The science of the life. The most complicated science.
>>
As someone getting a masters in an ecology program, id say the science is there. It seems biology answers questions by looking for exceptions to a rule and explaining them (maybe all science does this) but you cant just throw bullshit out there. You have to test it and prove it with some amount of certainty (a lot of replication and good stats to back up statements) of you want to publish. If you are a modeler trying to explain every input in a system the math is rigorous, other wise i only see basic calculus and algebra being applied to describe curves. id also prefer the term "naturalist" over "biologist" to differentiate from cell bio people. I wouldnt even mind not being called a scientist but the research in the field is important whatever you call it. I dont know why, maybe intelligence or limits by instrumentation, but i know it isnt going to lead to some unifying theory of life. But it is important to make policy around wildlife and agriculture based on data and research

What do you anons think about the species concept?
From a birth we are taught that everything is a separate kind of organism, which can be catagorised into a unique species. This whole concept underpins so many facets of science, but is not real. Its just a construct by humans so we can catagorise and understand life around us better, but from my understanding there really is no such thing as a species.
Can anyone prove me wrong?

Is there anyone on /sci/ who isn't a student?

I've only recently started checking this board regularly, but it seems like every single poster here is in school. Aren't there any posters who just post here because they're interested in science and math?

In this picture, you can assume the relationship between the two columns is 2 * x = Y just by looking at it.

How would you find the relationship between two columns with several million numbers and no obvious sequence or pattern?

I've done some searching and the closest thing I can find is the formula for linear regression.

Wow, you answered your own question.

Great thread OP. I'm sad it's over.

if the numbers in one column do not repeat you find a polynomial of degree n where n is the size of the columns, that maps the first one to the other.

How can there even be gay people from an evolutionary standpoint? Gay people have no way to pass on their genes since two guys can't make a baby. So how in the hell does it exist at all? I'm pretty sure this proves that you can't be born gay. Those that call themselves "gay" just have a fetish for males, same as one guy might have fetish for asians or blondes etc.

What is the /sci/ approved way to developing a good work ethic

How do we end the "smart but lazy" meme once and for all
36 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>work ethic
Do not waste your time creating such a thing, it pans out as a concept designed to distract and disorganize workers /age slaves.

I don't have a work ethic. I operate on universal underlying personal ethics. I probably appear to employers to have excellent work ethic, but it's strictly an indirect consequence of the above. An illusion in that sense. If I ever compromise my ethics, I either have a good reason, or will very soon be living with the knowledge I was too weak, stupid, or cowardly to do things how I truly thought was right.

The best work ethic is one that can prove its own irrelevance.

You'll be okay.

So me an a friend have been debating on a small problem. Say you have 4 dice, you role them and drop the smallest number. Will the medium be the same or different (on average) if you rolled 3 dice and rerolled the smallest?
26 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Are you asking the "median" of the dice being identical to the median of the previous roll?
>>
>>8419515
different, removing the smallest number will create a higher average than re-rolling a die
>>
>>8419519
Close enough to make a difference. Like of done enough times, will the 4 dice method give me better ( or worse, or the same) numbers than reroling the lowest

Do you guys actually learn during class/lectures?

I sit there like a cuck and can't learn a damn thing. Taking statics, physics, calc 3 and some other shit and I don't learn anything, while my classmates seem to get it.

I have to go to the library or learn the material myself to get it, class is a waste of time.

I've had good teachers and bad, my favorite so far is one who expected you to read the section before class and who worked like hell to be a suplimentary source for the book. We actually held discussion rather than lecture.

Read the lectures material beforehand, turd. The kids who just "get it" are doing just that.

One can't hope to make meaningful observations and statements the first time they see something
>>
Okay, looks like the way to go is to read ahead. Thanks boys.

Any study that takes subjective analysis is not very valid

Hypothesis need to be validated by a definitive metric, your professors will laugh at you when you introduce your taste in women as the metric for beauty
>>
Also, I did a study on who gave the best blowjobs, black people, Asian people, white people, and your mom.
In a double blind randomized trial, 5 men in their 20s that were heterosexual chose your mom as the best fellatio

>Not very valid

Wew lad, take a look at a social science journal sometime. Just because it's not valid doesn't mean it can't be published.

Anyway OP, in principle this shouldn't be that hard. You'd need to get a fairly large and "random" sample of couples and each subject agree to undergo a "hotness" test. For example, you could have each participant rate the attractiveness of some or all of the other participants of the opposite gender (in private and anonymously, of course) and then take the average.

Then figure out what you mean by "ugly" and "attractive" (maybe ugly is less than average-1.5*StdDev and attractiveness more than average+1.5*StdDev) and see how many of each couple there are in your sample.

You'll also need to figure out how to get a p-value less than .05, which means you'll need to come up with a competing Null Hypothesis under which the result is unlikely. A reasonable null hypothesis might be something like Correlation(male attractiveness, female attractiveness)>r where r is a parameter of your choosing. If r=1 so that attractiveness is perfectly correlated in each couple, then assuming that any couple at has a discrepancy in attractiveness, this will yield a p-value of 0. Experiment with your data and see if you can choose a "plausible" value for r (say r=.5) while still keeping the p-value below .05. If you can't do this, then keep collecting more data and stop as soon as the p-value gets sufficiently small.

Good Luck!

If you can't solve this problem, then you are a brainlet who needs to get off this board.

Consider a function [math] F:\mathbb{C}^2\to\mathbb{C}^2 [/math] of the form F(x,y)=(p(x,y), q(x,y)) where the components p and q are polynomials.

Suppose the Jacobian determinant [math] p_xq_y-p_yq_x [/math] is a non-zero complex number.

Show that the components of G^{-1} are polynomials.

If you've taken any real analysis course this should not be difficult.
