Hey /sci/
My bird sized brain cant wrap around the creation of the universe. As far as I understand the prominent theory would be string theory, and a collision of strings generated the big bang. Fine, but where did the strings come from?
Heisenbergs uncertainty principle states that systems can be created out of nothing by spontaniously forming pairs of particle . The closer the sum of energy of these particles, the longer the system can survive. But how would this with the big bang? Also, in what dimension would that have happened?
Please help
>>8138130
Time didn't exist before the big bang so asking what was before it is meaningless. Someone asked the same question years ago in our optics/relativity course at college. All 200 students and the professor laughed at him.
Don't be that guy.
>>8138158
That still doesnt answer the question of how it got there :/
>>8138130
>creation of the universe
>As far as I understand the prominent theory would be string theory
No, the big bang is. There are attempts to shoehorn string theory into cosmology but that's still very early in development.
>Heisenbergs uncertainty principle states that systems can be created out of nothing by spontaniously
No.
>The closer the sum of energy of these particles, the longer the system can survive
No. The closer the spread of energy levels, the longer the system will take to evolve. The relation is ∆E*∆Q/[dQ/dt]>ℏ/2 for some observable quantity Q. So if ∆E is small, dQ/dt will be small too and take a long time for Q to change. This is why energy levels/eigenstates are called stationary states.
>in what dimension would that have happened
This one. The universe doesn't need to be embedded in a higher dimensional space.
what is the science behind brushing your teeth?
are there actual studies in support of the claim that a regular brushing regime reduces risk of developing cavities/bad teeth/etc ?
I never brush my teeth and haven't had any cavities and teeth are shiny white. Brushing is a meme invented by the global dentist society to make you by useless shit like toothpaste. Fuck the jews
>>8131716
This. Do you think people in Israel ever brush their teeth?
Creating human-level AGI or functional human brain emulations should be considered as an act of war against all other nations.
>>8140325
Nuclear retaliation by all (other) nuclear powers should be ensured as the automatic result, to deter such an act of war.
>>8140326
This is the only way to prevent the AI apocalypse or a malthusian emulation scenario, and therefore to preserve humanity.
Has anyone here gone to community college and then transferred to university for their science/engineering degree? It seems like you would be at a huge disadvantage compared to the guys that started at the university in terms of connections, internships, GPA-padding etc...
I ask this because I'm debating going to an average university directly or starting at a community college that has a transfer program with a good university.
I didnt, and dont understand what you mean by gpa paddling. But i know people who did and they had the advantage of lower costs.
>>8137161
Your GPA almost never transfers with you because the classes in community college are much easier. If you fuck up once, you don't have those two years of padding to save you.
>>8137158
OP, I did research for my university on exactly this. We found after multivariate stats that you shouldn't take any science or engineering classes at community college if you want to succeed.
50% of people entering college of science from CC failed out of it. 70% for college of engineering.
So take your core classes at CC, Dave yourself for the science and engineering classes. AMA.

It ain't a secret now. Nice OPSEC dumbass.
What's the point in being a groundbreaking Mathematician when you have this opinion of yourself:
""'I'm not interested in money or fame,' he is quoted to have said at the time. 'I don't want to be on display like an animal in a zoo. I'm not a hero of mathematics. I'm not even that successful; that is why I don't want to have everybody looking at me.'"
like what the fuck? He's pretty much one of the best mathematicians on the planet, and yet he thinks this of himself?
>>8136999
He's so smart he trancended ego and fame
>>8136999
He wants to sound humble. He's probably drowning in pussy and money as we speak.
>>8136999
checked
why does this bother you?
I think you have a very western point of view.
A lot of motivation in western countries come from potential for money, potential for fame, potential for recognition.
I think Perelman was genuinely curious and solved a problem because he wanted to know the answer, not because he wanted the money that came with it.
Have you ever been taking a shit and exploring the Collatz conjecture at the same time for fun? Then you should know the feeling.

>he thinks he can solve human-level AI within ten years
can he do it bros?
>>8137566
He can make new tycoon game and nothing else.
Let's wait and see
>>8137566
>human level AI
Never gonna happen. An AI can at best have the computational power of a Turing machine. Human consciousness is stricly more computationally powerful.

Good breaks, knowing when too much is too much, and self motivation. Rome wasn't built in a day, you need to give it your all several times to see results.
Watch Mel Robbins' "How to stop screwing yourself over" TED talk. Good lecture on realizing you are constantly in your comfort zone and understanding that you have to break that comfort zone when you can't find motivation to do something.
our ancestors sure got their dicky sticky.... but yuck man, they didn't have enough homo sapien trim they had to take a step back on the evolutionary ladder?

You don't know the half of it.

>at a cost
wouldn't be so sure, neanderthals had larger craniums compared to H sapiens at the time. They lacked the socialization skills according to some studies so perhaps that interbreeding resulted in brains that had the neural organization of H sap with larger volume resulting in smarter people that went on to start civilization.
Stupid Questions Thread

Pic related is the Cayley Table dihedral group of 8 elements (symmetries of a square). This doesn't look like any Cayley table I've ever seen (though I'm new to this sort of math).
It looks as though theyve dropped the header rows and columns, which makes sense as beginning the first rows and columns with the identity makes it clear what the elements are. But what are the red and white little boards above and to the left?
Also, why do we have numbers instead of the typical notation (I've seen r for rotation, s for flip about axis of symmetry, and all sorts of variants of the two, but never numbers)
In fact, there is a lot going on here I'm not familiar with. Can someone help me navigate what is being conveyed here?
>take Physics I at a community college
>realize I am terrible at lab
>Lab worth 30% of grade
>Three test worth 40% of grade
>pre-lecture/lab quizzes worth 10% of grade
>homework worth 10% of grade
>Final exam worth 10% of grade
I just started the class, but assuming I do completely terrible on the lab portion of Physics, can I still pass the Physics class if I average 70% on the test?
Does time actually exist? Or is it just a construct of the mind?
>>8130395
Depends on how terrible is terrible.
Just add up like .7 * .4 for your 70% on the tests, .8 * .1 assuming you get 80% on the quizzes, .9 * .1 assuming you get 90% on the homeworks, etc all the way down except for the labs, then subtract from .7 (or whatever overall percentage you want in the class) and divide by .3 and you have the percentage you need to get on your labs in order to get that grade.
ITT: We derive all of mathematics as it was done chronologically, as if we did it.
Holy shit guys, I have this stone and this other one. That makes two stones. We need to make a system for this!
>>8126948
If we have two stones and then we take one away well only have one stone.
>>8126948
Today I'll give you one stone. Tomorrow I'll give you two stones. The day after tomorrow I'll give you three stones. The day after the day after tomorrow I'll give you four stones. Assuming we are both immortal and can continue this forever, would you accept the deal?
>>8126965
Nice try, you're just trying to steal 1/12 of a stone from me, I won't have it.
Sometimes you just want something physical to represent your love for something. Pic related is some math jewelry you can buy (a Hilbert Cube). Anything similar, I'm looking for a necklace or something but any form of math and science is ok.

These Banach-Tarski balls are quite popular presents in my country. People buy them by the dozens around Christmas. No surprise that Hungary has so many great mathematicians.
This topic is probably talked to death on here, but I never get a clear answer where I look.
How long would humanity survive on Earth in the hypothetical scenario of the Sun disappearing without a trace? A week? A few months? A decade?
What kind of technology could sustain us longer?
