We might be completely alone in this universe.

>We might be completely alone in this universe.
Even if there are neighbors as close as the moons of Jupiter, the lack of contact makes up effectively alone (presently).
Being completely alone in the universe is incredibly unlikely.
Reality lies somewhere between these two.
Why would we be scared again?

>Boys grow up building shit and playing with electrical shit -> Men go into STEM

So mysterious...
>>
>>8042395
That kind of logic is really stupid. Gender imbalance in a field is an old thing.
By that argument, I can ask more men to become pole dancers, can I? But clearly no one give a shit about that, right?
There are something a woman can do better than a man and vice versa. It's not like both are biologically made the same way.
I thought Bill Nye was better than that. What a retard.

Unless the quote was fake.
>>
>>8042402
No one really wants to see a man pole dancing.. unless maybe he's really, REALLY good at it. And he goes out of his way to be presentable as a pole dancer.

It's the same with women scientists and engineers.

that sucks

I accidentally condensed liquid oxygen in the trap between the line and the pump once.
I slammed the hood shut right before it vaporized.
Got lucky, the trap didn't shatter, the two pieces separated at the joint.
>>
>>8024563
The danger of liquid oxygen is that it is a very good oxidizing agent. If you condense any organic stuff into the trap, it will be oxidized and this can release a lot of heat and ultimately lead to an explosion.
>>
>>8024614
yeah, and?
if you remove the cooling agent (ie the dewar that was used to cool the trap) it goes from liquid to vapor rapidly, expanding in volume

I just started trying to learn Haskell using GHCi as my compiler. How do I enable syntax highlighting?
There are tutorials on the web but they are far too complicated for me who has no programming experience.
208 posts and 30 images submitted.
>>
>>8032038
Your compiler is GHC, GHCi is an interactive environment to load and execute haskell code (primarily used for debugging and to help understand your code).
If you want to have syntax highlighting within ghci, I don't think that's possible.
If you just want haskell syntax highlighting in your text editor, it depends on your text editor how you do that. Most good ones do that by default though
>>
>>8032044
Thanks for the answer.
I am using Notepad++ as a text editor which fortunately does have syntax highlighting.
Apparently, highlighting within ghci is possible, see http://learnyouahaskell.com/starting-out

Do you think it's necessary to get a good grasp of the language?

We know what DNA is, we know how genetics work. Why is eugenics vilified? Why is seeking the optimal outcome bad?

All morals and ethics aside, could humans be selectively bred to create a better quality of human?

>>8036543
>we know how genetics work
no we don't.
Homogenizing the gene pool is the best way to end the human race.
>>
>>8036543
Yes

But we don't have a sufficient understanding of genetics, it's easy to lose scientific basis for classification of desirable traits, artificial selection can lead to selecting for detrimental traits that may not show in one person but could be devastating down the line, we don't know how the environment may change, etc. Basically, we don't know enough.
I'm talking about soft eugenics btw, hard eugenics is for edgelords.
And, for the actual logistics, how to carry out soft eugenics is difficult
>>
>>8036543
Most people think of forced-eugenics where populations determined to be suboptimal can be sterilized and the optimal breeders are treated like cattle and forced to fuck and be fuck for ideal parameters, pretty dystopian.

Then you have genetic engineering of embryos, which is fine, but you have a few outcomes here. Two of concern: you create subhumans for slavery, or you create an organism that surpasses humanity. The first one is more realistic, and more concerning to an extent. The second one is disturbing because you have a small group of people determining what traits have precedence for the picturesque concept of the next step in our evolution.

Finally you have voluntary eugenics where people actively try to optimize their offspring of their own will. This could be a good thing, you have more genetic diversity than the other two which helps our understanding of the human genome in general, enhances evolutionary potential, and is decentralized. And to some extent it's already in practice today, evolution has taught us well in selecting optimal phenotypes, we have to teach ourselves to find the optimal genotypes without sacrificing the decentralized monopoly on mating.

Let's talk about it. Studies have shown that dietary cholesterol does not affect serum cholesterol levels and that the consumption of saturated fat does not increase the incidence of heart disease. Furthermore, low-carb, high-fat diets have been shown to decrease the incidence of diabetes, heart disease and all-cause mortality, whereas high-carb, low-fat diets have been shown to have the opposite effect.

Thus, bacon and eggs are healthier than potatoes and pasta.

1. Post your major and why you originally chose it. Don't be shy or sugarcoat your reasoning. Post the true reason, however silly, malicious, or elitist it was.

2. What do you like and dislike about it? What surprised you? Was it what you thought it was going to be?

3. Are you happy in regards to your choice?

4. If you could go back and choose something else, would you and if so, what would that be and why?

5. Would you consider yourself to be a confident, or depressed and hopeless/lost individual? Do you have goals that you want to reach? Are you an organized, motivated person that wants to get somewhere with their life? How would you personally define yourself in less than a few sentences? Be as honest as you can.

6. Describe your university without giving away its identity. Describe the students or your peers in your major. Give us an idea of its ranking (inter)nationally in your major and overall.

Thank you

1. Computer Science / Mathematics double major

2.
CS: Like: Algorithmy courses, graph theory courses, general problem solving. Dislike: Courses that had a high fact:problem solving ratio. (ie computer architecture, etc)

Math: Like: Graph theory courses, Algebra courses. General open-ended problem solving. Dislike: Differential equations courses (or at least how they're taught, basically most of the class was engineers) and other related courses in 1st year and kinda 2nd year where problems were overly formulaic and you could just look up a method on paulsnotes or something on how to solve a certain type of question.

3. Yes

4. I don't think so. I might swap out a few courses but I would keep the majors.

5. I have goals, but my motivation changes a lot. Sometimes I'm super motivated, sometimes I am not at all.

6. Somewhere 100-200 internationally
Peers:
CS: Relatively normal people. In 1st year there were a bunch of people that seem to be /sci/'s stereotype of a CS major, but they all seem to have dropped out. There's not many girls though.

Math: Relatively normal, inquisitive people. There's a significant minority of super-autists though that are insufferable. I mean legitimate autism, not 4chan autism. There's some in CS too, but the ones in math seem to be on another level. A lot more girls than I thought there would be.

1. electrical engineering. Chosen because mostly I really liked math, and it was my best subject. the curriculum material all sounded really interesting to me and I always had an interest in how electronics worked. The job market thing swayed me a lot too.

2. Dislike: the mountain of work that comes every semester and all the time I spend playing catchup. It's killer.

Biggest surprise: Probly the fact that getting a job with an engineering degree isn't automatic like every one says, and you have to suck dick all throughout undergrad for internships, and getting your foot in the door. Also I thought digital logic was gonna be fun but boy was a wrong. Most dry boring material ever and it was hard as fuck.

Like: I find the material to be really fun. It also helps me understand what's going on when I work on my electronics hobby shit. Truly enjoyable work.

3. Not at the moment but I'm told it gets better.

4. Would drop college completely and learn the electricians trade. College is expensive as hell, and the Job outlook sucks. The competitiveness of it is very disheartening, and I'm really not college material. I feel like one of the few people that has not enjoyed their college experience in any way.

5. Certainly depressed. Not very motivated at all, suffer from a tad bit of social anxiety. Still not 100% on what I want to do with this degree. Have plenty of goals but far too unmotivated and depressed to work towards them. I think about my goals, get fired up for about 2 minutes, then I just want to sleep and lay down again.

6. Probably not ranked very high at all even at the national level. Handful of genuinely awful professors. I mean so bad that you could ask them to do an example of a problem and they would literally be incapable of doing it. Our EE department is ~12 years old. I truly hate this place and how mediocre it is. Going here kind of put a sour taste in my mouth about college I think. I wish I tried harder in community college.
>>
>>8039525
I know your feel. Was in Electrical Engineering and hated the amount of work. Now I'm in software eng and it's 10x less work. Getting a job is easier as well.

It's totally legit. I am a fan of Colinfurze, he does a lot of propulsion based stuff like this. Modern two-stroke engines weighing 20 kg can put out over 50 horsepower so a pair can easily lift a person off of the ground. Despite what everyone thinks the reason why personal flying machines don't exist isn't because our engines aren't good enough but rather for reasons of control. As you can see he simply hasn't bothered with control, I presume he just tuned the throttles to match and hoped they stayed that way for the whole flight. No control surfaces either, just shift around weight. So in short it's not as spectacular as it looks, anyone can do this with a big enough prop and fancy Japanese two-stroke engines, it's the control that's the problem. Colinfurze is a joker, check out his homemade turbojet videos. What I really like about this dude is that despite being a plumber with zero engineering training everything he builds werks. Note that there was an official company trying to create a marketable hoverbike of similar design and that didn't even get off of the ground.
>>
There's no reason it couldn't be real.

As >>8036732 points out, it doesn't rise out of ground effect. It's closer to an inefficient hovercraft than a helicopter.

He also only ever flies it briefly, and never really has it under control.

It's possible for it to be fake, but it's also entirely possible for it to be real.

15 years later and I still don't know what to believe. A fucking plane and a little fire took down the world trade center? and it collapsed in like 10 seconds or something like that!

but at the same time... there is no way something like this could be covered up.
>>
>>8035255
Yes. Long story short, get metal hot enough and it becomes putty. Mix that with the force of a plane impacting a building and there's more then enough energy to take a building down.
