I mean, why is /sci/ so dismissive of everything that isn't some useless physics equation?

The "Field Purity" comic and the Jacob Barnett memes have done more damage to this board than any other meme on any other board

That pic is mostly bullshit.

Yes, the field purity comic has damaged /sci/, but a lot of the memes concerning non-math/physics fields are mostly banter... And the few kids that take them seriously and spam them in threads are extremely easy to dismiss. I'm pretty sure even the serious math or physics majors cringe at those memes when used in seriousness.

If you're insecure enough to even consider it then yes in your case they are.

Once you've been published and praised by world renowned researchers you tend not to care what some idiot on the internet says. Especially not some butthurt idiot who got made fun of for having retarded ideas and not understanding math. /sci/ is one of the best boards on the internet precisely because people here don't need the pretentious niceties to feed their egos from other math impaired fanboys playing pretend scientist.

I'd post my research gate profile to back me up, but the type of faggot that usually critiques /sci/ isn't even in STEM academia anyway so wouldn't understand the significance of my H-factor.

How does /sci/ deal with the fact that whenever they learn something cool and interesting, that they'll end up forgetting about it in a month, and won't even be able to talk about it with people?

Ive created flash cards in anki, with information ive read about, just so I wont forget it. But. Soon, Ill have thousands of flashcards I would have to go through, just to recite information.

What should I do?

>How does /sci/ deal with the fact that whenever they learn something cool and interesting, that they'll end up forgetting about it in a month, and won't even be able to talk about it with people?

Depends. With literature I have nearly total recall because of how much I have read. I can remember everything fairly easily because of all the associations and the fact that it's an ongoing study.

With math it's a little different because you have to specialize and then focus on an area of study.

But who are you going to be talking to about math apart from your classmates before a test? I have a pop-sci friend that likes to go on about paradoxes all the time; I'm sure he thinks they're 'cool and interesting', but there's a lot better conversation to be had than talking about science with people. It's a mostly solitary pursuit best kept between you, your lecturers and classmates.

It sounds like you're talking about reading something on wikipedia and then forgetting about it. Don't be a casual hobbyist man, you'll build up a lot of references just from ongoing study.

I don't forget about it. I remember it perfectly. I just don't feel any need to prove myself to you any longer.

State what's of your interest. AI is a really wide term.

In general for a layman I would advise to firstly learn programming, then some basics of algorithms, data structures and from now on pursue into AI.

If you can't program in anything, go for Python. If you know shit about algorithms/data structures, you will overall be capable of doing simple stuff.

The first two can be tackled at the same time. The last, if you don't know it already you're probably fucked because it means you missed the entire point of the course. In particular, you've failed to grasp the utility of the stokes and divergence theorems--along with their physical intuition.

This question pertains to reincarnation

How does identity work in terms of reincarnation? Identity and consciousness is a very tricky thing to discuss because under all of the thoughts and memories, who am 'I' really? and who's to say that he who is 'I' will not experience consciousness again within the length of eternity?

Am I being silly here? I've just been thinking about the possibility of being reincarnated in different scenarios in which the universe would permit civilization to occur over and over again in a reality where time has no limit.

I'm not even smoking. I'm just having a bit of a struggle with the idea of identity and consciousness. and what comes after death. I'm really kind of just letting my thoughts drift with the idea of time and reality.

Humans are getting fatter and fatter.
As soon as they have the economic ability to eat all they want, they will almost always choose to do so.
Is there any stopping it or is humanity destined to be a gluttonous blob?
11 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Excuse me, but gym and self-esteem also comes with money.

(Well, sometimes...)
>>
I'm in biotech and I like to think that maybe a century from now we'll be regularly editing to improve the human genome.

As long as you're not editing to improve metabolic efficiency, and adding genes so that say, a person packs on more muscle, humans would be able to eat more without getting fat.

I suppose you could also edit to purposefully decrease metabolic efficiency as well, so you'd eat more to maintain the same body you got right now.

Of course the chief ethical issue with this, assuming we can wield the tool reliably, is that it makes everyone on Earth need more food. But I suppose if we can assume this doesn't change food intake, then all you're doing is turning that fat into something else that is useful for the person, like more muscle, a stronger immune system, more DNA repair to prevent aging, etc.

Obesity is primarily a social issue though. In America it's the poor who are fat, not the rich.
>>
>>8075215
>humans would be able to eat more without getting fat.
This would be fucking horrible.
Imagine all of the wasted resources coming from creating all that food. The only thing stopping humans from eating 24/7 is fear of their health and the fact that they die early if they eat too much.
If suddenly everyone was able to eat as much as they wanted the amount of resources needed to do this would completely wreck our planet.

I hope we never find a "cure" for fatness or else fat fucks will ruin everything. The fact that they die is the best thing about them.

How many generations does it take for unique genes from an ancestor like Genghis Khan, to be overwritten or diluted to the point of non-existence?

Is something like that possible, or will there always be a little bit of Genghis Khan in the human race?

Is it even worth colonizing other planets?
Seems to me like it would be way cheaper to build colonies on asteroids and small moons, to avoid dealing with gravity wells and atmosphere of planets
28 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>build colonies on asteroids
Asteroids are really fucking small.
They have almost nothing on them.
And they spin way to fast to be useful.
>build colonies on small moons
This idea receives serious consideration.
There are several gas giant moons people can make a case for.

Another common suggestion is comets.

Is undergraduate research worth doing?

Nothing separates 'undergraduate research' from 'graduate research' except a few years of reading textbooks, so yes.
>>
>>8074961
Have you done any research? I just wanna know what it's like. I think one of my teachers is trying to make me his golden tendie boy, so I'm trying to figure out what I'd be getting myself into.
>>
>>8074966
Not the same anon, but research is completely different depending on what field you go into. I'm an undergrad doing molecular dynamics. Doing something computational is great because in some cases you can work from home if you need. When I spend a month not getting anywhere with a simulation, though, I feel like an unproductive piece of shit.

Would it be possible to automate the job of a mathematician by using some sort of logical constraint satisfaction technique, whereby axioms are combined together in all possible combinations to form proofs, and then proofs can be combined together to get more proofs? Could we just hook this technique up to some super computers and map out all of mathematics in finite time?
