How am I fucking up the Venn Diagram?

The two statements are logically equivalent but I am getting a Venn Diagram that says they are not.
31 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>

Why is the graph on a chalkboard white on a black background when on a computer screen or piece of paper, it's black with a white background? Obviously they're opposites...

Math doesn't care about our coordinate systems or methods of drawing it.
The venn diagram has no meaning except what you assign to it. Is shaded 'marked' or is the unshaded 'marked'?
It ultimately depends on how you draw it, and in one, you seem to have done one and the opposite in the other.
>>
>>7910705
Just because two statements are true doesn't mean that they are equal.
>>
>>7910713
I'm using contraption in logic to get from the first statement to the second, they should be logically equivalent.

All non-A are B
(flip subject and predicate)
All B are non-A
(replace with term complements)
All non-B are A

Should a High School math teacher be required to take courses in Real Analysis and Abstract Algebra?
43 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Yes. I mean, they don't have to be Ph.Ds or anything but some understanding of what is going on should be required.
>>
>>7909878
No. Personally if I was a high school math teacher and had studied analysis, it would cause me to have an autism attack to teach shitty high school calculus.

>abstract algebra
Romanian here - half of 12th year in hs is dedicated to abstract algebra, so I'd asume yes

Heres a logic puzzle for you.

There are 6 face down cards, labelled 1 to 6. You and your opponent each take a card at random. At the end of the game, whoever has the highest numbered card wins.

Your card is 2.

Your opponent looks at his card, and then offers you a trade. Do you take it?
41 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
No, he is almost certainly has an 1 or else he wouldn't offer to trade.
>>
Even if there were 100 cards, labelled 1 to 100 and you got a 2 it would still be a stupid idea to accept the trade.
>>

In that case it wouldn't tho

Living things are mostly water: H2O.

When they get buried, they become hydrocarbons. But coal and oil don't have O atoms. Where does the Oxygen from the water go?

I assume it would evaporate or leave the body during decomposition.

I'm not sure what you think coal is, but I've included a partial structure here for you with source

study CS because im interested in how a computer works and I want to learn about the challenges in the field at the moment.

All the other people:
> I want to make an app and get rich
> I want to be video game programmer
> I dont care about anything just tell me how I earn money as a Codemonkey
> Im an autist sperg thats actually interested but I have an IQ of 80 and/or Im a Social outcast
> Im fat and I dont know how to shower
> Im cool but stupid

why does it have to be like that?

You forgot me, smart but lazy.
>>
CS is popular, has perspective and is viewed by many as the road to the money, therefore it will be plagued by retards.

On the bright side, once you get to the grad school, you will meet more likeminded people, who are actually knowledgeable in the field and not cancerous.

What do you guys think about having the ability to choose your own offspring's characteristics. For example: eye colour, hair colour, muscle fibres, etc.

It should be a human right, for those that can afford it of course.
>>
>>7909166
I'm upset that future generations will be so smart that they'll effectively make us obsolete. But I recognise that it's inevitable and that a smarter human population overall is actually a good thing.
>>
>>7909166
It would be so much better than now. People are afraid because they subconsciously think that you wouldn't let your child have the "choice" to be born like nature would have wanted to (?). This is quite clearly absolutely retarded, and I don't think that people that come into this world stupid, ugly and prone to diseases are happy because of le nature meme.

It would lower sufference and therefore hate between humans (but everyone should be able to do it; if it's only for the rich than it will only widen the gap between ubermensch and shitty poor people. This would be very very, very fucking bad).

Hey sci, so i found out today that i suck at math in general. I'm planning to restart learning from the beginning. Thinking about doing all the khan exercises and watch youtube videos. So here's the question. I've read all the sci wiki which explains good math book for calculus and beyond. But honestly it's too overwhelming. So many books to choose from and i cant seem to pin point on the right one. Which book do you recommend for calculus?

If your struggling with the mechanics of it, watch Patrickjmt videos on YouTube on the stuff you need help with

Also do all of your homework. Change the numbers around. Change your trig functions from sin to cos or something. Test yourself. Get the pattern of finding a derivative.

Understanding the mechanics of it will get you far enough to pass the class. That's all. If you want to ace it, you're going to have to read your textbook and the books that the other guy above recommended.

I had an argument with a fellow researcher recently on whether music is a worthwhile field to pursue and whether universities should be allocating budgets in this fields direction.

His argument was that music is extremely important to society in many aspects including but not limited to communication, and is on par with theater and literature and so studying it to improve music pieces is beneficial to society.

I'd like to hear your thoughts about this subject, your field and any other related background would be appreciated.

>>
>>7908221
You can certainly argue that if literature gets a department, music should get something.
>>
it should be seperated in music theory and 'applied music' at least like art and art history are seperated.

come to think graphicdesign could be considered art theory but I guess noone bothered to make this connection
>>
>>7908221
If fucking women studies and all of that useless crap gets their own respective departments, music should, too. Music theory is definitely not something you can entirely learn overnight.

Is a black hole even made out of matter? What are made of?
What if the matter collapses into itself to the point you can't distinguish the elementary particles? I mean, sure we can't do it anyway, but what if matter and antimatter stop differing in a fundamental way?

If not, the it's going to be a clusterfuck of insane size, considering how much energy releases the particle-antiparticle annihilation, and the masses of black holes

What are /sci/'s thoughts on state schools?

It's a familiar argument. Could it be better to go to a state school and bust out an engineering degree for 20k a year than to go to a university for 2-3x the dough, but have research opportunities and generally smarter peers? It's a question that still bothers me. I'm in California where there are some pretty good state schools (pic related) but even then, a state school is a state school.

I'd appreciate your input.

>>
>>7906752
I'm in CA as well and I'm going to assume by "state schools" you mean Cal States and not the UC system which has many top engineering programs.

I think a lot of this depends on how well the programs are regarded. Most Cal States aren't particularly impressive but SLO for instance has a good reputation in some engineering fields.

I definitely fall into the camp that thinks the quality of your peers can be hugely important and the UC's can have a big advantage here, this isn't to say there aren't some very good students at even mediocre schools though.

Research opportunities can be a mixed bag. You'll definitely have more prestigious research/advisors at UC's, but I wouldn't be surprised if you might have an easier time doing research as an undergrad early on at a Cal State vs a UC.

You also have the issue of what your plans are after undergrad. If you want to graduate with minimal dept as quickly as possible and join the workforce Cal States might be the better option. UC's will look better on grad school apps though.

If cost is a big concern you could always do what I did and go the CC route before transferring. Nothing beats that from a cost perspective but you have to be willing to deal with the hell that is CC for a few years.

Is this a dilemma you're currently facing?

Ok. I was just thinking. What do you think would happen inside the mind of a psychopath if they became self aware of their psychopathy at a young age. The appropriate term for a child would be callous unemotional but you get my point. What if some how a teenager(let's say 14) becomes aware that they are different and figure out they are callous unemotional. What do you think they would do? Would they think of it as cool or beneficial and try to further their skills or would they become confused as to why they are that way and develope a longing for an emotional connection? What if they do long for an genuine emotional connection? Would they ever succeed?

Just a general food for thought conversation thread.

Most psychopaths are aware of their condition, they just don't care and see it as an advantage. The smart ones learn how to hide it and act normal.

If they long for emotional connection then they were never psychopathic in the first place.

the vapor is super toxic, touching it without gloves isn't recommended, but it absorbs really slowly into the skin, you'll be k

Nice trips, and honestly improvements in Big Data, as well as the mass adoption of it's usage, will probably be nearly as helpful for society without any of the (already infinitesimal) risk.

Also, what do you think of tensor flow?
