Is the country where you take your PhD especially relevant?
My former MSc supervisor says Spain PhDs are shit tier, but honestly, I think he might be biased and might have interest in keeping me to apply for a PhD with him in my country. That is pretty much out of the question, since I want to either go abroad, or stay in a R&D position in a company as I am currently.
The situation is as follows: I currently have two pending applications in my field for Spain, one I need to give a yes or no answer pretty soon, and the other awaiting a final response (both of which my supervisor is discouraging heavily), and one awaiting any response for now in the Netherlands.
I don't necessarily need help deciding, but I'd like to know your opinion on how the country affects the quality of your PhD and in what way.

Without having any knowledge of the university that awarded it, I tend to put all degrees from EU nations on equal, favorable footing. The same goes for US, Soviet, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, Japanese and South Korean PhDs. I'm a bit leery of modern Russian, Chinese, and South/Central American degrees, and I discount Indian, African, and Arab degrees almost entirely.

It might just be personal bias on my part, and it also might be due to my field. As an American, I generally deal with chemists that have US PhDs, but I've also met Japanese PhDs that are on par with their American counterparts.
Why hasn't there been a breakthrough in any kind of medicine since the 60's?

Given a d-dimensional array M and an integer n, find vectors [math]V_{i,j}[/math] such that

approximates M as good as possible (in the least squares sense).
For d=2 the problem is easy: M is just a matrix and we find the vectors by looking at the eigenvectors of [math]MM^T[math] that belong to the largest eigenvalues.
But for d>2 i am completely clueless.
Is this problem familiar to someone? Maybe knowing tensor algebra would help to solve this?

yes that is the obvious approach, but this results in a system of polynomial equations which don't really tell much... in the 2d case these equations reduce to finding the eigenvectors of a matrix, which is a well studied problem. I was hoping for something similiar for higher dimensions to show up, but I have no idea how you would even define eigenvectors of higher dimensional arrays (and in a way that solves this problem!)

For Math, I go over everything (if there's something to derive, I do it my self because i find it provides greater insight than just reading the bottom line) then do exercises, starring ones that I will come back to before an exam if they are hard to understand.

A tensor is set of quantities that obey certain transformation laws relating the bases in one generalized coordinate system to those of another and involving partial derivative sums. vectors are simple tensors.
Because of this you can think of tensors as a generalized form of vectors.
A tensor is contravariant when it transforms according to the following equation

Note that i and j are indcies not exponents. A tensor is covariant if it transforms according to the following equation

A mixed tensor is a tensor that contains both contravariant indices and covariant indices.
A tensor should be thought of as a multi linear operator that transforms (between different coordinate systems) according to certain rules (to be detailed below).
A rank 2 tensor takes two vectors as inputs. This gives it two indicies, which can be covariant, contravariant, or one of each (mixed).
Covariant index transforms by the inverse jacobian and contravariant transforms by the jacobian.
A covariant index takes a contravariant vector as its argument, and vice versa. This is because the contravariant transforms by the jacobian and the covariant transforms as the jacobian, so when they are multiplied together their transformation matrices cancel out and the result is coordinate independent.
