Reading is so unfulfilling. I feel like I need to read shitloads of boring as fuck books or else I'm a pleb or pseudointellectuals will call me a pleb. I decided to read five extremely important books and then tell myself to forget this feeling forever. The books are the republic (read and liked), brothers Karamazov (read and disliked), war and peace (at about p60 and it's good), great expectations (40 % through and it's shit), and a tale of two cities (will probably be shit).

I hate this fucking feeling. I see fiction as entertainment, not some stupid fountain of "insights".

I should be spending my time doing practical stuff or learning stem stuff, not reading myself stupid. Everything feels like work.

To summarise, I simply don't have the balls to follow my own intuitions and tastes, even though I genuinely believe in them. And even after the five books it won't end. Dickens is boring shit but he has tonnes of boring books you'll be called a pleb for not reading. The Idiot is on my shelf and I will give it a fair shot but not have the balls to give up if it becomes boring.

2100 years ago, in his treatise "On the Nature of Things," Lucretius inferred the existence of atoms from Brownian Motion.

Verses 113–140 from Book II:
>"Observe what happens when sunbeams are admitted into a building and shed light on its shadowy places. You will see a multitude of tiny particles mingling in a multitude of ways... their dancing is an actual indication of underlying movements of matter that are hidden from our sight... It originates with the atoms which move of themselves [i.e., spontaneously]. Then those small compound bodies that are least removed from the impetus of the atoms are set in motion by the impact of their invisible blows and in turn cannon against slightly larger bodies. So the movement mounts up from the atoms and gradually emerges to the level of our senses, so that those bodies are in motion that we see in sunbeams, moved by blows that remain invisible."

I find this phenomenal. 60 BCE, atomic theory from Brownian motion.

It turns out that forces that scale inverse-square are not necessarily enough to stop expansion, even if space itself wasn't expanding.

What about crime? (statistics show that crime is higher on blacks than on whites for example)

The purpose of reality is to be real, as real as real can be.

Hi, I want to tell my problem,I hope you guys understand what I wrote:
More or less two months ago I couldn't sleep for like 3 or 4 consecutive days and with that I started to think crazy ideas like if I was high(VERY IMPORTANT) , like if my mom was crazy and the society too, that the hair has powers and more crazy stuff...
My mom took me to the neurologist and he gave me a prescription to Olanzapine (Zyprexa) to allow me sleep
I didn't want to take the medicine but my mom made me take it :/
Since I took it, i've been having troubles :( And I don't know if has anything to do with the medicine or NOT but...
My worst trouble is that I don't enjoy the music anymore!! I listen to it but I don't feel anything :( it makes me sad because I put music that I used to love and enjoy like crazy and now I feel nothing...! I hope any of you could give me an answer
My legs shake most of the time and that makes me anxious so I eat much trying to stop it but it doesn't work
My problems in summary:
1) I don't feel the music
2) my legs shake (anxious problem)
3) I eat much ( can't controll it )
4) and I had (not now) crazy ideas (like I said, like if I was high on something)
who do you think could help me? the neurologist, a psychiatrist?
any idea why I don't enjoy the music, the crazy thoughts, the shaking legs?
THANKS ANYONE WHO TRIES TO HELP ME

For me, "time" is the term regarding the concept of continuous change, caused by consequential actions

Specifically hard work, determination, and grit are not distinct from talent, but they are a component of it. This is a bit weird to see but think about it.
Everyone is required to work within the same 24 hours. So you may be "smarter" than someone but yet be less talented than they are.
Because their ability to be in the lab at 6 am every day grinding instead of hitting the snooze button 6 times is a talent. Sure you can tell yourself you could do it if you wanted to, but that's just an excuse, isn't it?

Another one of these episodes. I was going to write more but you're not worth it.
>>
>>9132453
The thing is, today's world, people value hardwork more than intellect. People in the industry want people who turns up on time, does their work diligently and generally people who they can depend on. It doesn't mean shit if you can process things faster if you keep turning up late for work, don't give me quality work and keep taking leaves and excuses for not doing your shit. I rather take someone who has responsibility rather than intellect, it doesn't matter if you're slightly slower, I can train you.

A 3.8 GPA grinder > 3.8 GPA slacker in my opinion. I don't give a shit if you went to Harvard if you don't do well enough to help our company raise our profit margins, I'll sure as hell kick you out and go as far as getting a dude from Rutgers that can.

What would a more scientific view of political leanings look like? A three dimensional space? A network of sorts? There is a genetic component to clustering into right or left but I see little to assume the left and right actually exist in reality.

>What would a more scientific view of political leanings look like?
invisible, since politics isn't scientific
>>
>>9132335
If it was a fully social construct I would agree, but since it has a genetic components we should be able to make something more scientific. There's research on threat bias, taste, personality, body type, social-economic status, attractiveness that claim these traits make you more likely to support certain policies or end up on one of the political leanings.

I don't understand the American college system. I often read about people doing undergraduate studies in a field like physics and moving on a completely unrelated doctoral program in medicine or law. Am I missing something here or is this really possible.

what the fuck are you talking about? there is no other living organism besides us that goes beyond just being a physical system that happens to be organic as well. we have gone beyond being an organic system and can actually be aware of not ourselves, but our surroundings, their awareness, and what rules they follow. try and grasp what it would take for that. we've refined precision for building clubs to make gatling guns, making wooden rafts to nuclear warships, collecting stones and grunting to defining infinite series. you can't possibly begin to grasp what the fuck went down for us to get where we are. being sapient is an understatement. we're living gods compared to every other entity in the universe, and one day we'll be gone and nothing else will be around to fill the seat. we're like the crest of a wave that will die down to a flat plane, a single defining moment that there was something more in this void than just the sum of its parts.

What determines if a EM wave can go through a wall?
First thought it was about energy, but low energy radio waves can do it, light can't and then x-rays can do it again.
