I'm 24, might as well be 25 at this point. I'm a shut in. If I was social, I doubt I would have trouble making friends/getting girls. I'm actually on the higher end of attractiveness and I'm also 6'3" and in good shape. I regularly exercise, but I prefer to do it at times when I won't run into people. I had a fucked up childhood by I had an opportunity to get close to girls but my anxiety disorder along with my up bringing didn't let me. After HS I figured I'd start datinf after college/uni was over, but I've had to switch degrees as well as work full time during it. As a result I went slow. Advice.

Growing up in the 90s everyone always said to focus on your education and everything would work out. I realized in at the end of high school and going into college that the sentiment is only true in the vaguest sense; an education will lower the chance that you will end up in a job like labor or sub minimum wage but an education alone will not secure a future. Without connections, it doesn't really matter what you know.

The further I got into my studies the more I began asking people how they found their jobs and the story most of the time was "Oh. I got my job because I knew person x". Rarely did they have their job strictly because of their degree.

Also, you have to take the fact that more people are getting degrees than ever into account. If a bunch of people have a degree for field y, the degree for field y doesn't matter anymore if it's already flooded. The differentiating factor in a situation like that is again, who you know rather than what you know.

I feel like it's only going to get worse too with how lenient colleges are going to become in the future to accommodate those who otherwise shouldn't be there.

They are actively encouraging those who cannot think critically to attend college by making it easier to get in. Likely the only reason this passed in California is because hardly any of the minorities can pass the exams to get in when they involve math. I went to a High School that was spanish/hispanic majority growing up. In order to graduate, we had to pass this exit exam called the CAHSEE.

Incidentally, it was found that only a small majority of the student body that was set to graduate could actually graduate, so they ended up scrapping it within 4 years with an addendum that allowed anyone who fulfilled all other requirements but passing the CAHSEE to graduate.

In other words, when an average student is actually tested, it's likely they aren't proficient at what they are tested on. People who really have a good grasp of the material are going to be enabled to climb higher and higher.

More and more people who are "qualified" with a degree or what have you are going to reach positions that they otherwise would not have been able to.

This means the slice of degree holders is going to be incredibly saturated to the point of them being worthless. The only way out of the sinking ship is to network like a madman.

Being the one who has the "best marks" didn't help earn any friends. If anything, people tended to dislike people like that for either breaking the curve of simply doing better than they did and would seek to bring them down. The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.

Your time is much better spent just networking, making friends, and bullshitting. Not only do you get the benefit of having friends, but you build up a communication network for later in life when you need a job. You are going to have to network anyway; you may as well get a headstart early. The earlier you practice, the more proficient you will be later when it matters for real.

If both you and someone from across the world are both capable of doing the same task, but the other person only wants 1/2 your wage, why would an employer ever hire you given the existence of the cheaper alternative? Because you've made friends with him or you have some kind of tie to them.

Go make friends. Don't be a nerd.
