German language is the closest in europe to english. When I studied german in school it was shocking the amount of german words that are basically identical in english.

English is basically in the same language family. What trips people up is that English borrows a lot of french words thanks to the Normans conquering England. But it was still mostly only spoken by the ruling class, which sorta contnued a tradition even into North America which is why the upper-class americans like to use the fancy words derived from the french language and why speech that isn't heavy on word influenced from french carries the connotation of being low-brow.
