have no idea what simple(supposedly, I have no idea really) things such as quadratic equations are.
But I want to god damnit.

So this is where I turn to you guys.

Any tips on how to go through with this would be appreciated.
Really, any book recommendation, any video tutorials, ANYTHING would be helpful.

I'm desperate, depressed because I really believe I'll be a failure in life, but god damnit I'm determined to do this, and I'll do whatever it takes for me to accomplish this pretty much impossible task. Even if I fail I won't give up, and I'll try again next year.

I've been watching khan academy videos for about two weeks, and so far they've been really helpful, however since I'm starting from the most basic of things(fundamental level), I don't think I'll be able to do things in time.

This is the test from last year : http://www.zamatura.eu/files/dzi/matematika/2015/matura-matematika-2015.pdf .
Use google translate to translate the page from Bulgarian to English(it fucks up the symbols, so you'll have to switch tabs.)

I need to get at least 79 points in it. Help.

~~~Cheers
By the way, I won't have access to a computer till tomorrow night, so I'll check up on thread then.
Thanks to anyone who even takes their time to read this.
>>
First off, maybe you can't do it. That's okay. A lot of Unis have entry examinations that will assess your math level. Since that is the case, there's no shame in taking a year off, studying on your own/at a JC and then applying to the Uni you want to go to.
Second, Khan Academy will be just about the most efficient way to do this- reading textbooks will almost certainly take more time to do than KA.
Thirdly,
a quadratic equation is one of the form
[math]
f(x) = Ax^2 + Bx + C
[/math]
with the solutions
[math]
x = \frac{-B \pm \sqrt{B^2 - 4AC}}{2A}
[/math]
where B, A and C are the coefficients from the first equation.
Hello /sci/ I was wondering if a kind Anon could assist me for a second.
The trouble I have is with the question is:
A production formula is given as q = 5Log(1+(Qa^1/2)Qk)
Where Qa is the Quanity of labour and Qk is the quantity of Capital and Q is the total produced amount.
The question is as following:
Make the isoquant with Qa = 16 and Qk = 6 and Qa should be on the X Qk on y axis.
The price of one unit of labour is 4 units and that of capital is 2.
Now I have to make a chart of this but I have no clue how to integrate it.
So far I have solved q = 5Log(1+(Qa^1/2)Qk)
Where Q= 2 and Qk= 24/Sqrt(Qa)
How do I go from there?
Many thanks
First time I hear about this.
I won't lie, it looks awesome. Actually, I think this is exactly what I've been looking for.
Tried using Spyder before, it was ok. But I think this might be even better.
Can I write other python scripts using this, or is it strictly math only? I mean, there's an editor and a console, you can pretty much use it for what you need?
Wait, does this have it's own IDE, or is it something like Notebook, you run it from your browser only?
Applied math works very well without "pure" math.
>>
>>7800477
There wouldn't have been any applied math without it being "pure" in some sense.
First it is considered pure. Then it gets applied. Simple as that. Both are needed, both are getting work. None is better than the other.
You babbies better stop this debate.
