So I saw a great shower last weekend.
Was that part of the perseids?

OP, do you know what part of the canary islands is?
I'm from there and i want to know if i can watch it for myself!

Serious question /sci/ is Chemical Engineering a good degree or am I going to end being a lab monkey???

You're a failure if this happens.

But anons here says that is hard to get ChemE jobs in USA nowadays, so who knows.

>based evidence we gathered, we suspect that there may have been life on Mars
>based evidence we gathered, we suspect that there may have been life on Europa
based evidence we gathered, we suspect that there may have been life on Venus
Does anyone else think at this point NASA is just making shit up in a attempt to remain relevant in the public eye so that they can continue getting funding? Almost every few months they are talking about how all these planets in our solar system may or may not contain or be habitable. Its fucking pathetic. I don't want to get rid of the only bastion of space research and travel left, but if they aren't trying to do anything ground breaking like setting up bases on the moon then don't try to bullshit people. I think Mars is a huge waste of time to be honest. Its literally just a fucking rock with no liquid core.

its a huge jump from discovering some remains of flowing water to claim its a sign of potantiel life when the radiation itself doesn't allow biological life to exist anywhere. I'm not even mentioning the other planets due to lack of habitable landscapes, temperatures, atmosphere, necessary elements for life, etc...

It wouldn't be so bad if NASA claims there might be life though. So what if they try to stay relevant. Atleast they are not doing cheap ass journalist shit like cliaming they found ayylmaos with zero evidence or data. You have to understand that these guys are desperate for the budget they deserve and can't have.
>>
>>8264381
When did they say that?

>> bases on the moon
NASA doesn't have enough money to do that. That wouldn't be very ground breaking.

In terms of ground breaking science, probes with new scientific instruments do more.
>>
>>8264391
Mars used to have a much thicker atmosphere and a magnetosphere to absorb/deflect radiation, and Europa has several kilometers of ice as a shield

If erasing certain memories ever became a possibility, would you consider trying it?
22 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>8264340
It already is possible, and I already have done it in a less permanent. In my case I just iteratively stripped associated links to memories and built passive systems to suppress recollection. I left the memories intact and eventually came to reclaim them.

You can bury memories in such a way that you'll never find them again, and you can deliberately fragment and dissolve them to the point where you're incapable of reconstructing any form of it.

My advice, don't bother going down that road. It's better to build a new self and reality by building than selectively removing and thinking you'll be able to better build on what's left. It will only lead to misery. A great irony.
>>
>>8264352
This is interesting as fuck. Please tell more.
>>
>>8264363
What do you want to know specifically?
I just built a crude shell personality and "funneled" myself into it. The brain is already very good at enforcing behavioral consistency (whether it's dependent on context, a given social group, a role), so in part I exploited that.

Every time a memory was brought to mind that I didn't like or find useful, usually autobiographical, I would break it down into its core pieces and identify what spurred the memory, then actively remove all of those links. Or distort them, or render them inoperable, whatever the case might be. It's hard to put it into language, but it's eventually a pretty simple and fluid process. Eventually they just stopped occurring. Associated psychological and emotional aspects of these memories, also at least in a higher sense, were no thus longer present either. Though it's possible artifacts were still ticking away subconsciously.

Etc. There's a lot to be said, and a bit of overlap with the process of deliberately creating and solidifying false memories. I was disgusted and hated myself, and also wanted to avoid stress for various reasons, so I was just using old systems and tools I'd already developed and performing this process naturally. It wasn't planned. Had it been planned and executed as such, I think it's possible a person might never wake up and question how they knew all the things they did, why they can't remember their childhood, why they do anything they do, etc. How would you prevent this? Creation of false memories and a false experienced everyday context.

So I was thinking, in order to increase land mass and/or decrease population density, couldn't we just tilt landmass on a slight angle? Even small angles when applied to a country would greatly increase land mass.

Wrong.

Time is perceived as an increase in entropy.

You can have energy in a system that doesn't change, so no time difference could be measured

What is thunder?
In elementary/middle(?) school a teacher had us brainstorm ideas about weather.

My idea on thunder was lightning "cut" through the air, creating empty space. And the sound of thunder was the air colliding back together.

I should google this.

Hi guys i heard you are smart.
Recently during shower i was thinking about what would happen.
Lets assume we have earth size planet without mountains or other stupid shit. Perfect ball with exact same gravity power in every place. And then we make huge metal bar strong enough not to break. we bend it around whole planet like hula hoop. Not on orbit but just above earth 2-3 meters. what would happen. if it goes down on one side does it floats on other part of the planet? or it just floats. Of course this huge metal bar has no ground support/basis

sorry for shitty english not my native

Yes it would float.
Happy now ?
>>
>>8264006
I dont know man. any proofs it wouldnt fall or spin
>>
Just coz. For reference, the mass of the earth is not evenly distributed. Oddly, fluid mechanics is developing only because the food and chem industries need better methods of even distribution of ingredients.

So, no, your ring would crash to earth. Gravity is not constant, I forget by how much, the gravitational centre of the earth is off by.

Im having hard time understanding concept of coset. Let definition be:

If N<=G, G is group, then define left coset by
gN = {gn | n from N} and g from G.

Representative of coset gN is any element of that coset? Is that true? I understand that if N is kernel of some homomorphism, then gn = g1N for any g1 in G. This leads me to thinking of cosets as some kind of translation trough group. Does that mean that element g from G is the representative of coset and not gn element?

>>
when its said "the subset of all left coset of some subgroup" is it meant that i spam every g from G to subgroup N? What is it Im getting then and how come they make disjoint sets that togather complete group G?

Is it reasonable to have engineering students take an easier English course than other students?
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
College level general ed english is pretty easy. The only points I ever lost in that class were due to the prof wanting us to write papers relating to our major and they couldn't handle all the technical language in the respective fields after telling us to write the paper directed to people in our field.

Also, when you see majors classes like that, they rigor is the same, but they tend to guide the course in a direction more suiting for the major. A lot of schools require hard science majors to take an english class framed around writing for journals, where the engineering english may focus on writing technical documents or maintenance plans or procedure, rather than using flowery language they focus on being clear and concise.
>>
I took an easy english class for engineering and we wrote resumes and pitched and designed a product
No essays whatsoever lel
>>
>>8263963
Idk if that is the same thing, but at my school everyone had to take Engl101 + one higher level writing class. They had a higher level class for stem majors about writing scientific papers.
