you can already buy pretty decent audiovisual VR systems. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive and some others that look really promising coming out soon. other senses will take longer, but for smell at least the technology does mostly exist (just not really used anymore currently, could be brought back), also coarse-grained tactile vibration and temperature are easy enough with a vest or wetsuit-material-type bodysuit. it will be much harder to fake fine-grained touch or proprioceptive input though, sure. and truly good VR GUIs may take a while. I just hope lack of consumer demand doesn't kill it off early like 3d television got killed.
