Good evening lads, hope you're all doing well. Today I'm thinking about the importance of friends, the effect they have on you, and the reasons for this.

Personally, I remember I was much happier when I had a few close friends. The world seemed more vivid and my emotions more accentuated. Now that I am friendless the world seems more stagnant, and my emotions dulled. I think it comes down to stimulus. The world is exciting when we are stimulated. This stimulation can come in many forms. Things are stimulating because they are interesting, and things are interesting because they appeal to our emotions, our intellect, our skills, or our desires. A good friend is the ultimate stimulus because they can touch and heighten all these receptors. Other people are unpredictable, enigmatic even, because we cannot know them like we do ourselves; they may act in ways that we would never act, and think in ways that confound us. Compare this to a hypothetical scenario where everyone else on the planet is a clone of ourselves. Because we know exactly what to expect, I am sure the world would become extremely boring extremely quickly; it would be just as if we were entirely alone.

Since friends are merely advanced stimuli, the stagnation from being alone can be mitigated, I believe, through having a multitude of hobbies. This is why some people can be very reclusive and yet still be relatively content. Yet, seldom interacting with others whilst simultaneously having few or no hobbies is a recipe for depression due to the mundanity and predictability of life.

The concept of friendship has fascinated me greatly as of late.

Throughout my childhood I was educated largely from home as a result of continuous and fairly vicious bullying both in and around what I experienced of school. The social problems that entailed and the vast amount of time spent at home during my adolescence has meant that I have grown up without understanding what its like to have a friend. Whilst I've been pondering the matter a lot recently I don't recall a time where it was of immediate concern when I was younger. I've come to realise that I was very much confined to what I can only perceive as my own personal world, an existence rich enough in the stimulus you describe to leave me feeling content and satisfied for much of my youth despite living in complete isolation.

Ultimately I started to realise the importance of companionship as I grew older. Friendship can hold great value in understanding how to speak to other people and function in a communicative society.

My current situation is proving to be one of severe confusion. I seek to remain positive, but I cannot see myself functioning as a young adult for ever such a long time.
