What's with serial killers and fucked up childhoods?
Like, I can hardly find any that had a somewhat normal life growing up. Ted Bundy's one of the few that I would put in this category, but even then you'd have to stretch the criteria by a quite a bit. But holy crap, some of the shit these killers grew up with, the conditions they lived under, escapes words. And make them come off as more tragic figures than straight up villains.
And coming from someone who had to intern at a mental ward for a couple years, people with abysmal childhoods rarely go to these extremes. Even committing crimes in general isn't as common as you would think. At worst, they'll have a few arrests for minor offenses, and decide they're not worth the trouble. Other than that, the more realistic scenario is that they grow up to be emotionally stunted adults who have trouble developing close relationships with people (think /r9k/).
