Hi /sci/, I failed my first Calculus test, I need to pass my second one this Wednesday. Is there still hope? It's based on Stewart's 8th ed. My plan is to do the chapter reviews because my professor teaches from the book most of the time. General studying ideas appreciated, thank you.

make flash cards, use mnemonics
don't do practice problems, waste of time
You have internet access, nigger. Thousands of material to help you out. Stop being lazy.

Pretty much this. Now, get off 4chinks.

Hi sci, could any physicist tell me when does algebra become relevant for the physicist? Because I don't see any use in learning homomorphism of groups and other useless stuff. Thanks.
>even physicists can't handle elementary mathematical ideas
and this is why science is dying, how do you even get this far without realizing the importance of math?
Group theory is a rather useful tool if you are going to do any sort of theory work. If you are an experimentalist, you can probably get away with only a glancing knowledge so that you can pretend to understand the theorists.
>>8427618
I don't imply it is difficult. The thing is, this is abstract, and physics is practical. My question is very humble, could any physicist tell me when does algebra become relevant? I mean abstract algebra, not stuff like matrices stuff. Is it usefull to know the properties of an abelian group for a physicist? I know that it could become relevant when talking about vector space, which leads to matrices, which is usefull for physicists. But all the abstract stuff is useless right?
Any java programmers here? I'm getting some strange behavior in Netbeans. Here is the code that executes if any key is pressed (evt is the event):
jButton7.setBackground(c);
if (evt.getKeyCode() == 192)
{
System.out.print("I'm here");
jButton4.setBackground(c);
}
If I press any key, jButton7 turns blue. If I press the key with keyCode 192, "I'm here" is displayed on the monitor but jButton4 DOESN'T change color.
It's like the conditional statement is making setBackground() unable to execute.
Java has nothing to do with science/mathematics. It's not even used in scientific computation since it's so slow compared to C/C++. GTFO and never come back.

Place a what where to get into which function to see if who does what?
Please explain. I'm a beginner to Java.
How important is he to the field of biology?
>>8427585
He was a sinful man full of hate of God and should be deleted from books altogether.
He was important, but not in a good way. Many biologists still believe in his theory of evolution even though there is ever-growing amount of evidence that debunks it. I'm not saying that everyone should believe in creation like I do but science can't progress if scientists keep clinging onto old failed theories instead of being critical.
Daily reminder that psychology is not a science and should be abandoned and banished from academia.
>>8427451
Ok, thank you.
>>8427460
With sociology and gender studies of course.
>>8427451
What a pity. Up to the 1950s there was some good research in psychology, for example on propaganda, brainwashing and psychological torture. Today psychology students are only taught "gender" bullshit.
What is your favorite /sci/ piece of software?

What scientific basis is there for fat people just having bad luck with their genes (opposed to bad self-discipline)?
>>8427336
bad luck? in terms of morbid obesity there are some people with legit metabolic disorders, but the vast majority of fat people who are unhealthy are just disgusting slobs who have no self control.
>>8427336
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1hbPXooB1U
An interesting watch. To sum it up, everybody has a 'natural weight' that they will gravitate to if left to their own devices. For some its higher than others, hence why some people struggle with weight more than others. These people will require higher levels of self control to maintain a healthy weight.
Calories in calories out
People are fat because they eat more
People are skinny because they eat less
People are often fat because their parents didn't raise them to eat properly. The amount of times I see some dumb ass mother feeding her infant child a pack of crisps, it's disgusting.
If you eat properly you will be healthy
If you eat poorly you will be fat
The tiny exceptions to the rule do not make up the ridiculous number of people that are fat in the world today.
It is harder to eat healthy nowadays than it was in the past, absolutely everything you see in supermarkets are pumped full of unhealthy shit. If you want to be healthy you've got to pay attention to your diet.
Some animals lack memory, intelligence, individual awareness of each other, but they can't comprehend this fact
I doubt that human brain is perfect so I wonder is there any research on what humans might lack?
Or what kind of intelligence or understanding we might acquire if brain evolution proceeds?
Well there's the argument that the brain lacks other senses not known to us yet. If someone is born blind then they live their life not knowing what sight is.
There's the possibility that humans are living this life not knowing how to perceive certain senses but it's possible that through extensive evolutionary processes the human brain may acquire these sense.
However we have been evolved to conform to the senses needed to live on Earth and until we explore other areas of the universe, we may just be limited to these given senses.
>>8427306
Human brain is done, we have reached the peak o our intellectual potential its all downhill from here faggot.
>>8427306
There are lots of senses and therefor ways to process certain information, that we lack.
The human brain is also not the best at every feature we do share with other animals.
Some animals have been proven to have faster processing of visual information and a better short time memory.
Only numbers representing tangible, finite objects exist. Prove me wrong. Protip: you can't.
>>8427279
Natural numbers represent discrete countable tangibles.
Integers extend that representation to nothing and debts of tangibles.
Rationals allow for fractions of tangibles.
Real numbers represent continuous tangibles like time and temperature.
Complex numbers represent tangible state variables in a linear AC circuit environment.
Okay looks like we've got everything.
>>8427279
>Only numbers representing tangible, finite objects exist
No they don't. Your image was right, numbers don't exist.
Math certainly was inspired by nature, and you can apply the concept of numbers to real life things.
But math is purely conceptual and build upon axioms, created by humans.
>>8427279
Numbers only exist insofar as they are ideas. Finite numbers correspond directly to objects in the real world. Infinite numbers perhaps only correspond to other ideas, such as how many finite numbers there are. They're both still ideas.
Alternatively, no numbers exist because it's all just a symbol manipulation game.
Why is baldness generally considered an undesirable trait? Humans have been evolving less and less hair since forever, and it's not like in the modern times you can't just wear a hat when it's nippy.
inb4
>t. Baldy McBaldson
yes
Because if you're sick and malnourished, you lose hair. It's not a good sign.
>>8427235
>t. Baldy McBaldson
>Humans have been evolving less and less hair since forever
Yeah, that's why it's so common to see chimps with picrelated kind of hair.
I have head full of thick hair. I feel bad for you hairlets.
Is he the real deal /sci/? A liar, or a lunatic, or a man who will save us all?

I hope so because if someone could convincingly redpill me on singularity/immortality/etc I would have a nice reason not to commit suicide

Help me /sci/, I know you can.
My current speaker setup displays an extremely strange phenomenon.
I keep my speakers running at all times and between them is roughly a 15ft wire connecting the unpowered speaker to the power source-speaker combo. In addition, there is a 15ft 3.5mm male-male wire connecting my laptop to the aux input.
Sometimes (very rarely), the speakers output a foreign signal that sounds similar to an AM or CB radio broadcast.
I don't understand why this is happening.
Please help, this is seriously confusing me.
>>8427054
>3.5mm male-male wire
clean the contacts, alcohol helps
use different cable to compare
>>8427054
Simple, long wire acts as an antenna and picks up the transmissions. You have a shitty power amp, senpai as this should not normally occur.
I guess the wire acts like an antennae. It is a bit over 1m. Its long enough to pick up plenty of radio channels.
Could this be from a magnetic field interference produced by the speakers or amp?
So do we live in a simulation /sci/?
We don't. Stop watching science fiction.
>>8426982
prove it
>>8427020
If it really all were a simulation, those who died would come back in some form or the other
Inb4 they just get deleted and don't come back but you will
Given that condition then it's at the very least not a simulation for everyone else.
Therefore there exists an entity whereby this world is not a simulation.
