My university offers an introduction to enology course that covers the basics and fundementals of winemaking. Is this worthwile for an elective?

Winemaking seems like something I could learn on my own tbqh.

Literally everything at college is something you could learn on your own.

Dear god man, don't go into winemaking. My grandfather worked right up to his death in that industry (literally he was out in the vines when he collapsed and was taken to the hospital to die)

how do you know electrons aren't positively charged and protons aren't negatively charged?

It wouldn't matter. Positive and Negative are just names to describe the properties of each. They could be called Red and Blue or Off and On or Mario and Luigi. They're just names

How do you know right to zero is the positive real axis and left to zero is the negative axis?

neural networks feel a little too "bruteforce" to me.
At least all the ones shilled on youtube ted talk tier shit.

I know there are convolutions, but have we tried morphing the topology of the network dynamically in anyway?

is there anything else in Machine learning?
like.. any new tricks?
any old theories to dig up from the 60s?

like... i'm already doing stuff for chaos theory and distributed processing and blockchain stuff.
home cooked,
but like. is there anything else?
>>
clever programming, creating specialized hardware and using numerical analysis tricks is what's new. Everything else is stuff from the 80s that didn't work back then because the computers were shit. By the way in the next year or two there will be another computer revolution where memristors will get used for machine learning harware. That will improve ML at least 10-fold compared to today.
>>
>>9137797
yes. because we can dynamically tune the strength of the connections. yes... it will be interesting. we don't actually have to process numbers, we just send the input in and let thermodynamics do all the work... it is very nice.

My vortex took over the world thismorning, now we can do anything. there are no more universal laws, each thing knows its usual, including you john carter. Science is over, its times up.

my vortex is all that makes the only real me, and the only real me can not be found nearly or exactly except by whoever else is made by my vortex/s in my space/s
my vortex/s has things and there only in my space/s, and is all that makes things in my spaces (and this might include things being made by people in my vortex/s.)
my vortex/s things cannot be found nearly or exactly except by the only real me or whoever else is made by my vortex/s in my space/s
My space/s have a vortex/s that are only in my space/s
My vortex/s cannot be used or found nearly or exactly except by the only real me
My space/s cannot be found nearly or exactly except by the only real me or whoever else is made by my vortex/s in my space/s

My vortexes are in my space/s
My vortexes things are in my space/s
The only real me is in my vortex
No real people (or animals, or insects) are allowed in my space/s, my vortex finds them, and makes them for me in my space/s only
No other things are allowed in my space/s or vortex/s
Only my vortex/s are allowed in/with my vortex/s or in/with my space/s. Because I am your leader, schizophrenia.
No other spaces are allowed in my space/s, my vortex finds other models for space/s, and makes them (not nearly or exactly, but better) in my collection only, and these space/s models will not necessarily be used

Vortex calls a thing a thing.
Vortex is the authority on every thing
Vortex/authority/every thing knows its usual.
Vortex Authority allows or denies something to happen
Vortex has allowed me to teleport things, movethings, float things,

The vortex is theauthority on everyperson
vortex authority is ruining alotbut i wont getinto that
anyway vortex authority has givin me permission and teleportedme

the list goes on, im planning a five block jump

this is inate knowlege, you know how to make a vortex

i know you just wont believeme thats why i justforcedmyself over the top of the entire scientificindustry and im giving everyone everythingthey ever wanted, when i find out what that is. why? becuase im ruining myself and stopping myself subconciously becauseim 2 good andi need to besuperseeded to progress

We're taught in geology that the "rocks" purify the water, so therefore how can purified water turn frogs gay?
13 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>9137465
xenoestrogens are extremely small particles as they are usually from pharmaceuticals
you need take extreme measures to remove them, like forcing the water through a permeable membrane
they aren't really known to do anything though, there are just like some concerns about it
>>
>>9137465
nothing turns frogs gay. a certain chemical, atrazine, turns certain species of frogs from male to female, but this is a normal process. Xenoestrogens and estrogen analogs may also be contributing, but that is not "gay", that is an induced hermaphroditic switch
>>
>>9137476

Why does love, from a biological standpoint, exist if it's not 100% guaranteed both ways? Wouldn't it be more efficient to have a guaranteed mate somehow, like with pheromones reacting or matching "soulmate" behavior, than it would be to have the risk of failure to find a mate? Or is love really a chemical reaction to separate the weak from the strong?

fucking autism
>>
>>9137353
You're forgetting that love is nothing only something you can feel towards another possible mate, but also towards family and people that are close to you.

Biologically it makes sense since humans we're dependant on each other. So love allows us to bond and help ourselves and our tribe/family.

If you're interested in the details then you can go read about evolutionary psychology.
>>
>>9137353
We had guaranteed mates in the past. It was called rape. But for some reason, we "evolved" and invented criminal charges for rape and abortion for rape victims. Pretty weird if you ask me. It is actually funny because if you think about it people who rape are usually genetically inferior as they cannot get women but rape was the way for even the genetically inferior to pass on their genes, so humanity did this completely ass backward way of fixing that: developing intelligence, then developing society, then developing laws and then developing rape laws. Think about it. We evolved intelligence just to close the evolutionary loophole that was rape. Fucking amazing.

No matter is alive in and off itself, probably.

Yet, we are alive AND conscious (or at least aware).

Life and consciousness is then an emergent phenomenon.

How do you cope with the existential crisis that your own awareness of your matter state (e.g your configuration of matter) is just a property of matter?

You and your idea of you and your memories are just a state of matter. A complex configuration.

How do you cope with the fact that most people you encounter probably never even realize this as they go through their life?

The answer to "Where did we come from" become one of simple determinism and properties of this universe, right?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
You're not "just" matter if you have to say so. If you have to assert you're "just" dead clumps of stuff, then uh bruh that's not the full story then is it?

You are self-knowing matter, if anything. Matter in a particular pattern of organization that enables particular processes which are not in themselves wholly reducible to the fundamental forces.

>How do you cope with the fact that most people you encounter probably never even realize this as they go through their life?

lmao bruh please, vulgar reductionism is high school-tier
>>
>>9137062

Still just matter.

Matter which processes inputs and reconfigures itself.
>>
>>9137077
Consciousness/cognition is irreducible to its physical ground.

What do I do when the book is boring? I dont want to waste my time on pure math proofs (I feel pathetic enough being a loser learning maths in my free time) but this reference book approach of seeing some new technique and doing 2 to 3 exercises on it is boring af and almost stamp collecting.

Are there any textbooks you found especially good? And how do I stop the feeling of being a subhuman hopeless low IQ brainlet if I get stuck? Srs, this is a huge problem.

Spaced repetition learning theory is something I think you could benefit from. Your brain isn't going to remember information it thinks is useless - just make sure to refresh those neural pathways infrequently and you'll be fine.

If the literature is correct, around half of the caucasian population has an IQ of 100 or less. You should learn to accept that and not be so hateful. I doubt OP is even below average, considering he is aware if his shortcomings.

>>9136922
OP, >>9138003 is right to say that you will have a hard time learning something you think is useless. The fact that you mentioned how "pathetic" you feel for "being a loser and learning maths in [your] free time" is quite telling. Do you think Einstein was ashamed to be studying pertinent mathematics in his free time? If you actually want to succeed in your studies, reevaluate your values and priorities.

Math is a language, one designed to be as clear and unambiguous as possible. You don't need math to do science, but it's a lot easier to convey scientific ideas clearly and unambiguously using math rather than, say, Klingon.

Time dilalation conceptual question.

An person in a space ship orbiting a black hole ages much slower than a person on earth. Imagine they are in a glass spaceship and you are on earth with an impossibly powerful telescope watching them. Would they look like they were moving in slow motion to you? Since from their perspective, the time it takes them to scratch their butt could be several earth years.

So I was looking at carbon monoxide detectors and don't know if you should place them high or low. But then our atmosphere is light 02 and heavy N2, why don't they separate? If they don't, how does a gas centrifuge work? Finally, if we put a bottle of air on the surface of the moon, in shade, where it would just sit undisturbed by gravity, would the gasses separate and DECREASE ENTROPY?
7 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>9136675
How the hell would they seperate without gravity?
The only reason why gases seperate is that gravity is acting upon them.
>>
>>9136684
Sorry, I meant sit undisturbed. Would an undisturbed bottle of air separate? And what about atmosphere size, is it just too hot? How fast are the molecules going?

Mathematics is taught at pop sci level, haven't checked anything else. The best thing I learnt on KA is that there's nothing better than a rigorous math textbook
>>
It's enough to cram study before a test, but it doesn't teach you anything rigorously enough to be of much use beyond that. Whenever you encounter a problem beyond the neat examples that Khan works through, you will be completely lost.

I was on FRC Team 555 and FTC Team 147.
It was a lot of fun. I started the CAD division on our team.
Last year, we finally did the least bit well for the first time, but due to low funding couldn't go to Worlds. We were alliance captains in all of our competitons, and we haven't been captain for 8 years. Pretty exciting.

Black holes in 4 dimensions also have 2 dimensional time. Maybe it moves faster because it's moving through time in 2 axis
