The fedora-tier atheism is indeed a 21st century fad. That's because people can express their opinions more openly and get social groups with common interests on the internet nowadays. It's the same with furries, tumblr-tier "feminists"/SJWs, my little pony enthusiasts, and many more groups.

But non-religiousness, or actual atheism, has been around for quite some time. I actually live in a country, where socialism/communism has caused religion to pretty much disappear from the country. Almost nobody in the area where I live is religious. It's been like that since at least the 1950s.

Of course, America is fucked beyond help. You are all Christians, but many of you don't actually PRACTICE Christianity, meaning you might as well be atheists, yet you shun atheists and make fun of them, yet at the same time you actually practice Jewish traditions (circumcisions).

Because atheism would get you killed or shunned in most of the world, because people believe what their parents or society at large believes, because there was no reason to break the mold and upset the people you love by basically saying you want to subject yourself to eternal damnation, because science wasn't so popular back then.

Now the smartest people are, by large, secular because a lot of these things simply don't exist to such a degree in the modern era. Most people coming up with everyday breakthroughs and new findings are secular. Most of the people who come up with the first cure to a type of cancer will not be theists.

Not really but I don't have to, my argument is that until a person starts to believe in a god they're an atheist. I never said that no one ever comes up with religion on their own, people like answers and will make them up for their own sanity if they have to. All of the people that don't determine that a god or gods created everything are atheists until they do believe as such.

No, it's always been around, but now one's chances of being killed for it are significantly smaller overall, therefore, people are less afraid of admitting it. It will still get you shunned by a significant part of society, which is why there must still be a lot of people unwilling to admit it.

I doubt it ever will. Even if we ever discover, understand, and control every single aspect of the universe we live in, there'll still be people who'll hold onto it as a means of dealing with death/mortality, moral compass (even if, as people already pointed out in this thread, people rarely, if ever, strictly follow their religion's commandments as a moral directive), and a way of giving their lives meaning (going to Heaven if you were a good Christian, or whatever your flavour of religion preaches).

WHICH religions will survive in the future, though, that's another story. We had quite a nice discussion a few months ago on /tg/, and it was pretty popular one hypothesis that said that, if humanity ever managed to go and explore space, the Abrahamic religions would eventually fade and die out, giving way to animistic ones like Shintoism, since we already have a natural tendency to humanize/anthropomorphize objects and animals around us. We'd stop worshipping the Big Skyfather to seek holyness in the vessels and tools that help keep us alive in the dark, cold void of space. Sounds pretty plausible to me.

Buddhism is probably the only mainstream religion where those kinds of beliefs can fit in and I don't think all of those 18% are Buddhists because the number goes from 12% to 18% when you switch from the very religious general public to the less religious scientists. For a lot of people they cant accept or function with the knowledge that the world is a fucked up place with no grand design. They cant take that the world literally only cares what it can get from you and will throw you away the second you are useless. For many the fear of death is so great that they need some sort of reassurance that it wont really be the end even though deep down they know it is.
