I've read so much about modafinil (Provigil) being some sort of super-drug. That it's a powerful cognitive enhancer that will turn you into a hyper-focused, indefatigable ubermensch. I've read that it's the new adderall and the drug of choice for silicon valley executives. I've even read scaremongering articles which warn about how modafinil will radically change society and create a class division between those on it and everyone else.

I've been on stimulants before (adderall, ritalin) for months at a time, so I'm familiar with how they affect you in terms of energy, motivation, ability to focus, etc.

However, last year I got a few month prescription for modafinil. It literally did nothing. I started out at 100 mg per day, and I felt absolutely no cognitive changes (or even physical side effects for that matter). After about a week at that dosage, I experimented with 150 mg per day and 200 mg per day. Neither of these did anything other than to give me a headache and make me dehydrated.

I continued taking 100 mg per day for another few months, and I experienced absolutely no change in my feelings of tiredness, my ability to focus, or anything else.

So, am I just an anomaly or is modafinil no better than placebo? Apparently it has some benefits for narcoleptics, but are all of these normal healthy people who take it just really gullible? I don't get it.

modafinil sucks compared to adderall , try noopept or selank/semax (ceлaнк/ceмaх)
>>
It's just good for not sleeping. It can make you skip one or a couple of nights in a row depending on your sensitivity to it, and has no crash effect like coffee. That's it. It has no cognitive enhancement effects and it's not supposed to.

Of course if you are on the 2nd day of no sleep, your cognition will be "enhanced" compared to if you stayed awake without taking anything.

its a fucking meme.

i just spent the past 4 days trying it (family member has a prescription)

first day tried 100mg, second 200mg, third and fourth days 250mg

no improved performance in studying/learning, no increased motivation

the only effect was increased heartrate (maybe 4-6bpm increase?)

I know this is verging on not /sci/ material, but I think I'll ask anyway.

My whole life I think I have understood that post-death is a void in the same way pre-birth was a void. My problem is this: if death takes you to the same state as before you were born, then isn't it logical to say death isn't final? Because something took you from pre-birth state to alive state, and death takes you back to dead/pre-birth state. Where am I going wrong?

You are assuming there is an abstract thing called "you" that is continuous.
>>
>>8018448
But functionally isn't it the same thing? As in, if something happened once, why is it reasonable to say it can only happen once?

okay, so I was thinking: what if there was a moon (c) of an other planet and it circled around planet b but also around itself (see image) How would its day and night cycle look like?
18 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
That's a cool idea
assuming its rotation is a bit faster than its revolution it would have a couple short nights and then a long night
>>
>>8018435
The fact that the moon c is orbiting planet b would not change its day/night cycle. Its day night cycle would only be determined by its rotational period (i.e. how quickly it spins on its axis and the tilt of this axis).

However, depending on how the moon's orbital plane around b is oriented, occasionally the moon would fall in b's shadow and it would experience an eclipse.

In the long term (millions or billions of years), the moon's rotational period would eventually slow due to tidal forces and it would become tidally locked to b. I.e. the same side would always face b (much like our moon). So, in other words b's day/night cycle would gradually grow longer and longer until eventually it would equal its orbital period (i.e. one month).

thank you for answering my question ^.^ i'm creating a fictional world with some of friends and i thought it would be cool to experiment with planets, would something like 20 'normal' nights and 1 big night (eclipse) be possible?

I was in chemistry class today and i was holding a Sulfate (i don't remember if it was silver, copper or zinc, but i think it was copper)and accidentally dropped some water on it while it was in my hand, the water got blue and now my hand has black spots, the teacher told me that should be normal in a few days or i could use acetone to help it

Why are people who search for aliens on Mars ridiculed? So long as they are prepared to accept the debunking if there is one then I don't see the problem? It is well known that Mars was very like habitable in the past, been around for billions of years, is a huge planet tens of thousands of kilometers in circumference and we've explored barely any of it. Just a couple of small hills with rovers, that's it There could be an artifact or two sticking out of the dust somewhere and we don't know. Even if they don't find ayys they are still helping the mission by pointing out interesting rock formations and keeping the public who are you know, paying for the mission engaged.

Everytime we learn something about Mars, the less likely life, even microbial, becomes. Something such as an animal running around is almost garunteed to be bullshit, but life in total is not out of the question. The lack of atmosphere would give bombardments of UV rays and mutations out the wazoo (assuming they use DNA), so anything that reproduces would have a problem upholding fertility.
>>
>>8018359
I was talking about evidence of past life. Even existing life is still possible though, underground water away from radiation, those weird methane signatures. I don't see anything in the science book that says past or present ayys on Mars is completely impossible.

I have a question regarding freight train speeds.

Explanation: I live in Australia, directly across a set of train tracks. Occasionally at night a freight train would pass and it got me curious as to how fast it's going.

Question: how fast would a freight train be going if there are ~80-90 containers aboard weighing ~26,000kg each ± 3,000kg; assume they go at a set speed, does not stop, and goes on a fixed straight line?
Feel free to just post the answer but showing your working out helps understanding how you got to your conclusion.
17 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>8017946
There is no way to answer that. You're only giving a mass of the train and saying that it moves at a constant speed. Nothing can be done with that information.
>>
>>8017950
I can confirm this, if it helps; it goes faster than 40km/h but no faster than 100km/h
>>
>>8017951
Cool, man. You only put a restriction on the answer, not added any info in order to find the answer. What you need is a measure of the train's momentum or kinetic energy.
