Why do smart people wear glasses
why do tards like you have to wear helmets?
I remember at a really young age having random thoughts like "what would life be like if I were never born". Do you think this is the beginning of consciousness? Anyone have similar experiences?
Hard to say, consciousness is such a weird topic and I feel like everyones definition of it is somewhat different because of personal experiences but I remember thinking for the first time about all the time that has passed before I was actually born and was able to have a memory of things. Crazy to think

Yeah I thought about things like this at quite a young age as well. In preschool/kindergarten and early elementary school I'd watch science documentaries on synesthesia and the mind and things like this and my parents were never interested in my autistic ramblings about them afterwords.
Sometimes I feel like when I learn new things I've always known them but have only acquired the words to describe them, when it comes to philosophy.

General cognitive function is a prominent human trait associated with many important life outcomes including longevity. The substantial heritability of general cognitive function is known to be polygenic, but it has had little explication in terms of the contributing genetic variants. Here, we combined cognitive and genetic data from the CHARGE and COGENT consortia, and UK Biobank (total N=280,360). We found 9,714 genome-wide significant SNPs (P<5 x 10-8) in 99 independent loci. Most showed clear evidence of functional importance. Among many novel genes associated with general cognitive function were SGCZ, ATXN1, MAPT, AUTS2, and P2RY6. Within the novel genetic loci were variants associated with neurodegenerative disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, physical and psychiatric illnesses, brain structure, and BMI. Gene-based analyses found 536 genes significantly associated with general cognitive function; many were highly expressed in the brain, and associated with neurogenesis and dendrite gene sets. Genetic association results predicted up to 4% of general cognitive function variance in independent samples.
Exponential discovery continues.

Hey /sci/,
Can you guess every functions to make this figure?

The corcles are easy. The parabolas are just hard because I forgot how to write them with a set range sonit doesn't go on til infinity.

Those are half-ellipses
I was really looking forward to this thing. People would think its a ufo or idk whatever it was supposed to outshine Venus and the ISS.
I think it still inspired some of us to keep trying to put Artificial Satellites into orbit for low cost $10,000-$30,000 as part of other packages on a Russian Rocket (maybe soon space x?)
But since it didn't like super shine or anything then we probably inspired less people :(

Its pretty cool still you can look at the plans in a online interactive 3D display on the official site but its all in Russian.

We really should stop sending shit up that doesn't serve a vital purpose.
How does one go about photographing a solar eclipse?
I've seen videos and articles where people tried to do that, and melted their camera sensors. But they were all doing long exposures, and I haven't seen any for short exposures.
I have a D-SLR (D3100), and have taken photos of the sun before. But with the aperture and shutter speeds maxed out (minimised for the ISO). I also have an FDR-AX100/b, and I really cannot imagine doing damage to for pointing it at the sun with it set to similar settings. But the science doesn't seem to support me on this one.
you use either a very dark nd filter, or stack several of them, or you do the projection technique, where you use a telescope or binoculars, and project the image of the sun through the ocular onto a white surface, where you can photograph the sun from.
and most importantly, even with a very dark nd filter, never look through the viewfinder, only use live view through the tft screen. there are special solar filters for this kind of photography as well which filter out all the invisible crap like uv and the ir spectrum, but these cost around $1200.
look for a 10-14 stop nd filter, or stack 2 weaker ones to get 10 stops or more. you have to experiment with your exposure time, since a big stopper like a 10 is quite dark. and you cant spend to much time exposing since the event doesnt take that long
What do /sci/ think on mindfulness meditation vs doing something more productive in overall benefits ex) cognitive enhancement. Which is more beneficial?

Any European that would give becoming an astronaut a shot, if ESA (European Space Agency) had a new Astronaut Selection Campaign?
There have been 3 campaigns so far:
1978-1979
1991- 1992 and
2008 - 2009.
It is uncertain when the next campaign will be. I know I would give it a shot. Always wanted to go to space.
Anyone has something to share on this topic? Like anyone knows when we could expect a new round? Any other ways for an European to become an astronaut? And what is the process for an American?
The 2008 Selection Process:
"
1. Initial selection according to basic criteria;
2. Psychological tests for selected candidates;
3. Second round of psychological tests and interviews;
4. Medical tests;
5. Job interview.
The final list of applicants will be submitted to the Director General of the European Space Agency for recruitment.

Go to the gym, educate yourself on maintaining scientific equipment, go to the gym even more, cardio like a marathon runner, and do some more gym and learning
Astronauts need to be as healthy as they can be, because all the nasty shit zero g does to the body will make any ailments so much worse
if you are unable to get in despite doing all of the above, worry not, because by the time they do another recruitment run after the next one, there will be dozens of private space industry companies looking for employees to send up to the stars, space mining ones in particular, like Deep space industries and planetary resources, being the first ones recruiting
Keep your chin up lad, If this is what you want to do, in your heart of hearts, you can and will make it happen, just harness that fire in your blood to see it through
I believe in you anon, you will be a glorious space man
Why doesn't the government build massive communes in the woods for unemployed computer science majors and get them to code AI or programs for the military in exchange for room and board? Why do our nation's leaders lack vision?

If you compressed the (carbon) matter of an average human into a synthetic diamond, how big would that diamond be? Even if it was only a very small one, I think that's how I'd like to be "memorialized", like being a literal blood-diamond without the, you know, slavery connotations.
carbon = 18.5% of your mass
your weight is 100 kilos you fat fuck
diamonds are 3.51 grams/cm3
so about 5271 cm3 or 26355 carats
there is already at least one service that does this, but they just add your impurities to their own carbon, so you color the diamond
>>9116788
Nice eights, maybe I'm underestimating the amount of carbon that would be in a diamond, it overestimating the weight of a carat.
Can the internet itself run out of storage space?
>>9138071
If the internet were static, yes, but it's not, and new storage is being added constantly.
>>9138071
Yes it's 100% possible I think.
Anyone here know how to solve pic related using dimensional analysis? I suck at conversions.

I propose to you: quantum trap theory.
Since the discussion of "are traps gay" isn't going to end anytime soon we clearly need a solution. Both sides bring good arguments to the table and sometimes there can't be a winner.
I say: unless you fuck a trap you can't tell if it's gay or not.
WHOMST
>>9137948
if a boy fucks a trap girl would that count?
>>9137998
Only the boy who fucked the trap can say if it's gay or not, but only with that trap.
You're in a car going 100KPH and your destination is 100KM away, but every KM you travel, you slow down by 1KM, so at 99KM to go, you slow down to 99KPH and so on.
How long does it take to reach your destination?

about 5

That is [math]\sum_{i=1}^{100} 1/i[/math] hours. According to wolfram, that's [math]\frac{14466636279520351160221518043104131447711}{2788815009188499086581352357412492142272}[/math] hours, or about 5 hours, 11 minutes, and 14 seconds.
