Slowly approach it head on and then reach you arm out slowly towards its face. It will know that you want to scratch its head after a bit of distrust. Then usually it shows you were it wants to be petted. When I had my kitten some places I'd pet it would make him bite me or scratch but I pretty much didn't care because it didn't hurt. I'd just let it bite me on the hand sometimes, which I think was just playful.
