What's it like to live in an Eastern European/Slavic country? Is it as poor and destitute as westerners make out?

I'm British and I am intrigued by the Slavic way of life. My country seems so boring and run-of-the-mill by comparison.

I worked in USA for 6 years, and when I got back, I didnt work for a full year, not partying or anything, I was finishing my master degree and expanding my skillset in a field.
I spended around 11k BGN for everything (Rent in Sofia, food, taxes, expenses, clothes etc.) and that was like a month salary in the US.

I run my own business now, thinking of renewing my VISA soon and going back there, buying a house somewhere in Arizona, somewhere wild and untouched, no neighbors no anything. I am sick of loud shitheads and old commies here.
