How smart is he really?

I heard he got rich making an html phone book in notepad.exe and now everyone think's he's a genius.

Smart enough to get rich and be a household name :^)

But, if you'd like, you can foster delusional feelings of superiority out of insecurity :^)
>>
He has what psychologists refer to as "narrow intelligence"; meaning he's basically a high functioning autist.
Easiest way to detect an autist:
1.) Do they comprehend normal social rules
2.) Are there understandings and interests exceptionally narrow
3.) Do they have OCD behaviors
4.) Can they comprehend being incorrect

So he's basically an autist.
So was Howard Hughes [also had multiple other disorders], Bill Gates [also antisocial personality disorder], etc.

It's not uncommon for high functioning autists to corner a market normal people haven't thought to go in.

Question /sci/
How easy would it be for one man to farm an island by himself if he had a small army of machines and systems with AI good enough to do a lot of tasks such as sowing seeds, watering crops, taking care of livestock etc? As it is now, its very difficult for a person to do all this for self sustaining purposes and even more difficult if they are old, but with the help of robots maybe it can be done?

How the hell did they get voice activated commands working in 1939??

if you have prerecorded commands based on his voice and dialect. then it is only a threshold similarity between the word he says and the word he can hear.

or else its fake and its all scripted. most of it is scripted anyways probably
>>
>1939
>just invented electricity
>voiced by phil harris (baloo, jungle book)
>just happens to be tall with thick legs and a very wide torso

mfw brainlets actually think this was a real robot and not just some cuck in a suit
>>
>>8130381
His voice was done by a record player evidently.

Watching the video, it appears that after the command is entered, the rest of the action is scripted, but the command looks legit. I don't think the operator would talk so mechanically if it wasn't. Then again, there's no proof that it wasn't completely scripted.

This was the time around when radar was being developed. Perhaps they had an analog circuit that could cross correlate a voice signal with a recorded signal, or perhaps they had a matched filter design. If this was the case, that's pretty damn remarkable.

Are psychometrics valid scientifically?

yes, brains perform functions. the performance of how well different brains can perform these functions can be assessed. in principle it's no different than measuring engine performance.

Alright scifags, is there any way I can compare my calculator with a friend's, I am trying to prove the might of my gods. Basically, he thinks his phone can do anything my calculator can do, and I have to prove him wrong to compensate for my ridiculously small penis. Plz hlp

When will we be able to claim (small amounts of) real estate in space? It seems like Mars, for example, at some point will just be an extension of the Earth. Once we are able to start colonizing I think then we could have personal property. Do you guys think real estate on other planets in the future are going to be a thing?

Because right now it's not recognized by any states at all

The Outer Space Treaty forbids claiming ownership of land on other planets. The only things you own on Mars will be those you put there.
>Article II
>Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.

How do I reconcile the fact that as a Hispanic American, I live in a culturally and state white-derived society?

Scientifically and technologically, Hispanics haven't done much, and in fact, although not as bad as blacks, statistically commit a lot of crime and violence and on average have lower IQs than Asians and whites

Will Hispanics ever be of similar economical stature as whites in similar ways that indian, Asian, and other immigrants have?

Or is it a question of cultural heritage

Hispanics built some awesome pyramids. And did achieve a couple of great civilizations.

But if you're talking about the Hispanics of today, who are genetically native-Spanish hybrids? They've only been around since the 1500s, and they were born into a world that was already Europe-dominated. So don't be too discouraged.

Mexican dude here too. My parents didnt finish elementary, i dont think my dad even went in the first place. So i definitely think resources will help increase our presence in science and upper economic classes. But even then we probably wont perform as well asians academically. Fuck it senpai

hey /sci/, actual science/tech question here.

trying to make a heatmap of sorts.

overview:
working on a project that involves analyzing my 1000 or so entries of origin/destination co-ordinates from a CSV. I want to connect each origin/destination pair with a route (freeway, etc.) Then create a heatmap of those routes, to show me which stretches of highway are the most frequented.

also, i'm only using california for this.

what's the easiest way to do this? most methods i have found for creating heatmaps are heatmaps of points, however, i need to translate my points into routes, then create a heatmap of the routes.

>>
>>8129937

what can't you do exactly? find routes?
>>
>>8130048
well, what I have is just a CSV of origin and destination coordinates.

what I would like to do is make the origin/destination coordinates into routes, then display them as a heat map.

I don't know where to begin. I'm trying to decide what program to accomplish this with.

all the things i can think of: matlab, python, etc, won't convert to street routes.

Were these men of science really creationists?

Most of them, old Earth creationists probably, with some of them possibly being deist clockmaker-god believers. Young earth creationism was silly even back then.
>>
>>8129829
That's funny considering AiG's view of Old Earth, as well as naturalism (study of natural sciences).

These people were alive during a time when we didn't have the knowledge about the history of life on earth that we do now, so it's understandable that they wouldn't have believed in evolution

Tycho Brahe was a geocentrist, but does this somehow validate the idea that we can teach 21st century children that the sun revolves around the earth and still expect them to become competent scientists?

World hunger is almost entirely a political problem. World hunger is not a matter of it being hard energetically nor hard in terms of human labor.
>>
>>8129772
>why the fuck did that evolved in the first place
Because evolution doesn't lead to perfection. In most cases the product of evolution is mediocre at best. It doesn't have to be efficient, it just has to work.

How smart are ants? These fuckers on my front lawn seem pretty smart. They were coming inside so I put poison bait by the doors and they stopped coming inside. I sprayed their anthill and they seemed to move the dirt further away from the hole.

How the fuck do they know what poison in and how do they know to avoid it?

How smart is the queen? She seems to be out-smarting me slightly and her brain is tiny as fuck.

How does this work?

>>8129769
Burn them all lol
>>
>>8129769
Collective intelligence, which I'm sorry that I can not describe well as I have not studied it. Anyhow, ants "observe" ants being killed by unknowable factors which by the smell and placement of dead ants is localized. So they work together to move the hive away from the source of pointless death, none of them actually quite "knowing" what they are doing beyond moving dirt and digging.
>>
>>8129819
I would but my neighbors will get pissed. It's just so fucking strange, it's as if they know what the poison is and that it kills them.

There is no fucking way they should know, it's as if the queen told them that eating the bait is bad.

So I poisoned their nest, and they have been pushing the soil away because they "know" it's contaminated.

It's creeping me out. How can they be this smart? Even humans aren't this smart.

Let's say an astronaut is tied to a rope. Attached to a rope is a giant rock. If the astronaut throws the giant rock to his desired location, will he be able to control where he is going throughout all of space?
26 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
He will push himself away from the rock and travel at minimal speed as the rope goes taught.
>>
>>8129583
he will hit the rope with the same force as he applied to the rock and it will stop the rope
>>
There's no external forces therefore the man/rock system won't move.
