No contract, it was at will employment, but I was under the impression that while they don't need much of a reason to fire me, they would at least have to tell me, right?

Sounds like you were casual, meaning no. Had you been perm then yes you could fuck them up for unfair dismissal.

If you live in the United States and you are not a civil servant (which I am guessing you are not since you have a "schedule" ), then yes, it is perfectly legal. Employment law in the US is based on the concept of "At will employment". Basically, you as an employee have no rights, and the employer can fire you for almost any reason, for example if they don't like the shirt you wear to work one day. In theory you can also leave your job at any time and for any reason, but there is a real inequality of bargaining power between employers and employees, so the whole concept is really there just to fuck over employees.
If you live in most other civilized countries, you may be entitled to some sort of notice period or pay in lieu of notice. In Canada, you are entitled to one week of notice or pay for every year of service.

Check your state laws though. Most states allow you to qualify for unemployment if your hours are reduced to the point that you are effectively fired.
