No they are not. It used to be one chain owned by two German brothers who fell out over selling tobacco and then split and went separate ways. That was the big difference in the 90s and even up until early 2000s. Lidls sold cheap cigarettes while Aldi did not.

Source: German and been shopping at both for nigh on 20 years and know more about the history of Lidl and Aldi than any man should.

Also: epic biographic film of the brothers when?

>>
>>38320617
American stores are quite different, both in a positive and a negative way.
Take Walmart for example. They have actual store greeters. They get paid to stand in the entrance area and say hello to you.
This may sound ridiculous, but these jobs are often done by people that can't do other jobs, e.g. the handicapped, elderly, etc.
The cashiers also aren't in as much of a rush. In Germany, it's like "hello - that's 21.50 - have a nice day"
In America it's like "How are you doing sir? I like your jacket. What wonderful weather it is today. Oh that will be 21.50, will that be with cash or credit? Do you have a Walmart value card? Well have a wonderful day today sir!"

You can like it or hate it. It's just cultural differences I guess
>>
>>38320721
Yeah, it wasn't until i went to Aldi that i saw cashiers sitting down

Wut? That's so strange to me (U.K)

I get the greeter thing, that's actually, quite nice. (although funny that a robot probably would even be able to do this job when a literal downie could)

How common are self service checkouts if that is the cultural norm? And do people use them? I fucking hate them personally for a few reasons:

-stealing jobs to save money for the company
-you are basically working for them for free for 5 minutes, do it 100 times and you've basically, worked an unpaid shift for those cunts without even getting a discount.

There is a Lidl near me which has 2 checkouts (mostly closed) and 18 self service checkouts which is nuts. I guess penny pinching is how they keep their stuff so cheap.
>>
>>38319467
So Lidl and Aldi are the Puma and Adidas of supermarkets?

When I lived in London I often shopped at Lidl, but Aldi was the only chain I didn't shop at.
Now there's no Lidl in my state and I often shop at Aldi.

The greeters are also fairly low-end loss prevention, a lot of shoplifters don't like people eyeing them when they leave.

My Walmart is bad enough that most of the time they check receipts before they let you leave
>>
>>38319467
Source your ass. There are two ALDI companies which used to be owned by the respective brothers. North and south. They devided Germany (There is an ALDI equator here) and after that they went off to specific countries. In the US there is ONLY ALDI south. Only indirectly there's also ALDI north as it owns trader joes i think.

Lidl is an entirely different Company
