All it would really seem for a long runner like Spider Man or Batman with them having a shit ton of different writers is that once a new writer comes in, the hero's character development is either reset or the hero is changed into an unlikable fuck to appeal to modern audiences.
Last comic i read would probably have been either the Mask comic or Punisher Max a few years ago.

There's an established mythos to the characters that the writers have no choice but to draw from, what's happening now is that postmodern "writers" just reinterpret the character as they see fit by arbitrarily adding in quirky feminist side characters and changing their race.
