(1/2)I apologize beforehand if this is the wrong board to post this or if at any time it does not make sense

>In Gullivers travels johnathan swift describes a circular flying island 7837 yards in diameter with an adamantine base that's 200 yards high and for the next 100 yards its described as normal soil. in the middle of the island is a chasm 50 yards in diameter, and descending into the chasm you arrive into an observatory that's 100 yards beneath the upper surface off the adamantine their is the most important aspect of the island the lodestone

>a loadstone of a prodigious size, in shape resembling a weaver’s shuttle. It is in length six yards, and in the thickest part at least three yards over. This magnet is sustained by a very strong axle of adamant passing through its middle, upon which it plays, and is poised so exactly that the weakest hand can turn it. It is hooped round with a hollow cylinder of adamant, four feet yards in diameter, placed horizontally, and supported by eight adamantine feet, each six yards high. In the middle of the concave side, there is a groove twelve inches deep, in which the extremities of the axle are lodged, and turned round as there is occasion.

>By means of this loadstone, the island is made to rise and fall, and move from one place to another. For, with respect to that part of the earth over which the monarch presides, the stone is endued at one of its sides with an attractive power, and at the other with a repulsive. Upon placing the magnet erect, with its attracting end towards the earth, the island descends; but when the repelling extremity points downwards, the island mounts directly upwards. When the position of the stone is oblique, the motion of the island is so too: for in this magnet, the forces always act in lines parallel to its direction.
>note the island can only float when its in the boundaries of the kingdom due to the mineral composition of the ground below and the height limit of the city is 4

(2/2)>miles any higher the magnetic field of the land doesn't reach it.
So what I'm trying to do is figure out how this could work in the real world
Doing some research I assumed the adamantine base was refined magnetite which is both extremely hard and is ferromagnetic and that's how adamantine materials were described in Swifts time. So the weight of the island is at least 42,087,253,268 tons.
I'm not sure how to calculate the magnetic pressure needed to lift the island. or even whether a ferromagnetic or diamagnetic process would be better for this particular situation. also how would rotating the lodestone possibly change the field direction of the metal base?

is it possible shrink it such that its new volume and new surface area are exactly half the original?

you should be able to solve this

Mods this is about math, not philosophy, don't delete please.

So I've been reading a bit of this guy and in one of his examinations of language he gives the example of a pupil given the series 0, n, 2n, 3n, etc. and an order to "add +1" up to 1000. Then the pupil is given the order "add +2", but instead of going on with 1000, 1002, 1004, and so on he misunderstands and adds it up as 1000, 1004, 1008, 1012, etc.

The guy was a genius, a mathematician, so surely it wasn't some random example of misunderstanding. I just can't wrap my head around this example, I simply can't make sense in what possible way could that misunderstood in THAT particular war.

Take for example Ramanujan's series: 1+2+3...=-1/12

Makes no fucking sense, but when you do some other form of action or subtraction (can't remember exactly, and tbqh I didn't understand it fully either when heard the explanation), so I'm assuming there's some sense behind the outcome of understanding the "add +2" in Wittgenstein's series as "1000, 1004, 1008..." instead of what we would understand. Any ideas or am I just missing something? Or was it really just a made up example?

You are probably missing something, but there is no way for us to tell without the quote in context. Wittgenstein's discussion of math in the Tractatus and thr Investigations is, so far as I can tell, pretty general; that is, his points don't hinge on the accuracy of the mathematicsl propositions they explain. Accordingly, it seems possible that he made a mathematical error, just so long as the correctness of the mathematical proposition was not central to the philosophical statement he was making.
Then again, he is Wittgenstein; you're probably the one in error. Give us the context and maybe we can help you out.

So why exactly is this whole AI business not going to fuck everyone up the pooper exept a select few (no you are not one of them)? Surveillance and fighting robots are already a thing, and sigularity-steroids aren't going to make them less of a threat to everyone (again, exept the few people at the top).

Ok /sci/ I need your help. I used to be an intelligent person with a very good memory. Since December I decided to smoke some weed every once in a while. Long story short I became a stoner using marijuana heavily over the past 4 months. The thing is I can feel myself becoming an idiot. My memory has become shit and I have no motivation to do anything. I feel like this is what a normal person feels like. Anyways I'm looking for a way to get me back to my old self. I want to get my motivation back and my memory. I've already stopped smokeing. Also motivational qoutes or lectures don't really work. I'm about to try TDCS and nootropics in an attempt to reach my goal. Any other suggestions?

>>8045533
There is your problem. Motivatonal quotes are shit that the normalfags use to feel better, but that never work making a person the best. Ask any really successful person and you'll see they never trust in that crap. They start working to be better and look at them.
Just start working and stop being a piece of shit (I have the same problem, just that I don't have and excuse like "I smoked weed xDdXd")
>>
Just quit nail biting after roughly 10 years, naturally its much more compulsive, but if I had to advice anything I'd say: know your habits. This is what really made a difference among motivational quotes, self-development crap et cetera.
>>
>>8045545
Yeah that's why I said they don't work. I didn't want any anons trying to give a motivational paragraph and shit. Anyways the problem arises when I try to study and get shit done. Firstly I don't feel any drive to do it but I power through that and do it. But when I'm studying my memory retention is shit and it frustrates me. This leads me to want to not study and stay in my bed with nothing but self pity and frustration.

It's not wrong, it's inaccurate in a way that is irrelevant for the set of problems it's used in, Newtonian mechanics is still used in many papers.

Dark matter is sort of the opposite of light, name aside. It has mass, and cannot be observed aside from the side effects of its mass and gravity. It comprises roughly a quarter of all mass in the universe, 27%. That's a little more than all helium in the universe at about 23%

We know that nuclear reactions turn matter into light waves. Light has no mass, so where the hell do those particles with mass go? If dark matter and light are true opposites of each other...

electromagnetic waves - light without mass
dark matter - mass without light

... then I predict dark matter is created at the same time light is created in nuclear reactions. That could explain why the amount of dark matter is about the same as all non-hydrogen matter in the universe. What do you nerds think?

If you are obssessed with hoverbikes so much, why don't you make one? Shit just make one in simulation if you're fucking poor. If boeing can design an entire airplane in simulation, you should be able to make a hover bike in sim too.

Now go pirate /x/plane. Stop white-knighting for hoverbikes, we're just going to troll you

Because the DoD funds damn near any engineering project so long as someone on the route to funding has a passing interest/belief the thing will work or if the project involves enough Congressional districts and very little to do with how realistic the project is.

i am leaving mechanical engineering (i'm at second year now), i am choosing between the 2 in the subject.
i would anyway lose and year, but with e.e. i would have less exams to do in the second year because i can keep some from m.e., while at physics i would have to do second year+ 1 or 2 from the first that werent in the m.e. course
what would you do?
