I live in Sweden so we don't have college, the degree you apply for after high school will determine your career.
I'm 18 and so next year I'm going to apply for University and what education I pick will be the biggest decision in my life because it will determine my career for 40 years.
I have good grades (straight A's) so my parents want me to apply for medical school because the pay is good and it's easy to get a job.
The problem though is that I don't really have a burning interest for anything. I like science and philosophy but that's 50+% of all degrees.
I'm becoming very anxious, how do I know what career path is the right one?
>>38473462
>we don't have college
University is college, it's just a shitty american term
Just b yourself
I find it hard to believe you aren't interested in anything, how boring are you?
>>38473462
They should let you take a bunch of unrelated classes first year?
Take like 8 classes that you could envision yourself interested in taking further and see where you go from there.
What did you like doing in high school?
>>38473462
Pilot. So much fun
>>38473572
Sorry for the confusion, I meant we don't have undergraduate programs.
>I find it hard to believe you aren't interested in anything
I am interested in science and philosophy as well as a bit in arts but not to an extent where I can see a clear carrier path.
>>38473572
Actually this is untrue, in the UK they have High School then College and then if the student wishes University
im swedish and as a swedish person i support u to the fullest
>>38473612
Why not science? Which field interests you in particular? Most science degrees make you pretty employable.
>>38473612
>we don't have undergraduate programs
Now you are confusing me even more, you can't get any degree without undergraduate.
>>38473629
What? I genuinely don't understand. What do you mean by college in this instance, in non-american english college often is a stand-in for Highschool.
>>38473598
I'm not 100% certain on this but I think the classes are predetermined. I know that in the University of Gothenburg for instance, the first two semesters in pharmacy and medicine is the same so you have possiblity to switch after a year.
With that being said, that's not a lot of flexibility. I can't go from medicine to computer science without starting from the beginning.
>>38473642
The huge problem is that I am as interested in medicine, as in engineering as in law.
Fundamentally I just enjoy problem solving.
My parents pestered me for a whole year about going.I also was completely disinterested in anything and disgusted by the amount of fags, sjw and spoiled princess faggots my college had when I visited to apply for my entrance test. Never showed up for it.
I am turning 19 in 2 weeks. Finally free from gay school and feeling great.
>>38473689
>I just enjoy problem solving
Probably want to do engineering then, but only if you have the knack for math
>>38473676
Highschool is from like 12 to 16, College is from 16 to 18 and Uni is usually 2 years
If you like maths do physics.
If you are interested in logic puzzles, complex systems, and are detail-oriented, do chemistry (best science imo).
If you are interested in the big picture, life systems, and potentially want to do field research, do biology.
>>38473726
Jeez you just blew my mind, in nz highschool is 13-17, and uni 18-20.
>>38473689
Either Medicine or law would do you much better than engineering, and in all likelihood provide more intellectual fulfillment in your day-to-day work.
Take it from me though, whatever choice you make, it doesn't really matter and you can still more or less do anything you want. Work should only be a small aspect of your life and your idea of self, don't let this choice consume you, nor should you let the expectations of others force something you're not passionate about to wear you down.
>>38473689
If you enjoy problem solving, do physics. Great degree to have on the job market.
>>38473676
I don't know the right terms but this is the education system in Sweden by age
7-14 middle school
14-16 high school
16-19 senior high school.
Senior high school is when you specialize in high school. Different specializations mean that you read different courses. You can specialize in societal studies, natural science etc.
The courses you read determine what degree you can apply for after Senior high school.
It's like the first 4 years of college but less advanced.
I'm in the last year of the natural science program which means I read a lot of maths and science so I am qualified to almost all degrees.
When you're finished with Senior high school you apply for a degree that will directly give you a job title.
For instance, Next year I can apply for medical school or law. There is no pre med in Sweden so what I choose now will determine my career.
>>38473775
How long would med take starting from this point?
Med takes 7 years including premed here.
>>38473727
If I enjoy all three?
My favorite subjects in school are in no particular order: math, physics, chemistry, biology, physcology and philosophy.
Outside of school I really enjoy watching debates.
>>38473809
Five and a half years and it's also free although you often have to take student loans for cost of living as the government assistance is not enough besides rent in a lot of places.
>>38473705
>>38473762
I do really appreciate the input here but I'm getting conflicting answers.
Why is law/medicine better than engineering or vice versa?
>>38473860
In terms of jobs/money
Medicine > Engineer > Law
In terms of ease of degree
Engineer=Law>Medicine
In terms of job satisfaction
Medicine>Engineer>Law
>>38473821
If you're as smart as you say, you want to do chemistry. It incorporates physics, math, and fun logic problems in complex systems with real-world applications. And you can make a ton of money with it, depending on what you go into. You can do corporate work, research, biochem, materials science, or go to med school after. On top of that, it gives you a really beautiful worldview once you really start to comprehend how the building blocks of life fit together. It's like a game, once you get good at it.
At least, that's my experience. You won't get bored with chem, that's for sure.
>>38473913
So If I maintain my grades, get into medical school and don't fail, I should just go for medicine?
>>38473928
Thank you for the extensive explanation.
Where do I begin to read more into this? What is the chemistry degree/education that is viewed as the best/cream of the crop?
>>38473967
Depends, if you like the challenge, can stand being at uni for 5+ years and actually want to help people (this is key) then absolutely.
You also can't get grossed out by human bodies and you must have decent hand dexterity.
>>38473635
Thank you, friend!

You will get a good chemistry degree at any major science / research institution. To tell you the truth, chemistry is hard and it requires a lot of work if you want to get good grades. It's really one of those degrees where your grades matter more than the school because of how difficult it is. If you absolutely want the best degree, any Ivy League school, California school or Northwestern type school would look amazing. Don't know much about European universities.
kom till aoland, vi har en ganska bra linje kallad fastighetskotare, man faor arbete direkt naer man har gaott ut
Det ar sa alltsa?
>>38473727
i LOOOVE chemistry but OHGOOOOD i hate math so fucking much it would be the perfect thing ever if it wasnt for math
What TO DOOO
>>38473967
Just so you know, you shouldn't listen to americans when it comes to pay grades because it's not the same in sweden, especially with the incredible taxes you're hit with as soon as you earn more than a middle-class wage.
You don't become rich just because you have a medical degree.
>>38473462
This might actually relate, I'm at medical school in Australia, straight out of high school as well.
If you need to be challenged to learn something do engineering/physics. Medical school is endless remembering with no real problem solving. Though I think it gets better in clinical years.
Honestly if you don't have any burning passion in another area (unlike me), medicine isn't a bad choice, it's a safe job with great money and a medical degree will get you job in other sectors as well.
>>38473462
>I live in Sweden so we don't have college, the degree you apply for after high school will determine your career.
oh like in the bee movie? thats cool!
