Could a civilization with a sufficient level of technology unbake a cake and extract it back into its original ingredients?

If yes would it be able to unbeat the egg back into a yolk?

Hardmode: You can not use nanotechnology to simple rearrange the atoms of the cake into its ingredients. You have to literally undo the reactions and changes that occurred during heating and mixing

Someone will try to explain it to you, but basically your question is wrong. Like a child asking "how much can Santa lift if he was real?". Well here's no answer Timmy because that's not how things are.

theres some shit on youtube though where you can mix and unmix some oil shit in water. thats kinda cool. probably the closest you can get to what you want to see.

Im taking linear algebra soon but I have a choice of taking the mathematical aspect course or the matlab applications aspect course. I'm currently enrolled in the more math heavy course but I'm recommended to switch because I'm in engineering. However, if Matlab is totally worthless I'll stay where I am.

Is Matlab worthless or worth my time to switch?

If you plan on going into research then matlab is almost essential.

How would we know, it depends entirely on what you like and want. MATLAB is without doubt a useful and complete software package for simulations and all kinds of numerical calculations. It's fast, it's mature and it's very efficient. Looking at some ends of it, there is really no alternative that comes close.

But all that depends on where you want to go and what you are interested in, we can't know that.

Can you recommend some excellent mathematics books for expanding my knowledge? I have heard from different sources that authors such as Stewart have some of the best books, but I honestly don't know where to start and am lost. I have very little experience with trigonometry and little to none with calculus and absolutely none in further fields, and I want to fix this.

Any help and recommendations are greatly welcomed and appreciated!

So this August I decided to voluntarily receive electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). This is basically the process of using high voltage to induce artificial seizures in the brain as a way to alleviate depression and other mental disorders. As I had read some articles prior to undergoing this therapy, it is usually considered highly effective for depression with a few side effects involving memory problems and confusion for a few days following the final treatment. Well fuck was I wrong. Now I just think about killing myself every day after realizing that my life was not so bad after all.

Even though I was on an effective combo of drugs for a few years now, it was earlier this year that I first considered ECT because I noticed my depressive symptoms and obsessive-compulsive behaviors get more intense. I managed to sign the forms for the procedure in May and finally had six treatments in August. I came out half as sharp as I used to be. It was horrible at first, I could hardly speak properly, couldn't remember basic shit, and had awful processing speed. I had to stay home this entire semester which was supposed to be my most important one for entering pharmacy school. Now three months later I'm not much better. My working memory is bad, I can't think of coherent thoughts in my head for conversations, it's difficult for me to drive a car now that my attention and processing speed are shit, hand writing has gotten worse, typing is slow and difficult, developed more useless compulsive behaviors, don't have the motivation to do even simple stuff like cooking a meal from scratch, and it takes me like three times longer to solve problems or equations I used to do. I don't want to live being this slow. I took me an hour to type this out and it still doesn't probably describe things the way I used to.

The drugs don't work as well as they used to and not I'm just crippled. Any ideas or should I just kill myself?

I'm not a doctor, nor am I really versed in ECT, but from simple logic I assume that it's a really bad idea. I don't see how damaging neural tissue can help anything and I would suggest giving yourself a good amount of time to recuperate and not push yourself. The first bad thing you did when asserting the ways to treat your depression was taking ADs, that shit really does not work long time and you should quit it as soon as possible, most of the time it makes things worst, disrupting the chemical balance in the brain.

Best wishes

I'm in Canada if it makes any difference. Since failing the treatment docs don't want to work with me anymore and stop prescribing me my best drugs. Stimulants, nootropics, and exercise make some difference, but not nearly enough to make me who I used to be.

It seems common sense that applying a current across the head would cause damage but the scientific papers convinced me otherwise in the fact that the "structural changes" were positive. Fuck all I want to do is go back to university and live miserably but functionally like I did half a year go. Is this what brain damage feels like?

He's really right, but /sci/ has a big ego of muh maths/physics major

But you know that this website likes memes a lot so you will always see "hate" to engineers despite most of /sci/ are a bunch of engineers disguised as undergrad math/physics/chemistry

But eh, hit me hard /sci/ i know most of you are just weeb engineers that want to meme on here and if there are math/physics majors, there's 95% chance that these guys are going to get their masters/phd soon

Also i hope this thread is kept civilized and no shitstorm will happen

But that hate about CC is kind of exaggerated a bit as well, since with CC you could transfer to some university and get a nice job, etc.
Maybe he mean't getting a degree in a CC or something?

Not from CC but i would give some of STEM CC transfers a chance here
>>
>>8495435
ccs sell shitty meme two year "electrical engineering technologist" degrees as paths to $80/hr union jobs at local utility companies and when this doesn't come to fruition none of the non liberal arts credits transfer to a proper engineering program

helo it is retord anon with retord question

So I know momentum is transferred in collisions. p = mv, K = (1/2)mv^2, therefore K = (1/2)pv, right? So transfer of momentum, elastic or otherwise, from body A to body B, results in a change of kinetic energy. A has done work on B.

Work is the integral of force with respect to distance. Yet during a collision, force is applied more or less instantaneously. It doesn't seem like A would be able to cover enough distance while in contact with B to account for the work done.

I'm confuse.
19 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8506632
instantaneousness doesnt exist
>>
>>8506638
I know. Planck units and all that. That's why I said *more or less* instantaneously. My question still stands: the distance covered during the moment of contact does not intuitively seem sufficient to account for the work done
>>
>>8506632
Well first of all, in elastic collisions there actually is no change in kinetic energy, and so there is no work done. Work is only done in inelastic collisions, for example when the two particles stick after colliding. Since the particles stick together after colliding, this give sufficient distance for force to be applied and for work to be done.

Please help a retard understand how to solve this equation;

5ln(x^2)=4ln(x^3)+6

I know the result but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to get there.
13 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
5ln(x^2)=4ln(x^3)+6
ln(x^10)=ln(x^12)+6
ln(x^12)-ln(x^10)=-6
ln(x^2)=-6
x^2=e^(-6)
x=1/e^3 or =-1/e^3,denied since x has to be greater than 0
so x=1/e^3
>>
>>8506498
Thanks man, don't why I didn't think about inserting 4 and 5 into the parentheses.
>>
>>8506506
Or you could take the exponents out of the parentheses
5ln(x^2)=4ln(x^3)+6
10ln(x)=12ln(x)+6
-2ln(x)=6
ln(x)=-3
x=e^-3

What factors go into choosing what thrusters to use on a spacecraft, specifically cargo?

Kerosene is used when you need high volume energy density (first stages). Liquid hydrogen is used when you need high mass energy density (upper stages). Hypergolic propellants like hydrazine-N2O4 are used when you need to start and stop the engine a lot (spacecraft engines and reaction control thrusters)
>>
>>8504648
Reliability/simplicity, handling characteristics, density, specific impulse

Read up on:
hydrazine monopropellant with catalytic activation - low performance but very simple, reliable engine, used in orbital systems. Hydrazine is very toxic and therefore unpleasant to handle. Various less-toxic replacements are under development, but spacecraft designers are conservative and hydrazine works.
hydrazine resistojet (or other electric heating) - higher performance than catalytic decomposition, but high electrical power requirement. Similar applications.
xenon ion thruster - very high specific impulse, low thrust, requires electrical power, careful planning, and patience since it takes a long time to change the orbit.

space-storable hypergolic combinations (such as UDMH/MMH/Aerozine-50 with dinitrogen tetroxide or MON) - simple, reliable engine, used in high-performance orbital systems and some launch systems. Very toxic.

kerosene/oxygen - standard high-density combination for launch vehicles, not easy to store in space (for one thing, the oxygen will freeze the kerosene)
hydrogen/oxygen - standard high-spacific-impulse, but unfortunately low-density (hence, requiring larger tanks) combination for launch vehicles, very difficult to store in space because hydrogen boils at such a low temperature
methane/oxygen - fancy new medium-density combination for launch vehicles, somewhat easier to store in space because the methane and oxygen are liquid at the same temperature, although maintaining cryogenic temperatures in space is somewhat challenging

rubber and rubber with ammonium perchlorate - standard solid rocket propellant for strap-on boosters and solid-fuel upper stages, good way to get lots of thrust, but environmentally unfriendly can explode

nitrogen cold-gas thruster - just compressed nitrogen in a can. Low performance, but cheap and simple. Sees some use in things like settling and attitude thrusters (ex. on the Falcon 9 reusable booster).

Travel to France

All genetics majors or people simply interested are invited. Food for thought: If humans differ by Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms and these occur at a much greater frequency than random mutations, how many possible SNP combinations are there for humans in general?
16 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>8503728
There are as many "possible" SNPs as there are bases within the 'standard' human genome x4. Good luck figuring out the possible viable SNP combinations, mate.

Also, why does /sci/ hate genetics? I get the hate for biology, what with all the bullshit "field" scientists, but genetics, epigenetics, etc. certainly are much more legitimate?
>>
>>8503798
I don't agree with this, there are nucleotides which cannot change, especially those which confer to the active sites of essential proteins such as ribosomal subunits (I know nonsense mutations, but certain enzymes have a higher affinity to only a certain codon variant of an amino acid)

So if I had to guess it would be the genome minus a few thousand bases
>>
>>8503927
Hence why I mentioned the viable SNPs. If we're talking purely theoretical, any point is a possible SNP.

Does caffeine fry your brain longterm ? Im 22 and been taking cafffeine from different sources from 17 yo. I started with low doses and my tolerance sometimes when incredibelly high wich also gave me insomnia and shiity sleep. I also feel depressed when the comedown hits after a huge pot of cofee especialy if i take it preworkout wich also releases natural endorphins and adrenaline. Ive been doing this shit for 5 years and i feel like im not the guy i used to be mentally. Anyone in this boat?

I loved caffeine prewrokout because i could lift more , i got better pumps and very good focus , also the feeling good brain hormonoes cocktalis kept me hooked. My plan is to quit caffeine but i just feel like ultimate shit and im not able to function at all without it and its a very stresfull period in my life atm ( exams and job interviews)
