Group theory nyigguh. If you're not a math major there's absolutely no need for you to know this.

I'm a math major. Basically, after your top-level calc/diff eq courses, those are the last """practical""" math courses you will take. As in, it's very advanced math, but it still has IRL applications with engineering and the like.

The next step for math majors is an introduction to "rigorous" courses. That is, you relearn a lot of what you already know, but you learn how to prove it very logically, writing it formally, while making no assumptions except for what is explicitly given.

In your math courses, people are given the tools by the teacher to solve problems. But rigorous courses examine the "why": going from very basic axioms which build on each other to form large theorems which make up the entire mathematical world. Sure you may know that 1 + 1 = 2, but in general why is it when we add two integers we get another integer? Things most people take for granted are examined to death in these kinds of courses.

If you're a smidge autistic like me, it's satisfying to see everything explained in a perfectly logical manner. Seeing the teacher write out the proofs helps me learn them better than if the theorems are just presented to me to copy down.

These courses teach one to creatively approach problems when the path to solve it isn't given, but other than that it really has no real-world application. Group theory (and by extension any rigorous proving of mathematical concepts) has no real-world application unless you want to go into academia and research math problems for the rest of your life.
