Beating yourself up over making progress makes no sense. Be happy you were able to do it in the end. Dumb frogposter.

This is hardly right. If this demotivates you, slow it down. Actually the effort you made so the theorem really made you think, will actually help you understand better later topics actually.

Is there a downside to using volcanoes as an energy source?
>>8539718
The locals don't let you do it because of "muh property/life"
>>8539718
Yes, because a pound of lava weighs twice as much when it cools.
Conditions are pretty extreme, and tools often break down because of that. Also, there's issues in finding magma wells, and in the danger that comes with it; it's possible to drill into a high pressure steam zone and can cause even more problems.

Will we ever figure out how to stop the universe from ending? Or do we already know for a fact that this will never be possible?

Vaccum energy ambient field generators.
Reversing entropy
Leave it to Musk to figure out.

And this wasn't the only case of this happening. Typos like this happen in multiple parts of the book. How does a book with this many fuckups get past the publication process?
In /sci/s experience, what is the textbook with the most amount of typos?
This is the textbook I was using
Write a letter to the publishers listing all the typos you found.
Hopefully they can correct them in the next edition
Does anybody want to give me a hint on problem 3?
H(R) is the set of all non-empty compact subsets of the reals (i.e. closed and bounded).
To show that the function is continuous I'm trying to use the fact that it would be equivalent to showing the pre-image of a closed subset of H(R) is closed in [0,1].
However, I don't know how to execute this.
what is the topology on H?
>>8539377
I guess it's the usual topology on R where open sets are open intervals with the Euclidean metric.
>>8539424
? how so? Isn't H a collection of compact sets?
What is the universe and where did it come from?
Please answer succinctly.
Totality of known physical phenomena
It always existed in some form.

Everything.

Post math/math culture that pisses you off:
>overusing the adjective "Galois"
>naming literally EVERYTHING that involves a symmetry group "the (adjective/additional structure)-Galois group of (Object)"
Galois covering space? Differential Galois theory? Fuck you, not everything that involves an automorphism group needs to have his name on it
Pic related, it's a mathematician that is 10 times as significant as Galois that we never hear about

What are my chances to work with space exploration in some way?
I'm currently studying physics as an undergrad and want to eventually work with space exploration because that's my big interest. I would say I'm pretty intelligent and I learn very fast.
What are my chances?
Propulsion engineering or any other type of engineering, astrodynamics, astrophysics, anything related.

do you go to a top school? then you'll have no trouble getting at least some sort of job at spacex

I go to the top physics school in my European country. A good portion of the professors are CERN physicists.
I have no idea how it compares to American top schools.
I have untreated ADHD, was diagnosed at age 6 and recently I've had it confirmed again. Should I start taking Adderall?
>free adderall
lucky cunt
>>8538759
so I should take it?
>>8538763
I was diagnosed at 14 and currently "take" (I really don't take it regularly despite the fact that it helps a shit load) 30mg vyvanse. It works pretty well, and when I do take it I don't feel that different and any difference I do feel is positive.
I would talk to your doctor though about what you should take as different medicines affect people in different ways, it'll be some trial and error to find something that works for you.
Keep in mind though ADHD medicine isn't a miracle focus drug, that's a meme. What it will do is give you the ability to focus, it won't make you focus.
Why is learning a musical instrument or getting good at sports much easier than studying hard to become a genius? I thought repetition increases perfection but for some reason this does not apply to intellectual matters unless one is just trying to pass exams. Why?
>>8538563
because learning a musical instrument or getting good at a sport isnt the same as becoming a genius or master at a sport or instrument?
>>8538563
>wah the intelligence increase capacity fenomena isn't actually real
It is. But brainlets who spend hours a day watching TV, pitying themselves and eating degenerate food are doomed to be unsuccessful for the rest of their lives.

when i saw the blackhole tearing a supernova billions of times stronger than the sun apart i realized how much life is pointless. Then there is hercules borealis which is billions of light years kilometers across.
Life is probably an event that is unlikely to happen, but the sheer fact we cannot even hope to evolve to a level of comprehending the universe or surviving its tricks is somewhat affirming.
Oh by the way, what you use your intelligence for is your business.
I want to read some bullshit articles, I would love if /sci/ could help me.

Is there a reason the decimals of 1/49 resembles a 2^x sequence?
>>8538402
because you're missing 2 from 100
>>8538403
What does he mean by this?
>>8538402
Yes. 0.02*49=0.98. 0.0004*49=0.0196. Keep doing this and slowly you build the decimal. Of course it repeats, so at some point your period of two digits will multiply out to just 9's, so not every set of two digits is a power of two.
