I get really pissed off when I hear that most Ph.D's in math and physics who remain in academia are getting payed shitty amounts of money, like less than a plumber. And they have to constantly save their asses by applying for grants. And they are under lots of pressure to publish more papers so that they can qualify for these grants.

I want to know right now, WHY DON'T THESE GUYS GET PAYED A SHIT TON MORE MONEY?!??!

Scientists a worth a hell lot more than a banker, a football player, a CEO, and even doctors. Without scientists, none of the technology that we all depend upon would exist. These guys are not only the source of all technological innovation, but also the only people who have real insight into how the world works? These guys are the smartest, and yet much dumber people are getting payed a lot more money then them.

What the hell is wrong with society that they can't pay their most important members enough money for them to sustain themselves???

Yeah. wtf.
>>
>>8103223
How little they are paid should make it clear that they are really not that important at all.

This is exactly the issue, most postdocs are working on some weird extremely specific research project that has a few applications in its field and will have no meaningful impact on anyone's lives outside of academia. The vast majority of academic research is like this, and most of the research with actual real-world applications involves some level of equipment and is done by experienced professors or researchers getting substantial compensation. The postdocs and recent PhDs getting paid shit are typically not working on this kind of stuff, they're working on their interests at universities.

And you seem to be very confused about the source of technological innovation. Most new technology is developed by engineers and researchers working in R&D at tech companies or industrial corporations. Postdocs aren't usually developing new technology, they're writing papers about discoveries that only very rarely have applications in actual technological innovations. And once again, engineers and researchers at tech companies get paid plenty of money.

Yep. I've been depressed for about a decade, I started exercising and going to the gym about a year ago and I honestly can't remember feeling better. Since then I've been wondering if there's some link between the increasingly sedentary lifestyles of people and the raise in the prevalence of depression.

The Erdős–Straus conjecture states that for all [math]n > 2[/math], there exists [math]x, y, z \in \mathbb{N}[/math] such that [math]\frac{4}{n} = \frac{1}{x} + \frac{1}{y} + \frac{1}{z}[/math].

Anyone here know about head injuries?
I seem to have some sort of internal head injury, acquired five months ago from whiplash. It's on the right side of the back of my brain and hurts whenever my neck muscles are flexed. Typing this right now is causing it to hurt. I am unable to go to a doctor because of other circumstances.
I just don't know what to do. First of all, I can't sleep for more than, usually, 6 hours in a row because of my noisy family. And I'm having trouble napping because this head injury is making my hallucinate. I'm gonna start eating better today. I got a multivitamin a week ago and have been taking fish oil from the start, but it seems like if five months' time can't heal it, nothing will.
I feel relief when I walk around with a clear mind, but it's hard to do this for more than 10 minutes because I don't really have a peaceful place to walk around in + I have other health problems that interfere with my ability to walk.
Please help.

move to a first world country and get a doctor
>>
Do you have a fever? You might have meningitis. I got bird flu and then got it this year, thought I was going insane.

Just try to excersize, eat right, and get some anti-biotics. The hallucinations will stop once the fever starts going down.
>>
You can get fish anti-biotics from the pet store btw, it's the same shit. Just google the dosage. Take them for 2 months.

So lets say you build a flying colony on venus 55 km above the surface and you fall off, how do you die? Assume you are wearing a special acid resistant space suit and have been breathing heliox. Does the wind force kill you before the pressure kills you? Or do you survive the pressure long enough for the heat to cook you?

And just for fun, if you are wearing a magic 150 kg pressure suit, could you survive impact?

>solid panels on venus
What would be the point of that lol

A rigid is probably the way to go, not this suspended balloon.
>>
>>8107178
Solar intensity is more than twice that of Earth, plus the clouds are so shiny that you can put solar panels facing down too.

This thread is not about colonizing venus, it's about dying on venus.
>>
you would fall quite a bit slower than on Earth, and the space suit would protect you from heat, but the landing would be too powerful to survive.

Can we please discuss why the Soviets (at the time) have pictures of the surface of Venus but NASA is jacking off to the same old pictures the Curiosity sends?

Because the soviets made an effort to land probes on venus after accidentally doing it once, while NASA made an effort to land literally everywhere else

the most reasonable answer would be costs: the Venera landers only survived a very brief time on the surface to send back a few pictures. The hazardous pressure down there is probably going to brake today's equipment as well. So the costs do not justify the means. Also, Mars is much more interesting from a long-term perspective. What are we going to do with Venus? Attempt to land Mark Whatey there?

But I agree that this one pic we have from Venus is making me quite emotional. In my view, having been to Venus and having actual surface footage tops anything on Mars today. But perhaps that's just my feelings for Venus.

So we all know the high school textbook explanation of lift is incorrect. It explains that air molecules traveling over a cambered airfoil must travel faster over the top, a larger distance, in order to "meet up" with the molecules traveling along the bottom. This is wrong, as there is no physical principle or rule that necessitates that the molecules must "meet up." Amazing how often this myth is still perpetuated.

Anyway, I know that lift is predominately the result of angle of attack, in accordance with Newton's 3rd law. This is the reason why most aircraft are designed with an angle of incidence (a slight upward angle on the wing relative to the aircraft's longitudinal axis), so that they can fly level while producing enough lift.

However, I also know that a cambered airfoil, such as the one pictured, also produces a slight amount of lift at zero angle of attack as a result of its shape, via Bernouli's principle. My question is why? What causes the air to move faster over the top than bottom at zero AoA, thereby inducing lower pressure on the top than bottom? I haven't really found a straightforward explanation for this online. All resources simply state that air moves faster over the top but not why this particular shape creates this condition. This is what I'm interested in. Anyone have a concise explanation?

Number conservation. If the rate in > rate out the fluid bunches up.
>>
>>8104654
To my knowledge, this is exactly what happens and results in a wake of turbulence and vortices. Can't remember where I saw it, but there was a nice .gif showing the molecules of air flowing along an airfoil and demonstrating that the air on top does indeed reach the trailing edge before the air on the bottom.

>if you combine the two-element set {1,2} with the two-element set {2,3} you get the three-element set {1,2,3}
Set theory is categorically retarded.
>>
>>8106186
You can see it anohter way, instead of elements look at what the sets they contain.

Any set contains the empty set and itself.

Therefore, the empty set contains the empty set and the empty set. So it only has one part, the empty set.

Now the set {empty set} will contain the empty set, and the set that contains the empty set.

Basically, the parts of {empty set} are empty set and {empty set}, those are two parts.

And that makes sense when you think about it.

So a man with a container that only contains another empty container is better off than the man who only has an empty container.

Please, please tell me no one on /sci/ actually fell for the "0.999999... = 1" meme.
341 posts and 12 images submitted.
>>
>>8109416
Well, prove that it isn't.

Show that if you assume 0.9999... = 1 then that leads to a contradiction somewhere.

pro tip: Make sure your argument does not have contradictions itself.
>>
>>8109440
>hurr you have to prove a negative so that I dont have to prove a positive durrrr
Fuck you. You support the claim, burden of proof is on you.
>>
>>8109446
>burden of proof is on you.

It used to be. Then people came up with a billion proofs for the proposition.

Now that we have a proof that works, the burden of proof is on you as you are now trying to dismiss a well established claim.

Faggot.

Go ahead, this should be easy. Just type up one single number that is between 0.999... and 1.

If there is even one then that would immediately imply that 0.999... is not 1 so go on.

Type it up faggot.
