Ok,this is fucking ridiculous

>Study three days for exam
>Know every page inside and out
>Read to shine
>They have me solve glorified arithmetic problems without the use of a calculator

My grade is fucked and all because fucking retards decided that Economics never must be tied to the use of a calculator.

No wonder my country is so shit, everything is all ideology and no essence.

How do scientists known what the center of the earth is?

>The distance to the center of the Earth is 6,371 kilometers (3,958 mi), the crust is 35 kilometers (21 mi) thick, the mantle is 2855km (1774 mi) thick — and get this: the deepest we have ever drilled is the Kola Superdeep Borehole, which is just 12km deep. In truth, we have almost no direct knowledge of anything beneath the crust

Geology student here. I had it explained to me by a professor this way:

There's what we tell the public
There's what we tell undergraduates
There's what we tell graduates
There's what professors learn
There's what researchers try to figure out
There is the truth

Guess where you are? There's a lot that's being obscured from you because it gets complicated but saying we know what the center of the Earth is is a lie. We have some ideas but anything below the crust is estimates, anything below the moho is guesswork

I have a typical high IQ job, I won't say more. I keep it down to weed, extremely infrequent mdma and caffeine. The go / start of caffeine is a good mental state to solve some of the problems in my work extremely quickly.

The downside is I'm a professional and therefore I wouldn't bring drugs to work.

If I'm obsessed it's because I could imagine an intellectual society would allow its workers to manipulate their mental states for productivity. If I'm upset it's because the reality is that stick butts are obsessed with banning things they believe they're better than.

>high IQ job
>I keep it down to weed

Weed in my experience makes me think less. It makes me happier in a sense but less considerate, less able to deal with complex thinking. Not "stupid" but in a sense I feel it does make me dumber. More simple minded, or focused in a broad sense.

Im still not convinved we actually know the earth is full of magma? Prove me wrong.

just dig a hole like 70metres deep. It'll get hot as fuck and you'll see lava.

Or fly to Hawaii and see some lava coming from the ground. Or find footage of any volcano.

Hey /sci/,

Serious question. If I haven't done any programming at all until the age of 21, but I start now, is there a possibility for me to become a world class programmer/computer scientist or not? I'm really dedicated and want to learn, but I'd like to know if it's even physically possible at this point.

Thanks(pic unrelated, answer is 5pi/2 tho)

>I'm really dedicated and want to learn
Well, shut up, leave, pick up those books, and get to work! You'll find out if its possible when you get there.
>>
>>8586866
I really don't want to put in all my life and literally find out it wasn't worth it since my brain can't learn it and doesn't have the power to do what people like Jacob Barnett or Demis Hassabis can do. That is a legitimate concern mate.
>>
>>8586851
Programming is a glorified trade job and a theory of computation PhD takes about 7 years not including all the english and electives you have to take at the same time so yeah you can easily do it.

Modern programming is poking a big library and stringing shit together unless you're involved in analysis or writing compilers or something.

Here you go can do both of these in 6mos doing all the exercises. https://www.cs.cmu.edu/~112/schedule.html

What reasons are you studying pure math?
How far along are you in major?
What is your favorite sub-field of math?
Post-graduation plans?

Feel free to answer what you're doing with a math degree if you already graduated, since not everyone on this board is 18.

>>
>>8586605
there's no pure math in europe. You just go to autism day center for that
>>
>>8586605
>What reasons are you studying pure math?
Personal interest in mathematics and a general disatisfaction with everything else.

Personal interest because I care deeply about the results of mathematics and about how those results are obtained.

Disatisfaction with other degrees because I simply cannot care enough. I cannot care enough about physics or chemistry (subjects I was also good at back in hs), I cannot care enough about engineering, I cannot care enough about anything else to study it for 4 years.

It all just seems too boring. Too trivial. It doesn't intrigue me, not like mathematics does. And whatever problems this could bring to my professional career I don't really care because I already have that "problem" sorted out.

>How far along are you in major?
I'm a sophomore.

>What is your favorite sub-field of math?
Algebra. In my freshman year I studied all the 3 main topics of math (analysis, algebra and geometry) very deeply (but not deep enough) and what I found is that analysis is trivial and boring, geometry can get too complex while at the same time lacking in substance (making it boring) but Algebra is just perfect. It is just right there in the middle. It is at the midpoint of difficulty and at the midpoint of meaning. I am definitely looking forward for my Junior year where we finally have 3 classes of just pure algebra.

>Post-graduation plans?

I am already decided in the fact that I will get a masters degree in mathematics. However, I will only also get that masters in pure mathematics if I get outstanding results all throughout my undergrad career. If I don't turn out to be a genius then I am considering many applied mathematics degrees that are very worthwhile.

Degrees that focus on mathematical finance/actuarial mathematics and degrees that focus on applied research for industry look very very juicy.

That said, if I don't turn out to be a genius, I intend to work in technology as I am already in that anyways.

On philosophical terms, have you ever considered that the purpose of being human is to exist never being fulfilled?

Your existence is a never ending quest for the unobtainable. To always exist reaching for the unreachable. To always have some unknown to discover understanding for which will never produce complete answers but more questions?

Do you ever consider that life as we know it is merely a distraction to keep us from dying, and that dying is probably were we're supposed to do?

No, I'm serious. I think about this all the time. No one is ever truly satisfied indefinitely with whatever accomplishment achieved.

There is always something else to reach for.
As if it is a game, and the game is to waste time until we die.

If you drill just a few miles into the crust of the earth, you can get high temperatures meaning this could easily create free electricity. Why are we relying on inefficient wind farms?

Anybody ever actually try to do the calculus that MIT teaches online? Nigga that shit is so hard lmfao. That shit is wayyyyyy different from the calculus I've done at my college and I'm at a top 20!! Why is MIT calculus so different from the calculus taught at other universities? Most calculus problems take like 30 seconds- 2 minutes max to finish, but not MIT calculus problems, you actually have to sit down for a good minute and think about that shit...

There's scales of certain personality characteristics that are backed up in psychological research that have been successfully used to predict behaviors.

And then there's categorical types mostly created to sell ideas to companies so the creators can get money. Like you posted.
