The clues are all right there before you.

1. Rei can only take the form of the dead. She appears variously as Misato, Ritsuko, Yui, and so on.
2. To lure them into instrumentality, she has to break their A.T. fields. Love works in breaking down barriers, but other emotions work as well, such as fear, in the case of guitar guy.
3. Shinji couldn't be swayed by love, so Rei had to use hate.
4. Asuka died in the battle against the mass produced Evangelions and after that the scene with Asuka and Shinji in the kitchen occurs, right before the instrumentality process begins.
5. It was Rei in the form of Asuka that Shinji strangled.

Don't believe it? There was only one character in the series who was able to effortlessly manipulate people into strangling her. She did it before.

I remember when I first saw Eva on Adult Swim when I was in High School. It was the Magma Diver episode so I instantly hated the shallow show and the shallow Asuka depicted in it. I didn't watch another episode until I was 26 years old when I decided it was time to watch the series. As an adult, I definitely understood Asuka a lot more from a human level and sympathized with her. Shinji, Misato and Asuka are the series heroes. Rei has no personality, at first you think she's mysterious which leads to attraction but then you learn she's actually pretty robotic and undeveloped. Only an undeveloped boy could dream of a relationship with the doll-like Rei.

Asuka is truly the only choice.
