tl;dr I tried to start up a conversation with a Japanese qt I saw eating alone at this cafe place. I saw her sitting alone so I decided to test how good her English was and then possibly start up a conversation by walking up to her and pretending I needed directions to my hotel. She seemed to be able to understand me reasonably well but she didn't know how to get to my hotel so I tried to shift the conversation towards if she was from the area or not but she seemed to have a harder time understanding what I was saying than before. But instead of going with my gut and just fucking excusing myself and leaving like a normal person I decided to be "confident" and stay and keep trying to jump around to a topic that maybe she knew enough English to talk about. This continued with her responses becoming shorter and the atmosphere becoming more and more awkward until eventually she just took her things and left without even saying anything. As soon as she got up from the table I felt my face turning red as fuck because I started to snap back into reality and realize that I wasn't being "confident", I was just being an annoying creepy fuck. After that I didn't really try to talk to a girl again there.

I'm fairly normal and spent a month there. I never made a friend even in university and spent the whole month by myself. Japanese people were really cold when talking to me. I came in being extremely friendly, trying to respect their culture as much as I could, but after a month I just couldn't do it, I was being disrespectful just to have some release, old people shouted at me on the bus, people didn't really want to hang out with me, etc, but what ticked me off was how they couldn't be forward and just be like dude we don't like you, or anything that was actually happening.

When I came home I appreciated how my country wasn't as alienating to me.

The thing is, my story was not that rare when I started researching, some people just don't feel comfortable in that environment and as it turns out, I wasn't in a very healthy mental state at the end of the month.

The food was good though, I'd go back to Japan for a shorter period or with friends or family. Having someone to talk to in a country like that makes it so easier.

This is because there are many australian and dutch foreigners who go to Japan, go to bars, get drunk, and cause a ruckus. You will virtually never see those signs, and if you do it will only be because some dumbshit gaijin came and got angry while drunk, and screamed at someone or broke shit.

These foreigners never can speak Japanese. Letting these gaijin into your establishment can only cause trouble.

If you CAN speak Japanese, or at the very least make a decent effort, virtually all of the shops and stuff with those signs will let you in, with no issues. Act Japanese (ie quiet, not intent on making a fuss) and nobody will turn you away from an onsen or whatever.

Now there is one other case where they may turn away foreigners, and that is soaplands or whore houses, and this is because the language issue may make it unclear what is allowed or what isn't, but other than the language difference gaijin come to Japan thinking Japanese prostitutes are gonna be demure submissive types that they can rape in the ass and throw around, and besides, prostitution is illegal in Japan anyways so they aren't obligated to accept your money anyways. And there are plenty of prostitutes or soaplands who will.

it lets you stay in the country for three months or something, but every time you leave that number resets, and going to Singapore or whatever only costs like $150

I don't know that much. Just recall that from watching a japanese prison documentary. Shit is run like a military institution but you're afforded more privileges as a result for toeing the line. All non-japs get a small single cell while japs are put in fairly large rooms all things considered of, i think, six and get radio and tv and stuff. foreigners get most of that too but you're basically in solitary your entire stay when not working if not a jap. Shit runs smooth. Like goddamn you'd think there'd be some trouble but the warden was like "nope, people listen or else".

Lived in Japan for a number of years. I do not recommend people to move there. Unless you can somehow land a job as an expat at a global corporation, your life there will suck. Everything (bar housing) is expensive as fuck, most of the work (read: 99%) available to foreigners pay absolutely shit, and unless you're Chris Hemsworth you will get dirty looks from Japanese people. The people aren't all that nice, and are passive aggressive as fuck. I'm not a faggot with yellow fever so the women did nothing for me.

And to anyone who says Japanese can speak English well, this is 100% false. Even in Tokyo, your average person absolutely cannot string a complete sentence in English, let alone carry a conversation. I can't imagine how bad it is in other cities like Nagoya. It's funny, I went to Japan with this delusion, and once I got there I was greeted with people who couldn't speak English. Trying to find an apartment, registering at my local ward office, etc. was a nightmare. This is in stark contrast to when I went to Frankfurt and 75% of the people there spoke decent enough English. If you want proof Japanese suck at English, just look at their average TOEIC scores.
