Since physics appears to have come to a dead end, do we need superintelligence to make more progress?
What are the most promising routes toward superintelligence?
-AGI
-Crispr
-Neuroengineering
I would guess that neuroengineering is the fastest route, since reverse engineering something that evolved over millions of years in a tiny fraction of the time is unlikely using either of the first two methods. We don't need to reinvent the wheel. All the work has already been done for us. Our brains are infinitely malleable and adaptable. The only thing standing in our way is our squeamishness. (Please don't call it "ethics".)

Now that the dust has settled, who was right?

FUCK OFF WITH YOUR MEME SCIENCE PSEUDOACADEMIC TRASH THEY WERE BOTH WRONG
>okay umm
>let me give you an intuitive sense..
>gonna make this blue... no wait purple is better
>let me do this in the same color
>copy........ paste.......copy........ and paste....
>*Sal said X when he meant to say Y* subtitle pops up
>let me make this the same color...
Why is he so wildly recommended for learning things again?
what are you even le talking about
>>8275884
Because he teaches basic things that a child can understand by themselves and people praise him for being "so understandable"
>>8275884
Yeah his constant commentary on his writing can be annoying, but hes doing a very good thing. I wouldnt recommend him to anyone in university because you should have developed your own study skills by then, but to someone in high school or a trade that needs help learning a new concept hes very easy to follow.
Remember, not everyone is a math major
I'm learning about Chemistry for the first time Via Crash Course.
on this video now, it's a long series:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV7U4yAXL5I
This shit is confusing the fuck out of me - am I brainlet, or will Khan Academy do a better job at explaining it?
How can you not get that? Wtf
>>8275895
>I'm learning about Chemistry for the first time

Genetics determine everything, including what diseases you get and how long you live. When will he media eventually stop blaming everything on lifestyle? The only exception is diet.
Explain Faraday
His parents were retarded
>>8275862
He got lucky that those genes didn't activate, anon.
When do you become a physicist? Bachelor, major or PhD.?
>>8275790
When you publish an original research paper.
Fuck you dude you'll never be a physicist
Hey /sci/, I posted this on /adv/ yesterday, but didn't get many helpful responses, so I thought you guys might be able to help me. Here's the story: a couple weeks ago some skin rubbed off my thumb. The same day, I ate Doritos. Some Dorito dust got on my fingers, and I didn't wash my hands until a little bit later. It's been over two weeks now, and I think I have Dorito dust trapped under a layer of skin on my thumb. Can this cause some kind of horrible infection or something? And if so, is there anything I can do other than cut the skin off?
>>8275754
we are not doctors
we are mathematicians, engineers and physicists
so please fuck off
it takes about 50 days for your body to change skin, so it will go away eventually
>>8275760
>we are mathematicians, engineers and physicists
[citation needed]
I finished a math course about a year ago which was pretty basic and now I've got a "math urge" of some sort. I've been using the for dummies book's to get back up to speed. Is there better books out there or should I do the work books up to calculus?
Khan academy.
You're welcome.
Jesus FUCK. I just gotta ask, is "babby" a /sci/ meme? I see everyone on this board misspelling it the same way.
>>8275719
look up "how is babby formed?"

>'hack-proof'
hah
I havent hacked it yet, maybe its really hack proof...
Maybe it has quantum eavesdropping detection but I'm not sure how that could work in a satellite.

Just what the fuck is this thing? At first everyone was saying it was just dust/rocks dimming our view of the star but that, along with pretty much all other natural phenomenon have been ruled out.
Did we really just stumble upon an alien superstructure?
we have literally no idea. like you said, everything that's been proposed has been determined unlikely given our other observations of the same star.
i'm personally crossing my fingers for alien superstructure but to be honest? i'm not holding my breath on that either. if it was aliens, we're talking engineering projects on a scale bigger than multiple cross-sections of the larger planets in our own solar system.
obviously all bets are off in terms of how long a species has had to work on something and what level their tech is at to let them build a superstructure, but there has to be a point where we say "everything about our current physics says that this is either so difficult nobody sane would try it, or that if you even could do it you probably wouldn't need to".
whatever it is? it's fucking WEIRD, and it will turn at least one field completely upside down once we figure it out
>>8275484
>and it will turn at least one field completely upside down once we figure it out

Can you describee more of problem for ones who doesnt read keplers data all day?
Tell me something about life which most people find acceptable that you find unacceptable - and which can be changed by scientific and technological endeavour?
The taboo against incest.
>>8275413
What scientific / technological endeavour do you propose would change that?
>>8275421
Probably designer babies that will take care of any genetic issues with an incest baby.
As for my suggestion, I'm hoping that any sort of accessible travel within the solar system along with colony technology will allow people to set up their own experimental societies far away from the overbearing forces of mainstream society. Something like all those weird christian charter townships in early america.
Is there a lesbian version of Oedipus complex? In which the daughter wants to bang the mom. Pic is a generic mom.
No but there is a complex making daughters wanna bang their dads. Like all girls have it.
>>8275158
Well, considering that it's made up: sure thing.
Just make it up and it's as real as the original male complex.
>>8275158

Guess that's China confirmed for god status then

hah

topkek, someone didn't get the difference between causality and locality in QM
>>8275146
Yeah, probably the journalist, since they're generally the ones responsible for stupid or lying science headlines.
I work for my statistics prof as student assistant. He suggested that I learn discrete mathematics but didn't tell me what exactly. I have a lot of book pdfs now but I feel like they all cover different stuff and am not sure which I should actually study now.
I am doing a Survey Statistics major if that helps.
Which parts of discrete mathematics should I learn? Any book recommendations? Also, general discrete math thread
>>8274963
Telling someone to learn discrete mathematics is mathematicians' way to tell you to fuck off
>>8274963
>Also, general discrete math thread
Why would anyone want to talk about such a boring topic? kek
>>8274966
He's not a real mathematician though.
Is this really the best science book ever?
