How do you explain this /sci ?

the square root of 1 is not only 1, but also -1. so there's no contradictory in the last equality

What is the possible way to have a VR technologies using your brain as a controller ?

show sucked after the aincrad arc desu
It's probably not too difficult. They already have stuff like paralyzed people who can move a cursor around a screen from electors on their brains.
So is there ANY degree left that is not overrun?
I guess medicine? Anything else?

by 2025, CS is going to experience the biggest industry growth known to mankind
>>7847855
Why 2025?
>>7847828
No.
As long as the government keeps pleading "STEM and skills shortages" , virtually every field of work will be swamped by applications.
Considering that Bernie Sanders wants to make "education free for all", thats exactly whats going to happen, but worse. I won't be surprised if employers soon start requiring a Masters degree just for a cleaner's position.
I cannot graduate community college, never mind university, without passing/and or showing proficiency in intermediate algebra.
I took pre-algebra, failed it in 7th grade, took algebra 1 in 8th -- failed it too, and took algebra 1 again in high school and got passed on a C after having a math tutor do all my homework in class, and letting me cheat on the exam (this is a charter school, only way that could've happened).
I start taking community college classes. Had an accident one year into CC; mild brain injury, migraines, tremors, anxiety. Took me 4 years, taking classes on and off, or half time due to health -- I'm at 70 transferable units (need 120 for Bachelor's degree). I tried elementary algebra, lasted 6 weeks into the class and was at 50% and wasn't getting any of the harder material, so I withdrew.
They won't let me have AA or transfer until I show mastery of intermediate algebra. My brain just can't into algebra. I told all the right people my story, and it was just a bunch of "so sorry hear about that, but our hands are tied, the rules are the rules.
How can a person like me learn math? What should I do?
That sucks anon. I'm afraid I can't really help you but I hope you will make it somehow.
Pls, can someone give me a solution. I'm hoping someone with a high IQ here can help me resolve this obstacle.
>>7847768
The only advice I can give is practice. Have you checked Khan Academy?
Algebra is pretty mechanical, so yeah, practice like hell. And check Khan Academy.
Why do they want to prove so badly that FTL travel is not possible? Do they never want us to leave earth and colonise other solar systems?
>>7847630
Because they don't have any idea what to do if grav waves don't exist
>>7847630
>boo hoo no FTL
Shit only matters if you plan on coming back.
>>7847630
>Do they never want us to leave earth and colonise other solar systems?
Yes, exactly so.
What are some advances/technologies we could gain from the fungi kingdom?
>>7847528
Are you familiar with the term "living nanotechnology"?
Because that's literally what it is.
>>7847563
Go on....
>pic related
no seriously, I'm surprised we don't invest more in the Fungus. Its a living breathing organism that exists everywhere. Capable of bringing beauty and destruction.

hey guys
let's say that somebody finds something like "the theory of prime numbers", what kind of monetary rewards could that person expect to receive? could he remain anonymous?
in other words, i did kind of find the theory of primes. i fully understand why they exist but i don't really want to make it public if i won't get paid/have to give up my anonymity. what do i do?
>what are donations
>what is asking to remain anonymous
>>7847494
>the theory of prime numbers
Is that anything like winning algebraic geometry?
Yes, there are many applications for such a thing.
Can the mind survive or prevent the death of the universe?

Is the indeterminism in QM relevant to the question of free will?
Isn't the indeterminism going away on neuron-level, and even if, how should we able to control the indeterminism?
also: general free will thread, old one is 404
>>7847078
Randomness or determinism, not much evidence for free will, unless you accept the Lord into your heart and accept that some things science will never understand
No, free will is a function of the brain.
>>7847084
Which lord?
There are so many, should I follow one of the premade lords, and if yes, which one, or should I just make up my own definition of the lord?
A staple in scifi is for an advanced species to use energy weapons over kinetic ones because I suppose energy weapons look advanced or something but wouldnt energy weapons ultimately be very impractical?
Well sci?
Energy weapons are a meme
Kinetic weapons are superior in almost every way
>>7847047
>Energy weapons
>Kinetic weapons
>>7847040
i suppose it would depend on the application.
also the energy density of batteries of hypothetical future weapons.
a focused beam of plasma would require a metric fuckton of energy to produce, however if it could be sustained some advantages include:
>sustained fire reduces operator error, you don't shoot at a target so much as a general region
>faster "projectile" speed means no need to compensate for effects such as gravity and wind resistance for long range shots
>depending on efficency of hypothetical energy source could be lighter to carry than convential weapon + ammo
>again depending on battery could last longer between reloads allowing for longer sustained fire
the future of weaponry is with self guided munitions and rail cannons though tbqhwyfam
Any engineering guys here? I'm MechE in major and stuff, and I'm doing well in my classes, it's just that everything is so tedious and unexciting. Any of you guys experienced the same thing? What did you do, stick with it and wait for it to pick up or change majors?
I just switched to physocs. Honestly being an accredited engineer isnt worth the boredom of cadwork and punching in values for load specs of a deadbolt. Im gonna make less money but i think that doing what you love is more valuable.
>>7847032
This is the reason why I chose not to go with ME I'm ChE and we really focus on a lot more theoretical than practical tho I have yet to take any reactor design courses
Was debating someone on whether or not there were inherent physiological differences between the male and female brain. Looking to be informed on whether or not there has been any trusted studies on this, and if I am wrong in saying men and women are inherently different in terms of brain chemistry. This (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/confirmed-theres-no-such-thing-male-or-female-brain-180957417/?no-ist) seems to be the only article I can find on the matter, but I can't imagine it being a full explanation of the subject or the only source material on this. Are testosterone and estrogen the only factors that determine masculinity/femininity? Help me out sci
I don't know myself, but it is a controversial topic, so any articles might be biased. It might be good to see if there are differences in the brains of male/female apes or other animals, since those might not be obfuscated by political correctness as much.
>>7846995
You won't get an answer, because no one will do serious research on the topic for the same reason that we won't see any serious attempt to decode the haplotypes that point out racial distinctions in our lifetime - it's not really all that great of an investment (what are you going to sell from your results, pamphlets that say "gurls r dumb?" No one will want to publish your findings unless they can bank off of them) and it's also not great for the pursuit of happiness. Honestly, is it all that important if men are smarter, stronger, or more resilient than women? It's not really that much of a difference, and suffering that slight inefficiency for the sake of protecting the happiness of others is part of what makes us human.
>>7847332
It is important if one group is less inclined to study STEM and there is this assertion going around that men are oppressing women by being men. And the reason we won't get a proper answer is because dishonest ideologues who are in the establishment have too mush to lose if we dispel their myths which they bank on.
Is it possible to start 'terraforming' venus, by engeneering plant cells to float around in the upper atmosphere and convert CO2 into O2 over millions of years to bring down temperatures? Obviously they would need Genetic Engineering to survive the acidic upper atmosphere.
no water on Venus
barely a magnetosphere
A venus day is almost half an Earth year.
crust is thin and unstable
no moon, no tidal forces

That's a damn shame, all that land. Sigh.
Betelgeuse is a Red Giant star easily visible in clear nights sky in the constellation of Orion. It is located 640 ly from Earth. This star can become a supernova at ANYTIME... Maybe it has even may have happened. Who knows.. When it happens, it will shine as bright to be visible in the sky during the day.

would be nice if it happened while we are alive

can the jet of betelgeuse reach us?

Does the average good STEM student have the ability to work on one piece of work for 8 hours in a row? Or is it fine that I lose focus on stuff after usually no more than 2 hours?
>>7846853
there shouldn't be any classes where you're working on a subject/assignment for more than 8 hours unless it's a term paper.
You should work on something for an hour tops and take a 10 minute or so break before going back to it. this should give you enough time to re-focus
>>7846856
that's pleb tier, an hour is not enough time to get properly into a subject and is not optimal use of time imo.
I prefer 3-4 hour sessions with small breaks where I leave the desk and just think about what I'm learning.
>>7846853
I doubt the average STEM student can but I know lots that are capable of that. Although I do go to the most autistic uni in the country so I'm not sure how it compares to other places.
>>7846871
assuming you take 4 classes and a lab, that gives you about 10 hours a day to do stuff, a little more if you sleep.
there's no way you study in 3-4 hour sessions for all of your subjects every day
since you're clearly procrastinating, why don't you relax, and do an hour a day per subject per week. this doesn't count time for homework or projects, this is just studying. i guarantee you'll get more out of your studies than just cramming every other day
