A few nights ago I saw stars in the sky except one was blasting across the sky at exceptionally high speeds. It was around the same brightness as the other stars and had no tail or anything. Now I look at the sky all the time and airplanes always have red or green flashing lights on and they don't appear to move that fast against the stars especially if they're so high they're just a dot. Was it aliens?

Hey I'm just asking for an explanation as to what I saw. No need to be a dick.

We don't fucking know, nigga. Probably just your autism playing tricks on you.
What's the fastest and most efficient way to learn the unit circle? Failed Trig because I didnt bother to memorize it all. Figured if I sat down and did whatever the best method was, I could get it like I did with my times tables.
1) Memorize the graphs. Sin(x) is an odd function which crosses the origin. Cos(x) is an even function, et cetera. Also, sin(n*x) and cos(n*x) are both periodic with a period of 2pi/n.
2) Okay, let's talk about the angles of 30, 45, 60, and 90 degrees.
sin 30 = 1/2 (the square root of 1 divided by 2)
sin 45 = sqrt 2 / 2 (notice: the square root of 2 > the square root of 1)
sin 60 = sqrt 3 / 2 (notice: the square root of 3 > the square root of 2)
sin 90 = 1 = sqrt 4 /2 (notice: the square root of 4 > the square root of 3)
Do you see what's going on here? The sin function is increasing from 0 to 90 degrees, so we know to go from 1/2 to sqrt2/2 to sqrt3/3, etc. Then it decreases from 90 to 180 degrees. (You also need to know your quadrants to tell if it's positive or negative)
Cos(x) is basically the same thing, but it's DECREASING from 0 to 90 degrees, and then it becomes negative. In other words, cos(x) = sin (x+90 degrees)
cos (30 degrees) = sqrt 3/2
cos (45 degrees) = sqrt 2/2
Blah blah blah. It should seem pretty simple now, just practice.
>>8083938
**correction: sin(x) actually decreases from 90 degrees to 270 degrees, and cos(x) is decreasing from 0 degrees to 180 degrees.
>>8083938
Ok thanks.
Got any youtube video suggestions to supplement this advice
Is this book worth picking up? I'm currently almost done with calc 2 and am interested in learning more about proofs. I haven't really done many at all before, but I have heard this book is a good introduction to them.
>>8083912
I thought it was pretty good as an intro to proofs, don't stick to the ideas as if they're gospel, but it helped me learn proofs.
>>8083912
It's excellent. Pick up Rudin's introductory text to accompany it so you can practice with real mathematics.
>>8083912
It exposes a lot of proofs by way of number theory. I found it boring and a bit dry. I didn't care to continually prove useless number theoretic results early on and lost interest. Also the proofs are just tedious and boring. I'd recommend discrete mathematics by epp or Rosen. It has a wide range of subjects and teaches proofs that'll help in higher level courses.
Cognitive science general thread
ITT we discuss
>comparison of different IQ tests
>studies confirming the validity of IQ
>methods of increasing IQ
>racial IQ differences
>cognitive inferiority of the female gender
>possible cures for brainlets
>the future rise of average IQ after the singularity
Cognitive science really has taken a turn for the worse
south korea, japan, and germany have the highest nat avg iqs of any countries
and they HAPPEN TO ALSO be the best 3 countries in the world at engineering...
china and se asia lag 5-10 points behind s kor and japan, which is why their engineering is not as good if not shit..
iq means alot, but physics ability is a better judge of g (general intelligence)
What are some reliable IQ tests and their cost?
This showed up on /pol/ a few minutes ago but was quickly deleted. Anybody know how?

It has been answered on /pol/ already.

Yes, it was. You were just too dumb to understand the hint.
I've just realised that, my childhood, up until I was like 20, was wasted by distractions and video games and I basically wasted my own fucking time - then I look at literally anyone who's achieved anything ever, none of them started late, they had always been interested in their field and excelled at it.
Is there even any point? I want to be good at Computer Science but how can I bring something to the table when there's all these people who have been programming since 10, can I even compete?
I grew up in a shit neighbourhood and video games were just a way to escape my shit life, now that I'm at Uni studying Cs, I am getting lapped by these guys who are just so quick, so practised and efficient - people who have refined their skills over years. Is there even any point /sci/ ? I don't even feel like I belong here, and my Uni isn't even that good on the global level (St Andrews, Scotland)... but it's a facade isn't it really, nobody is going to be the next Bill Gates without their whole upbringing having put them in a favourable position so by the time they were whatever age they had the skills necessary to really succeed in their field
What I'm saying is, is why not just give up? I'll never be the best, I will never even get close
>>8083648
m8 most people with half a brain feel like that at some point
I say that as someone who's been programming since I was 12.
go whine somewhere else faggot

How old are you now? You must be very old....
You're lazy. Unless you're going to die tomorrow, next week, month or year nothing is stopping you from becoming what you want. Just do it.
So i just heard the oldest woman has died today at the age of 116 with another leading behind her now.
I always hear women being the ones to live for exceptionally long time. And as a guy, I kind of don't want to die at the age of 70 or so. My last few grandparents have went this way already. This was probably due to their diet growing up since it was mostly death by strokes. Yes, I'm black. I did sort of ate what they ate in my younger childhood, but I always tended to eat healthier cause well, school taught me that the five food groups, avoid saturated fats, and eats lots of fruits and vegetables, something my family didn't do much. Currently, I live a pretty good life. I work out at the gym while I spend the remainder of my days working at the computer or walking about. However, as I approach 30, I start to worry if any of my family problems will catch up to me, despite me living pretty healthy. Will I start having heart problems? Will I get hit by something that'll make it so I never can make it to that 100? Or maybe I do have a chance to at least get there by changing my lifestyle to something more conservative?
What do you guys think? Is women living longer a product of their body compositions or living qualities?
>>8083565
Longevity is a bit more complicated (and obviously an unsolved problem) than just "staying healthy". For example intense calorie restriction can help with longevity, but it's definitely not healthy in the short term.
Your grandparents dying at ~70 is pretty good conisidering that generation had the most retarded lifestyle.
You will probably live well past 70 if you keep up the exercise and dieting, what you really need to worry about is if you'll still have your mind and health by then. Being old fucking sucks.
>>8083594
When I'm idling, I sometimes do wonder if my mental health would still be the same at that age. My one fear is my consciousness fading away, which is also why I fear death. And being old puts you on the border of that. Which also makes if that research for preserving brain health will come around in the next twenty years. I don't want to lose all I know or who I am.
>>8083599
I have the same fears. What's fucked up is that we don't really understand it all.
I have a professor who's getting close to 90, he still smokes a pack of cigarrettes per day. In the 4 years I've known him the man was sharper than anyone else in the faculty, not only his work, but his wit in general conversation.
This year something suddenly changed inside him. He doesn't have any health issues, but talking to him you can clearly tell that his mind is starting to fade.
I'm scared guys ;_;
Is there any function that can check if a nummber is even or not. By that i mean an algebraic function not a computer functions, that means for example modulus can't be used.

Is there a index that would indicate how much country take immigrants in a year without suffering social welfare damage?
first you need a model for the impact of immigrants on social welfare
to do that you first need to model the social welfare function
good luck with that
Im not looking specificly on social welfare, is there any index that would just indicate "This country can take this x of migrants in a year, because they can"
come on guys I need bring BA tomorrow, I need to know how to determine what number migrants can take.
If an object 90% the mass of Earth that is going to hit us in 30 years was discovered right now, would we be able to stop it?
>>8083351
No.
That's why we should stop being chained to this fucking rock.
>>8083351
No.
We would probably fall into chaos and witness an extinction level event unlike anything other.
Hello /sci/ I need help with the problem in the picture. I need to show that this equality is true with the given value Gamma(1/2)=sqrt(pi).
Now where do I even begin with this? I've only found a post at
http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/1154366/gamma-function-proof-of-gamma-%CE%931-2-sqrt-pi
but it doesn't really help me. Any hints here please? Thanks.
>>8083291
With your given value, n is 0. Just plug in and remember 0! is defined as 1.
Does the recursion formula not work for non-integers?
Induction.
