Proving all those theories in physics like string theory and quantum physics right?
I'm scared they'll destroy earth.
>>8286926
It literally hasn't proven 1 thing all this time. It just gives more "evidence" of "what might be true", but not absolute facts. Even the "discovery" of the Higgs Boson isn't fully correct, but popsci tards don't know that.
>candidate boson
>possible Higgs boson
>Following the 2012 discovery, it was still unconfirmed whether or not the 125 GeV/c2 particle was a Higgs boson.

CERN is nothing but a farm for grant chasing.
Is this bullshit? Really looks like it. http://www.collective-evolution.com/2016/07/07/scientists-discover-that-humans-have-a-magnetic-6th-sense-to-detect-something-we-cant-even-see/
But it says scientists discovered it
I read we might've even seen the fields before like, we had some special cones in our eyes or something that detected them but yeah. It's all lost now anyways.

I just watched the new and improved Cosmos and got into science.
I've always sucked at math and physics but this journey that I shared with Neil Tyson really spoke out to me and I will now study hard to get into a university.
Neil Tyson is probably the greatest scientist of our time. He popularized complex modern science and made it interesting. These days people are dumber than ever, following made-up social constructions such as feminism. We need science. And Neil is here to help us.
dis is gonna be a good thread :')

I think Tyson and all those other pop sci guys should be thanked for getting the general public/politicians interested in science i mean shit it's a good way to get funding.
What does /sci/ think about IQ ?
I think that it's pure bullshit that only insecure people use to feel superior when they have a little power or no degree.
You ?
>>8286657
What is the evolutionary advantage of superiority?
>>8286662
Being superior =/= feeling superior ?
>>8286657
I think the people who flaunt their IQ's or swear by them, and the people who are wholeheartedly opposed to it like you, are all two sides of the same coin. Ignorant, insecure, and not really all that smart either.
IQ obviously has a correlation to someone's intellect. And yet, it's an extremely simple tool. Think on how many ways you could describe someone's skill with computers for instance:
Do they know PC, Mac, something else? Windows (which version), IOS, Linux? What about their individual software? What about games, programming, scripting, how about hardware? And all their subgroups, the subgroups of their subgroups etc....
It's insanely complex. Now take that same tree structure, apply it to everything one can put their mind to in this world of ours... and then describe that overall ability with a number basically somewhere between 100 and 200.
How accurate do you think that can be, how detailed? Yes, IQ describes the ability to learn, memorize, and reason. It should not be the measure of acquired information. But the point is similar, because the ability to learn different kinds of information varies in a very similar way, from person to person.
Can you leave the universe, if you really wanted to?
>>8286633
Leave the universe? That doesn't make sense. Where would you go? The universe is everything. Travel 10 fucktillion light years in a random direction and you're still in the universe.
Yeah, just kill yourself and your literally out.
>>8286641
You're not. You're still in the universe, as a decomposing corpse.
I was going through some old stuff recently, some old assignments and projects from way back, and realized that I knew more about the planets and prehistoric earth when I was 7 than I do now. And then I thought why the fuck did we learn about planets. Why did we have to spend 6 hr/180 days every year in a classroom?
I guess you have to write essays and writing skills do develop continuously from elementary school through middle and high school. Same with reading comprehension and literary analysis. But Math you take pre-algebra 6th or 7th grade. Why does it take 6 years of learning how to read an analog clock before you basically start from scratch in pre-alg and finally get to build from there? HIstory was the same, just random stories until you get to 6th/7th with ancient history and build from there.
Science is the worst though. So much cool shit to learn and kids get stuck with dinosaurs and rocks for a good decade until they can learn actual basics in physical and biological science. Makes for a good diorama I guess.
I can buy that it's just because dinosaurs and rocks are pretty cool to kids, but science is cool as shit Im pretty sure they can think of some experiments or something that kids can do while learning. After that it can branch out logically like it does in high school, get em exposed to different pathways early.
I dont know if kids just cant learn well until they're 12 or something, maybe that's why things are this way. I think that most of them just dont really care about school, dont grow up in a household that allows them to learn. I cant blame them for that, they're kids. But the education system can do something about it, and if there's some structure at least they'll struggle with actually relevant material.
Also yeah I guess you can also say it's fucking elementary school like you're not supposed to actually do anything. Just wondering if anyone has anything to say about this?

Recent understand suggests that schooling in pre-school, and primary school is absolutely critical on your intelligence in later life, much more so than high school and college/university.
How does photon upconversion work?
The only one I can find an explanation for is two-photon excitation.

I believe that all planets that are imaged are observed instantly in the sky and not determined by the speed of light. I believe that stars are not clear images but instead some sort of composite of the star itself and the corona which it produces. I believe that when things are measured small- that the speed of light has the most application. I believe that the speed of light is a purely manmade venture and that it finds its' justification in the measurement of our essential world bound instruments.
I do not believe that the observation of Jupiter and its' moons deserves any delay as it goes through its' yearly cycle. I do not believe that the observation of Mercury is delayed (or any other measured planet). I believe that treating the varying distances of planetary bodies from Earth with a Universal speed of light is incorrect. Speed of light is special not universal.

Logically thinking, isn't there a higher chance of the universe being a simulation than there is of it actually being real?
Any intelligent lifeform would probably want to simulate an universe (humans would do it if they could). Since nothing is actually random, if you know the starting conditions of your universe and simulate it with the ability to control the time, you can see into the future.
Let's assume our universe is a simulation, and quarks and atoms are simply digital information. The real universe hosting this simulation would have to be a bigger scale than our own in order to achieve enough resources to simulate a universe of our size.
If the real universe is a centillion times larger than ours (can be any number a lot higher than ours, they'll just scale it down appropriately), they'd easily be able to get enough resources to build a supercomputer through advanced technology and automation.
And then comes the part that makes me believe this is more likely than not. They'd simulate more intelligent lifeforms, which will result in the simulated lifeform making a supercomputer themselves and simulating another universe on an even smaller scale.
It just seems so extremely likely to have happened. If I'm retarded please explain how it's not possible or likely.
>>8286422
I want to fuck your mouth and cum in your throat.
woah dude...
relaly makes u think
>>8286422
The assumption that it is actually possible to build a simulation in this way due to a theoretical increase in scale, rather than reality being contained within itself?
Howcome everyone is talking about CERN and their LHC, but no one here on /sci/ seems to even know the existance of MAX IV?
I mean, MAX IV is quite more advanced than LHC and they will be able to conduct diffrent testings, which isnt doable in LHC.
>>8286332
>one of a kind multiple-TeV particle accelerator used to search for completely unknown physics
vs
>one of nearly 100 few-GeV accelerators used to make X-rays to study things like condensed matter
I'd imagine because of the massive scale and cooperation that went into the LHC along with the fundamental, widely desired results it was built to find.
>>8286367
>X-rays to study things like condensed matter
That's ONE of the multiple things MAX IV will be doing, yeah..?
They have a particle accelerator where they'll conduct tests much like LHC.
And their particle accelerator is smaller, yes, but that just means the tests will be done in a smaller scale? Does not mean they will preform high end tests on unkown subjects?
Regardless of that, it's still the worlds strongest and most advanced synchrotron radiation facility?
You genuinly believe it does not deserve to be known by the anons of /sci/ simply because it's not locked on ONE small portion of accelerator-related science like LHC?
>>8286394
Well, I'm not questioning why LHC is famous.
I'm simply questioning why a faility like MAX IV is entierly unkown to /sci/
What's the worst case, but still realistic, scenario for the LHC?
People always seem to be hand wringing over it, but from what I've read CERN has everything under control.
It breaks and costs us a lot of money. There's no even small-scale existential risk.
Future particle accelerators of much higher power really might carry some massive, global or cosmic level risks. The LHC is nowhere near that though.

Thanks for answering my question!
Can someone give me the lowdown on wi-fi radio band? Completely safe for long term use even up close? For example my niece is lying with her ipad on her stomach for hours every day, is that all fine and harmless?
There is more danger involved in standing outside in the sunlight for 15 minutes than there is in being exposed to any amount of radio waves. The likelyhood that they would have any significant, intelligible effect on the human body is unbelievably low. If you want to know more about why, look up Radio Waves and read anything about what they are. Using your deductive skills and knowledge of biology, put two and two together. And then sage and die.
>>8286297
Thanks for the answer, even though you're a cheeky little cunt. Anyone have a differing opinion?
>>8286694
studies have shown that a couple of hours of a wlan sourcr nearby have the around the same effects as 15 minutes of sunlight on you. The likelyhood that this has long term health effects on you is in fact surprisingly high.
If you want to know more about why, look up Radio Waves and read anything about what they are. Using your deductive skills and knowledge of biology, put two and two together.
Bumping for interest myself.
