When scientists talk about information, what do they mean?

It's not information in the sense we're used to - our memories, documentation of what happened in the past, etc -, or is it?

Show an instance of a scientist "talking about information". They wouldn't, they would specify what the fuck they were talking about otherwise be labelled as useless hacks.

Like most words, "information" is vague and contextual. I can use it to refer to data as it would be conceptualised in an OS, use it to refer to some divisible component in DNA, I use it to refer to strings of text.

This is a shit thread, stop.
>>
>>9097056
I think you're wrong. Take for example the "information" paradox of blackholes. If this term was solely used by hacks then persons such as Einstein and Hawking wouldn't waste their time talking about it.
>>
Information is one of those concepts that has fallen into the mystical realm of popular science. It literally just means how many bits (or other units depends on the base of your log) it takes to encode a message.

"What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little cuck? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the Wharton School of Business, and I’ve been involved in numerous secret under-the-table negotiations, and I have over 300 confirmed deals. I am trained in Twitter warfare and I’m the top winner in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another triggered snowflake. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit about me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of alt-right across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, hypocrite. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your livelihood. You’re fucking dead, weakling. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can ruin you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my bare lawsuits. Not only am I extensively trained in corporate blackmail, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Armed Forces and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little negative press “covfefe” was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit greatness all over you and you will drown in it. You’re fucking dead, irrelevant clown." -- Donald Trump

Basically a little baby.
Back in the 60s men actually walked on the moon.

Now they're saying maybe we'll make it to Mars by 2050
We're never leaving earth again.

If 50% of people are above average, then 50% are below average.
But how can this be the case, surely SOME must be "average" right?
Would it not be the % at 50% that makes up the most "average", and 49.999...% oh either side that dictate what is "above average" and "below average"?

Not if you're using discrete people or your distribution is a weird shape. Alice is 5 feet tall. Bob is 6 feet tall. Average is 5.5 feet but 0 people are that height.

I don't mean to come here to whine but I have to get something off my chest. I was hoping that this crowd could give me some insight since I know there are a lot of brains here.

I seem to have some sort of inferiority complex in terms of accomplishments. I'm quite possibly the most educated of all of my colleagues in terms of degrees, work experience, etc etc...

Military veteran, three Master's degrees, and even then it still seems like it's "not enough". I still think I have to prove it to myself and others that I'm worthy. I know that this is my own problem and probably has to do with insecurities on my part, but I wanted to ask if any of you have also felt this way at any time.

My wife says that what I'm feeling is silly. However, I can't help but feel that no matter what I've accomplished in life that I still haven't accomplished much of anything at all.

Thanks for reading.

ha. you are going to need more skills than just computer graphics to get a job anywhere. Even if you landed something heavily involved with computer graphics, like 3d animation, you'd need to have a good feel for things like physics.

I wonder if parasites and infections have a greater effect on our minds than we realize.

Up to half of the world's population could be infected with toxoplasmosis.
Beyond the initial symptoms, how could we determine if this parasite is actually effecting our moods and decision making? It seems too difficult to quantify our qualitative moods, and that statistics of the potentially linked effects would only come about when serious consequences result from our actions. Our major life decisions could come down to this parasite's influence over us...

And what about "ATCV-1"? It supposedly can produce changes in your cognitive abilities.

Usually when I think of human diseases, I think of how they impact the body. However, an infectious agent which subtlety changing the mind...there's something about it that both fascinates and alarms me. It seems like it is within the realm of possibilities that we will eventually encounter a parasite (whether natural or artificially created) which can take complete control over our minds without killing us.

Imagine

If somehow,

some

way

we could compare people with and without it, or a person before and after infection

and

if this parasite is actually effecting our moods and decision making, it would be apparent, and if it wasnt,,,,,,,
it is not important.

*Give me (you)s and thoughtful replies and don't let my thread 404 edition.
*Is my idea possible? How far away are we from controlling ants? Do you like my picture? How much energy would it take to power my idea(1 million ants)? How does this compare to a car engine? Keep in mind I have no idea what I'm talking about.

First time posting.

https://askabiologist.asu.edu/content/ant-factoids

>According to different estimates, ants can carry 10 - 50 times their body weight!
>How? Because ants are so small, their muscles have a greater cross-sectional area (they are thicker) relative to their body size than in larger animals. This means they can produce more force pound-for-pound

How? Why do thicker muscles lift more? Does that mean that with the same total muscle mass, the thicker muscle lifts more than the thinner muscle?

Also, I had a thought.
Imagine you could control ants.
Imagine that you have a glass sheet that's 1 square meter, and has a negligible weight. Then imagine putting a bunch of ants under the sheet, lets say the sheet fits 1 million ants directly under it's surface, if ants are 5mm long.
Then if each ant weighs 5 milligrams, it would be able to lift 250 milligrams. In total, the ants would be able to lift 250 million milligrams, or about 550 pounds.

Imagine the possibilities! Here I am in pic related. That could be ANTS carrying me(and a few other people)!

Have you ever wondered why bodybuilders don't compete in Olympic-level weightlifting contests, despite having ton of muscle? That's because they train in a way that results in denser muscle mass that is good for aesthetics but less good for strength.
>>
>>9095976
what are you saying?
Is it in response to this?
>How? Why do thicker muscles lift more? Does that mean that with the same total muscle mass, the thicker muscle lifts more than the thinner muscle?

Nature is not scale invariant OP.

When the size of an animal is multiplied by x, its volume is multiplied by x^3 AND SO IS ITS MASS IN FIRST APPROXIMATION.

This is why these comparisons are irrelevant, the energy a huge animal needs to move is far more tremendous. The resistance of hard structures like bines etc are affected.
For instance elephants cannot jump.

So I've been studying some basic chemistry and I've got a question about why compounds and molecules form. I understand the basics of electrons being transferred to balance the overall atomic charge, but why would two neutral atoms such as Na and Cl not just stay as neutrally charged atoms? Why does an ionic bond form at all? Why does the electron transfer happen? If atoms at a basic level are neutrally charged, what causes compounds or molecules to even exist?
10 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Electrostatic attraction. While electrons do move around, the number of protons I the nucleus remain the same. The electron transfer creates positive and negative ions that hold each other together.
>>
>>9095856
>why would two neutral atoms such as Na and Cl not just stay as neutrally charged atoms?
Because the movement of electrons is energetically favorable.
>>
>>9095856
Each atom is more stable as ion rather than the neutral state. The reason for this is because each atom is the most stable when it has enough electrons to "fill" all orbitals fully.
