What would happen if you plug a volcano?

Ever heard of the Mount St. Helens eruption?
>>

it would un-plug itself by erupting explosively

most volcanism is caused by hotspots / mantle plumes, which is not something humanity is capable of doing anything about

>stop drinking coffee on Saturday

How can people say coffee is healthy when it affects sleep? It just seems like a big lie.

Sleep 11.5 is extremely bad for your health so apparently coffee is quite healthy.
>>
If you drink it in the morning it doesn't effect that nights sleep

How come the world isn't deterministic when math is?

Because math is based on logic.
And logic breaks down on the quantum scale.

Who says the world isnt deterministic? Its an open question at this point

Our understanding breaks down at that scale, not necessarily the underlying logic

I only found out about this recently but have there been any other attempts to create maps of surface or cloud features on other Extrasolar planets like Kepler 7b in the pic, or was it just a case of luck and circumstances?

I'm really curious about this sort of thing. I love images of planets.

you do realize they are just artist renditions of what extrasolar planets could be like and not actual photos right.

So a few hours ago I just rolled my ankle during the jogging warmup before Muay Thai class. I've rolled and sprain my ankle plenty of times before, but this time I heard a crack when I did it. It's real swollen, but I'm still able to walk and stand on it without much pain. In fact, it was one of the least painful times I rolled my ankle, but the crack has me worried. I won't be able to see a doctor for a few days, so I figured I'd ask for medbros opinions and advice on taking care of it before I see the doctor (might be a week because my insurance coverage was incorrectly dropped and in process of sorting it out)

>>

Its not a fracture. If you rolled BJJ and competed you'd know a fracture when you heard it, it's loud. If you felt a pop, it's a ligament/tendon just being separated from where it was anchored.

You sprained your ankle, more than likely your LM. It's okay, you just popped (a portion) of the ligament loose because you hyper-extended it rolling it on a mat.

Just go easy on it, don't flex it, it should be """okay"""" in a week and you can gently kick your acquaintances in the head like you'd usually do.
>>
>>7964522
It wasn't a pop, it was a distinct cracking sound. And I've put on extra weight since I last trained seriously, has me worried

I need 9 to 12 hours a day, seriously.

I kinda dislike reality and really rather enjoy my lucid dreams. Even when they are nightmarish or horrible, it's better than reality.

I work 12 hours a day and it's serious, physical effort. I consume a ton of caffeine.
>>
>>7964501
It depends. I can sleep less than two and spend all day running around and swimming (like yesterday), with energy to spare after. Or I can sleep nine and still be fuzzy (most often after I didn't do anything the day before, because then that much sleep isn't good for you).

Not being a coffee addict sure helps your sleep and energy levels, though.
>>
>Image related

Well, I regulary sleep 6 hours because I sleep very late and I have to wake up early but when I don't have the need to wake up that early I sleep rather 10 hours or more.

We're going to be analyzing Weird Al song lyrics as if Weird Al himself were an unwitting prophet. You can frame the lyrics as analyzing any time period, the only rule is that you can't directly quote any of his song lyrics. Titles are otherwise acceptable, but sometimes bad form.

What I need from you is a list of philosophical inquiries that one might ask while taking Weird Al lyrics seriously. If you're feeling very bold, you can even frame it in the form of a potential title for a (supposedly) academic paper. I don't expect anyone to write any summary/forward for such paper, but I certainly won't refuse any efforts spared for the sake of this experiment.

By the end of this we should have a fairly comprehensive body of work for analyzing potential future events ("prophecies"). It is entirely permissible to occasionally conflate Al Gore with Weird Al to throw off future historians, but keep it to song lyric analysis.

I'll start:
>Mushroom Clouds: Literal or Allegory? End Times in The Songs of Weird Al

The idea is to create a baseline for obviously non-prophetic works so we have a basis to refute pseudoprophecy in other bodies of work.

Okay /sci/, I've got a problem.
I'm a second year masters student. I will be graduating in December if all goes well.

I have an ongoing assignment for one of my classes with a professor who is relatively new to the department. We'll call him K. He was brought in and promoted over the heads of several other individuals (including my adviser). My adviser and K do not get along very well, and have clashed several times in the last year.

This ongoing assignment has been a struggle from day one. It was supposed to be a group project--I was informed that I would have to work on it myself (essentially doubling the amount of work that would be required of me). I have applied myself as best as I know how, and even though it's a topic outside my expertise and that I'm relatively new to I've worked hard at it. I've met with him multiple times to make sure I have the project moving in the direction he wants it, and to try and correct problems before I hand in each segment.

Without fail, each time, he tells me that I'm on track, that it's looking good, so on and so forth. I hand it in, and then get back low grades (need at least a B to pass, and he keeps giving me 80's and 75's).

He told me to fix certain things in the first part of the project for an improved grade--I fixed the indicated areas, and resubmitted it. The project was returned to me with the same grade, my work "unacceptable" for unspecified reasons.

/sci/, I work hard. I'm a good student. This is really tearing me up. Why is he doing this? What am I missing?

>>7963580
why dont you ask him to explain it
>>
You need to document this shit. The next time he does it, go to your advisor and then the dean cause this guy sounds like an asshat I had to deal with.
>>
It may be worth noting that I have shown my work to other students in the class who are doing well, and who I respect as good, hardworking, people. They have indicated that they're impressed with the level of work I'm producing and that they don't understand what I'm missing.

I have an interest in astronomy and physics and two sisters. One of my sisters says we shouldn't fund the space program beyond satellites because it's not worth the expense when we could use the money to help poor people, etc. The other says not to because "it's such hubris to just assume we should spread our race to other planets" even if the other planets are barren of all life.

What can I tell them to persuade them otherwise? Pic unrelated

I have an interest in your two sisters.
>>
why don't you invite your 2 sisters to a 3 way video stream to discuss it
we can watch and leave helpful questions in the chat window
>>
>>7963355
First sister: Highlight to her that right now she isn't doing everything in her power to help poor people, therefore, she is a hypocrite. Case closed.

Second sister: Hubris according to whom? Why is it hubris? Argument doesn't make sense. Case still open pending further explanation.

What do you mean "learn in a day"? Of course you won't learn all libraries of R in a single day. You won't even learn all of them in a year. Or do you only mean basic syntax?

If you think dinosaurs can't be cloned your an idiot.
We could activate ancestral genes in the ancestors of dinosaurs, such as chickens.
However, strands of DNA are being found from all sorts of prehistoric animals, such as T-Rex and Velociraptors, dinosaurs will come back in less than a century, /sci/.
