My parents are from different but both notoriously insular ethnic groups and so before them there was little to no mixing in either line

Dude I'm 15% Japanese and look nothing like your average Japanese citizen. I'd be just as much an outcast there as I am here. Unless you're 100% Japanese don't even bother going. At least not to leave there a vacation might be ok

Parents are from Hyderabad, India

My ancestors have likely lived in India going back a solid two thousand years, possibly more

India is far more diverse than most non Indians might think, but I am fairly confident that all my ancestors are in some form "Indian"

It is only with the latest two generations that we've moved to the US

I don't think even a genetic test could actually prove it though. Even if they found some east Asian ancestry that wouldn't show it was specifically Japanese, and the more likely explanation would be that it came from a Chinese ancestor somewhere along the line.
