Drinking alcohol, even in moderate amounts, LITERALLY shrinks your brain.

Why do you still drink, /sci/?

Their job is to come in to work 30 hours a week, hang out in their office with their dogs, maybe read a manuscript or two, then write their name in as a prominent author on every article their underlings write for publication.

Probably similar to the stuff we find around underwater volcanic vents, but with small differences in the DNA/RNA/TNA(?) structure and what not.

I don't think chemistry allows for weird stuff like Silicon-based lifeforms very readily, even if they are cool.

hey /sci/ lets talk about math jobs for those of us who have tread down the applied math path.

we'll take economics, statistics, physics, and comp sci in our conversation too.

what's popular these days? what are you currently doing? what do you want to do?

post your
age/degree/school/job

Considering the fact that some days ago my fucking old as fuck dad sent me an email with a blogpost about Data Science, it looks like Data Science is the meme of the month. I suppose.

It is unrelated, but data science looks like fucking shit.

>what are you currently doing?

Software Development. It is comfier than I thought it would be because of the scope of the projects I work 100% alone and I only have to report to clients, but clients cannot talk directly to me so I live in a cloud where I just have to casually think about work.

Use mostly Java and VB.Net so I'm not exactly living the C++ dream but with Java I can pretend.

I basically construct simple algorithms that just have a lot of moving parts and don't have inherent complexity in them, but still these are fun problems to think about and like the pretend mathematician I am, I love it. Then I have to design UIs because text interfaces are not acceptable in 2016 but that is fine too because it is quick and not too boring.

All that I do is related in some way or another to finance.

>what do you want to do?

'Graduate' from finance to science/math but honestly I don't care that much. Maybe I will one day do a MS in something related and then live the dream.

>although trying to get into software engineering, i feel thats where the fun is.

It is okay. I enjoy a lot but I feel like if I told you it is amazing I would be lying to you. It is just 'ok'.

Oh, and I want to add this and I hope others will agree.

There is a metric on payscale that says the percentage of people from every career who believe that they are making the world a better place with their careers.

Please answer that too, if you think you are doing good.

I'd say yes. Because of me, entrepreneurs looking to get loans to fund their cancer research company can calculate the cost of their payment more comfortably and faster.

Hello /sci/,
Many people have been running around saying that milk is bad/harmful to ones body.

Is this true? i drink alot of milk and is more healthy than those around me and have bones strong as iron (my pure swedish friend as well).
Im half swedish if maybe the race and historical feeding might be a reason for todays studies results.

Cow's milk is for calves.
Human milk is for human children under 6yo.

Also, at least in the USA, most of the milk in stores isn't milk anymore. it is just a milk product with stuff removed and stuff added in order to make more money.

How would Humans be able to live on Mars? How will we be able to build cities and settlements suitable for Humans? Also what are the long term affects of Humans living on Mars after multiple generations?

Oh c'mon! Is no one on this board?
>>

Nobody really knows because it hasn't been tried yet. But here are some things we can assume:

1. Mars will need many more GPS and communications satellites just to cover planning and communications
2. many more probes (specifically ones that can do a broad variety of geological and hydrological studies) will be needed to get more data on Martian geology and hydrology
3. for manned missions, it's extremely likely that backup supplies and rockets would be sent so that there is only a minimal chance of starvation or dehydration
4. a fuel depot will likely have to be built, if only to get interplanetary travel costs down
5. early cities/settlements will likely be built beneath ground (likely with typical mining explosives)
6. later on, the high amount of iron on Mars can be used to make steel locally. Assuming fuel can also be made, this means that almost everything on a rocket can be made locally (except for rubber gaskets)
7. ultimately, Mars's development will be determined by the amount of accessible water available
8. as for terraforming, nobody really knows much about this either except that Co2 and Methane can cause a greenhouse effect. The biggest problem on Mars is it's low pressure atmosphere, which prevents surface water from existing or people being able to walk around without pressurized suits.

Theoretically, say you have a mathematically perfect sphere. I know its impossible, so shut the fuck up. If you placed it on an impossibly perfect surface that is perfectly level, would the area of the sphere touching the flat base be infinitely small? Would the theoretical sphere be dented and made imperfect just by contact with the flat surface, regardless of weight, resilience or density?
