what's the moment math looked cool to you?

for me it's with adding number successively from m-n.

basically if you added numbers 1-13 you get what's equivalent to multiplying 7x7, which can be represented as a grid counting through the row and column. i know it's basic arithmetic, but it was the first time i liked math because it made sense and wasn't just plug n chug.

I was the kind of nerdy kid who was always excited by math books as early as middle school but I never really had the brains to do real math at the university level, at least the way it's normally taught

>basically if you added numbers 1-13 you get what's equivalent to multiplying 7x7,

I might be wrong but I'm pretty sure 91 isn't equal to 49.

(Natural News) New research conducted at theAlbert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University has found that chemotherapy spreads cancer throughout the body, causing a sharp increase in cancer cells circulating throughout the body (including the lungs).

Led by Dr. George Karagiannis, the research focused onchemotherapy treatment of breast cancer, but further studies plan to see how chemotherapy might also spread cancers of other tissues, too. The research was published in Science Translational Medicine and is entitled Neoadjuvant chemotherapy induces breast cancer metastasis through a TMEM-mediated mechanism.

A summary of the study reports that “the authors discovered that several types of chemotherapy can increase the amounts of TMEM complexes and circulating tumor cells in the bloodstream.” It concludes that “chemotherapy, despite decreasing tumor size, increases the risk of metastatic dissemination.”

The universe, by its definition, contains everything that can exist.

- Let X be something that exists before the universe exists.
- Thus, X is not a part of the universe.
- This is a contradiction to the definition of universe.
- Thus, X does not exist.

Therefore nothing has existed "before" the universe. Consequently, the universe has always existed.

In other words, the shit like "big bang" and "a creator" are just bullshit that brainlets believe in.

If one wanted to learn a language, not for the purposes of actually utilizing it in real life conversing with others, but for the solitary intellectual fields that would be unlocked by doing so as well as the unique points of view unlocked by the aphorisms and grammatical structure of the language, which one would be best to learn?

I assume Latin, but maybe also French or German? Or Russian? Anyone?

I would recommend the language that's most different from your mother tongue.
I'm Hungarian native, studied English, Japanese, Russian and Basque. All different families, different logic, different writing system, different phonology.
If you only speak English, your best bet is Japanese or Russian, because they're both exotic and have plenty of study material and entertainment (novels, movies, etc).
German would make the least sense in your case, since it's very similar to English.
Good luck, it's a great journey and definitely worth it!

Alright sci, bear with me on this, but. I live in Oregon; somewhere near where the band of totality for the eclipse had occurred (but just barely outside of it). I was walking to the store to get groceries while hoping I'd find some glasses; sure enough, a woman let me use hers. I also took some photos of the sun, as well as photos of the projections of the eclipse in the shadows of nearby trees. Yet...in the 20-25 seconds of optimal darkness, I observed something very odd in the ground (everywhere on the ground, not necessarily in the tree shadows). I noticed very, very, very subtle, dim, yet silver strands of dancing light; millions of these dancing and twirling during this short time span. I suspected it was some representation of the sun's own corona on the ground, but I'm not so sure. Google doesn't yield any answers with the search criteria I've tested. Has anyone else ever made this observation? Can anyone corroborate or explain mine? Thanks.

Thanks, this sounds (and appears) exactly like what I saw. It was sort of a mystical-like surprise seeing them as the day got really dark.

Although, I should note that what I saw was not shadow bands moving in parallel, but in a massive jumble. It was more akin to slivers of silvery light moving among one another in a complete disorder.

Why is the RH referred to as a "hypothesis", not "conjecture" or "theorem", as many other problems are?

Looking at pic related, it almost sounds like these people are talking about whether or not god exists, or something of that nature.

I think there is way more to this question than meets the eye, however I'm having a real tough time getting at what that truth might be.

How am I to think along the right lines if I don't know that the right line is even the right line to begin with?

Hypothesis and conjecture mean the same thing. The Riemann hypothesis is called a hypothesis because of historical reasons and because that sounds cooler than the Riemann conjecture.

A theory has been formally proven and is known to be 100% true.

For example, the Pythagorean therm has been formally proven and is known to apply to all right triangles. If the Pythagorean theorem had not been formally proven, all we'd have is a bunch of right triangles that all seem to follow the a^2 + b^2 = c^2. However, we might wonder if triangles that dont follow a^2 + b^2 = c^2 exist. In this case, a^2 + b^2 = c^2 would be known as the Pythagorean conjecture, or hypothesis. However, this is not the case. We have proven the Pythagorean theorem and we do know all right triangles follow a^2 + b^2 = c^2.
>>
>>9121902
Hypothesis, however is more used in the context of scientific experiments, not mathematics, and more has the connotation of something meant to be tested.

What I'm trying to get to is that it is possible that the assumption that the RH may not even be true is possibly a mental barrier to proving it.
>>
>>9121914
I dont think so. Certainly, the assumption that the RH may not be true is not a mental barrier to disproving it.
Assuming that the RH was true or false would be a grave mistake, one that would result in mistakes in other proofs.

ITT I will try to solve (and in fact solve) all the Millennium Prize Problems one by one. I will do so by a new proof technique that has been proved to be quite powerful. It combined homothopy theory with algebraic geometry. Having said that, the proof technique itself is elementary though. So, let's go ahead.

1. [math] \displaystyle P=NP [/math]

By definition, polynomila algorithms admit decomposition in chains of smaller polynomial algorithms. Consequently, polynomial time algorithms do not solve problems where blocks, whoose order is the same as the underlying problem, require simultaneous resolution. Thus, in fact [math] \displaystyle P \neq NP [/math]

2. Hodge conjecture

Assuming that if a compact Kähler mainfold is complex-analytically rigid, the area-minimizing subvarieties approach complex analytic subvarieties. The set of singularities of an area-minimizng flux is zero in measure. The rest it left to the reader as an easy routine excersize.

3. Riemann hypothesis

This is a simple experimental fact. [math] \displaystyle 10^{13} [/math] roots of the Riemann hypothesis have been already tested and it suffices for all practical applications. In fact, one state a suitable statistical hypothesis and check it on the sample of, say, [math] \displaystyle 10^5 [/math] roots.

4. Yang–Mills existence and mass gap

Well, discrete infinite bosonic energy-mass spectrum of gauge bosons under Gelfand nuclear triples admits non-perturbative quantization of Yang-Mills fields whence the gauge-invariant quantum spectrum is bounded below. A particular consequence is the existence of the mass gap.

5. Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness

(To be continued)

(Cont.)

I haven't worked this one in such detail, but observing that

[math] \displaystyle \| L (u, v) \| ^ 2 = \sum_{n \ge 25} u ^ 2_ {2n} v ^ 2_ {2n +1} / n ^ 2 \le C\|(u_n/\sqrt n)\|_4^2 \|(v_n/\sqrt n)\|_4^2 \le C\|(u_n/\sqrt n)\|_2^2 \|(v_n/\sqrt n)\|_2^2 = C \left (\sum u ^ 2_ {n} / n \right) \left (\sum v ^ 2_ {n} / n \right) [/math]

one can easily find at leat one closed-form solution applying the bubble integral. In the equation, [math] \displaystyle L [/math] is a bilinear operator.

6. Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture

The problem with former attempts has been in the way elliptic curves have been dealt with. But this really admits a proof with a computer by checking the (finitely many) categories of curves.

I also have a simpler than Perelman's proof of the Poincare conjecture, but it's not worth the prize anymore

Anyone have anti-scientific parents?

I have vivid memories of my parents taking me to the science museum because my aunt gave us free tickets, and my dad was always sort of hurrying us along because he thought it was kind of childish and stuff. But quite frankly they needed this science museum more than I did

There were cool astronomical exhibits with basic diagrams of the solar system and things such as this, giving the relative scale that you could walk down.

There were cool little games where you had to weigh out equal measures of metal balls to keep this big contraption balanced and it taught you about leverage and stuff.

There were cool exhibits showing life sized dinosaur figures and a timeline of the major species that have evolved leading up to us

My parents went in there with the attitude "this is for kids" which indeed they were right, it was aimed at kids. But quite frankly they needed it more than me, my dad specifically, because he doesn't believe in evolution, doesn't understand basic astronomical concepts like sun vs. planet vs. moon etc. It's a shame and I wish maybe science museums oriented themselves in a slightly more adult way so ignorant parents wouldn't stand by while their kids did the science reading. Kind of ironic. Idk. Anyone else?

My father doubts the big bang because he doesn't understand it, he really hates cosmology in general for whatever reason. Doesn't seem to have a problem with evolution oddly enough despite being super Catholic though. When I try to explain to him that the big bang isn't necessarily at odds with Catholic cosmology anyway and in a way reaffirms it he doesn't want to hear it.

My parents aren't anti scientific they just aren't scientists. My dad doesn't get epistemology and that can be a headache. As my dad is extremely intelligent and uneducated, I feel like he gets insecure when I talk down from the ivory tower. My mom and dad both know pretty much everything they know about science through raising me. I was a sperg kid that demanded to be read life encyclopedias instead of stories for bedtime, good for me my mom taught elementary school. I have always been a walking repository of facts because of my fondness for dry, analytical information. As a young adult I was a rightfully angsty life sciences kid. Often lecturing them about ecology and the state of things. They got to see me grow up loving biology and then the joy sucked out of my life with the rest of the living world. It seems they have suffered a lot of my emotional trauma with me. Overall they are very receptive to science but they do not get it like I do.
