Why are these fucking dumbasses trying so hard to sell themselves? Literally told people in the face I'm a smartass fucker you can't compare. Do you think terence tao will say this kind of dumb shit? NO, because you are ridiculous clown, fucktard.

>that trick at the end
Literally wtf. Is he retarded?

I was gonna ask why it worked but then I while writing the post it became obvious :[

If you're so smart why don't you do it?
What are the best resources to learn calculus, statistics & linear algebra & basic proofs? Assuming no background in those areas?
>>8469981
Kahn Academy
>>8469981
Bumping since I want to know too. I want to learn maths although I'm working in a good job that doesn't require it. I just want to learn.
>>8469984
Thanks. I tried to learn statistics before learning calculus and hit a roadblock whenever statistics got into calculus problems.
To structure my learning can I learn Linear Algebra and Calculus together, or should I learn Calculus and then Linear Algebra & Statistics?
Due to your suggestion I just started the Calculus sequence on Kahn Academy. Been wanting to learn this so badly I'm going to marathon study today now that I have an actual resource. Thank you so much!

He is a big guy.
he plays the xylophone
isnt he the batman villain?
You should be able to solve this.
>>8469764
You wouldn't ask me to prove a statement that isn't true. Therefore it is true. QED.
>>8469769
let R=1 be radius of major circle
diagonal of inscribed square is twice as big: d=2
a side of a square is diameter over sqrt(2): a=2/sqrt(2)
let r be radius of minor square, which is equal to side divided by two: r=1/sqrt(2)
S=pi*R^2=pi
s=pi*r^2=pi/2
since semicircles are equal
s=S/2
Q.E.D.

Thanks for posting. Geometrical puzzles are fun.
I wish more would get posted.
This is the objective true nature of existence distilled to be understood.

big bang is becoming a meme. not even a joke.
Why is it impossible for /sci/ to explain pic related?
>>8469505
>pic related
>pic
It's impossible because you didn't post a picture.
>>8469512
>hur i maek joke
>>8469505
it aint tho
it's called pheremones
where do i start?
>>8469483
start by deleting the higher infinite - large cardinals because the biggest number is 10^200
>>8469483
Probably one of the calc books
>>8469484
haha! that doesn't even make sense! i can write n such that n>10^200 eg. 10^200+0.00000...1 is already bigger.
What's objectively the best base for a numeral system? Is there a general rule for it, like the less the better? What is the influence of the base of the numeral system on a civilization? What are some interesting numeral systems, and their influence on the society that used them?
For ease of computation, base 2 works best. That's why nearly every digital computer uses it.
For niftyness, base ten is pretty dope.
For those who subscribe to contrarianism, i would recomend base 0.
>>8468803
Personally I think the Arabic systems is quite nice, mostly because it integrates well with everything else we do. The meaning of 9(2) is immediately distinguishable from 92.
The Chinese pronounce numbers interestingly. Ten is Shi, one is Yi, eleven is Shiyi. Then new words come up for each new place. So there's a word for 10, 100, 1000, 10000, etc.

tl;dr: base 3
Is there any reason to pursue a career in academia? Why not just cash out by working for big oil, consultant or bank, for example? I get that its "noble" to pursue science just as a virtue, but is the trade off worth it?
>>8466683
interest
Why do Americans think about money all the time?
>>8466683
Some people like doing theoretic work and academia is their best shot at getting paid for it.
does trump winning mean more money for space?
for nasa?
for spacex?
>>8464578
He's dumb and bragadoshious to spend money on a worthless project like that
So sure
He probably will
>>8464578
If his tax plans go through americas federal budget will tank
So there will very likely be spending cuts to science
>>8464587
>likely be spending cuts to science
can spacex likely survive without nasa aid?
if america drops the ball, who will lead into space? china or russia?
Show me how smart you are?
17?
>>8469996
Is that your final answer?
>>8469993

isnt the greatest mathematician of all time that indian guy with lots of unpublished and lost papers?
raj something?
>>8468319
Von Neumann was actually better
Is it an actual field of study, or merely philosophy in a cloak scientific jargon?
It used to be a respectable field. Now it's a meme degree for popsci fedoras who want to be Dick Dockins.
It's a fucking mess now that genetical analysis has usurped physiology/anatomy in terms of species relation, but it's still applicable. We're still sorting out phylogenetic trees based on this shift but there are still many uses for evolutionary bio
>>8466963
this is complete BS
Also, where the fuck can you even find degrees solely on evolutionary biology? Is this a US thing?
I'm a CS student. In the beginning of the course, there wasn't much math, some teacher said that in practice they don't use math at all. Some said that in some specific areas like AI, more math was used. Great, I wanted to study AI anyway. So finally I began to study AI and was one of the biggest disappointments in my life. Some fields like metaheuristics have no cohesive theory at all. Worst: I almost don't see people putting effort to find one. No elegant universal analysis or mechanism. Very little math used. Most publications are in the style of "I tried to change the parameters of this algorithm to this to see if it works better in some random instances of this problem".
But I believe that CS is important. In particular, I believe that AI is important.
You guys adore to mock CS. Fine enough. But can you suggest what math would be necessary to study CS and AI "seriously"?
I'm asking this probably because of how much I'm disappointed with my field, but still, the question is serious.
I would specially welcome answers from mathematicians that turned to the field of AI.
Most of the more relevant theorems and theories and algorithms that I saw in CS and AI were actually made by mathematicians and physicists, now I’m not surprised.
>>8468941
I'm assuming you're going to take the same sequence of calculus, multivariable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra that every physical sciences and engineering student takes at decent schools.
Discrete math is likely the best place for you to start after this. Computational geometry would probably be useful too. Set theory, I believe, is also useful but I don't know how any of this relates to AI.
Keep in mind I did my degree in chemistry and don't know much about CS besides what my roommate told me, so take this with a grain of salt.
I thank you for your reply, but that's the standart curriculum, and doesn't seem to help much to improve the deph of understanding of AI. Well, not alone.
In an analogy, it's like we have a lot of methods to solve some equations. But no theory of abstract algebra.
Since this is the only thread about CS on /sci/:
Can someone explain to me how is AI, a fully logical mathematical system, even expected to happen when the logic behind the computer itself is flawed?
For an example, the Two's complement mechanic of the processors and the arbitrary way they're supposed to represent positive and negative values. They are not bound by mathematical logic but are rather abstract representations of bits (start with a "0" for positive and with a "1" for negative, when in reality no bit value can ever start with a zero since it is redundant, and such bit combinations do not exist in the real word).
How do you expect your hardware to work logically when at the literal lowest level you've used arbitrary abstraction that is only interpretable by humans? It's basically like saying "blue bits will now be negative, and red positive!". Or in other way, "it just werks so why bother change it lmao"
what one are you? :S
