What do you think about mainstream modern music?

daft punk is so fucking cringe, if you say you like daft punk that's the most basic shit ever.

i'd rather date someone who says he listens to country or anything but. shit, even silence.

saying "i love daft punk" is admitting you are subpar as fuck. its not even considered music?

just imagining the kinds of people who actually jam to daft punk ehhhh no thanks

even people who say "i love rebecca black" have more dignity
>>
>>38182773
youre probably gay bc r9k is trap hell but if not

REEEEEEEE GET OFF MY BOARD
>>
>>38182773
rebecca black is pretty good desu senpai
>>
no literally, i don't know what's worse

saying "i listen to daft punk" or "i love linkin park"

even christian rap listeners have more personality than daft punk listeners LMAO
>>
I understand hating RAM and all the obnoxious pop shit that came out of it but how the fuck can you hate the guys that made Discovery and Homework?
>>
>>38182773

Lol. I know you, you're in a discord I visit.
>>
>>38182704
As a hipster piece of shit from /mu/ who mostly enjoys whiny emo music, the Weeknd is probably the best mainstream artist out there right now. His work with Daft Punk is great and it makes me want more Daft Punk. More like RAM. Fuck you RAM is good.
Nearly everything else mainstream is shit though honestly.
>>
>>38182704
I try not to think about it even if ironically my goal is to work as a producer & songwriter and would totally write & produce songs for Justin Bieber or Gwen Stefani or whoever kids are into these days.

Music is for everyone, for loners who are into punk and metal as well as for normies with a million friends who listen to pop and rap. Those genres of music all serve a purpose, everyone deserves to have music that speaks to them.

>>38182798
This is true. She's 20 years old now and has been putting out song after song after song since Friday. The first few were hit or miss but she really found her voice now.

I don't even have discord on my computer.

You and your anime avatar gang can die. No thanks. :) Also I don't game, so there's that.

>implying post-GKMC Kendrick is the best
Nah. His work has been significantly weaker since.
>>
>>38182905

The depth of the ((programming)) really is fascinating; despite pretending to believe that music taste is subjective, it's still safely groupthink to reject those bands, Nickelback, Creed, Vanilla Ice, etc and even entire genres like emo, punk, country. A group consisting of white men or one just lyricizing about white issues must be reduced to a joke and laughed out of relevance so only Nicki "The Implant" Minaj, The Koalburnin' Kardashians, and Ariana-sharia Grande can take up the limelight.
>>
>>38183133
It's not like the Weeknd is any better than the trilogy

>>
>>38182704

Mainstream used to have some decency, but today it is cancer music.

>Everything sounds the same, genres affect one another
>Barely any alternative music
>Meaningless lyrics (even generic is better than meaningless but today we don't even have that)
>People adoring "artists" for their "talent" when literally almost none of them write or compose their own music
>Even electronic music is less diverse

I have a pretty shit taste in music but current mainstream is total cancer.
>>
>>38182704
>>38183088
but I gotta say that I preferred it when rock music was still a mainstream popular thing 10+ years ago.

please tell me about pop diversity in the early 80s and 90s

It all sounded the same too back then, but at least lyrics at least sometimes meant something, genres had less effect on one another and alternative music existed.
>>
>>38183387
Now that's a good goy. Stay the path.
>>
>>38182704
The weeknd is REALLY trying to be michael jackson
>>
>>38183349
not him, and he already said it, but there was at least a mainstream alternative scene back then.

Even if it was le epic cringe like hair metal and pop-punk and mallgoth and emo music - it was at least something in the mainstream that was a touch of yin to the overwhelming yang.

None of that is in the modern mainstream. It's well overdue for a comeback.
>>
>>38183398
>but at least lyrics at least sometimes meant something
Yeah because Britney Spears and Modanna really meant something during their respective years, right?
>genres had less effect on one another
What the fuck does this even mean?
>alternative music existed
It still does.
>>
It feels like 80% of on-the-radio stuff sounds like this even though its probably not true

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bC3uMnEclc

but it really feels that way
>>
>>38183462

>Yeah because Britney Spears and Modanna really meant something during their respective years, right?
I said 'sometimes'. Not 'all the time'.

>What the fuck does this even mean?
Today genres are merging. Pop music today is heavily influenced by rap/trap and dance music, for example.

>It still does.
Barely. It doesn't get as nearly as air time it used to, and mainstream consists of around 0% alternative music.
>>
>>38183425
Michael Jackson can dance. ugly weeknd can't.
CB closer to MJ in dance. Guys should learn 2 dance like CBinstead of fapping to trannie porn heh

bullshit it does, what are the major rock groups of today? You still have leftover 90s groups like Blink 182 and Slipknot around but they are a fraction of the popularity they once had - and they're also bands from 15-25 years.

In the 90s you didn't have bands from the 70s as alternative music.
>>
What the fuck was up with the big americana trend (all that music with the banjos and dust-bowl outfits and twangy country sound even though it was rock??) that just fucked off

Seems like the bands involved in it went super generic, especially these guys, they went from this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FAf0JGgbPdg

theres plenty, theyre just not represented commercially like they were
back in the 90s you had mtv and shit to boost the "underground" now that shit finds its way around online
and you have different tiers of "alt" music
theres the commercially successful "indie" music like alt-J and fleet foxes and shit like that
then you have internetcore like car seat headrest and alex g

I seriously just don't enjoy it.

normies just listen to what is seemingly the same simple shit over and over again

CCR, ACDC, Queen, David Bowie, The Who and others are my choice for car/party/work music

Gregorian Chanting, Pipe Organ, and Wagner are my favorites for ambient/study/alone music

am I autistic?

>>38183753

None of these ever get heard on the radio, get played on MTV or get coverage in entertainment magazines/TV shows. It's not profitable for record companies to sign alternative groups. Less people are listening to alternative music and even less are making alternative music.
>>
>>38183778
How can you criticize people for liking the same simple shit when you enjoy ACDC?
>>
>>38183753
>theres plenty, theyre just not represented commercially like they were

That's what we're trying to tell you.

Alternative music was mainstream music up until the mid-late 2000s. As mainstream as pop music. Korn and Manson were at the top of MTV next to Briney and N'Sync.

Not anymore. That's why modern mainstream music isn't as diverse.
>>
>>38183839
touche I guess
>>
>>38183778
>ACDC, Queen, David Bowie

Some of the normiest, simplest and most entry-level groups.
>>
>>38183837
>get played on MTV

???

MTV stopped playing music videos before I was born...
>>
>>38183971
Not him, but imagine the millenial equivalent - like they don't get featured on youtube's featured videos section and rack up half a billion views in a couple of weeks.
>>
>>38183971

MTV music channels still exist. The main channel pretty much doesn't play music.
>>
>>38183971
i remember seeing the music videos for float on and feel good inc and other songs multiple times when I was already like 13 and that was in 2005 on mtv

fuck you talkin bout
>>
>>38183861
>Korn and Manson were at the top of MTV
If YouTube were a thing back in 1999 I guarantee all these pop songs would have the most views, with Korn and Manson having maybe a quarter of the views (just like things are now.) Looking at the top 100 singles from 1997-2000 I can tell you Korn and Manson paled in comparison to Britney and N'Sync. Hell I don't even think I saw them on the top 100's.
Mainstream music is just as diverse, it's just being presented in a different way. Things are much more accessible and TV/Radio no longer are forced to diversify for revenue.

>The music video debuted at number eight on MTV's Total Request Live on February 9, 1999, and peaking at number 1 on its thirteenth day, February 25. and spent ten non-consecutive days at the top position until its "retirement", on May 11, 1999

>#3 of the US top 200
>>
>>38184044

It's fine if alt music doesn't get to be top 10. But the music industry is completely overwhelmed by pop these days and it's crap. But recent alt music doesn't even get to be played, let alone be represented in charts and stuff.

Who's this music for?
Like what do normies do when they listen to it.
Dance? Sit and listen? It's so generic and trying to be different. Literally one cunt hops on a musicians dick and every normie takes hold. It's a great way to make a lot of money, if only we could convince a roasty to get toasty with us.
>>
>>38184123
>>38184044

Korn's FTL also reached #1 of the top 200, it reached #1 in 4 different countries.

I could do this all night but I won't. I don't know why you're trying to be an apologist for the dilution of mainstream culture.
>>
>>38183332
You said you thought he was "probably the best mainstream artist out there right now" I wouldn't say it's terrible but definitely not "the best" As far as I'm concerned Queens of the Stone Age solely because of Josh Homme is leagues ahead and they're mainstream as hell
>>
>>38184146
Daft Punk is for 50+ year olds.
>>
>>38184174
Notice I was posting "Singles" which is what matters when talking relevancy. It's singles that get played on the radio and TV, not full albums. Besides you're posting weekly charts and not yearly. Look at the yearly charts and you'll see that alt albums often did weaker than pop albums.
Also why are you implying I'm being an apologist? I hate mainstream music, my point is it's always been garbage. Even in the 1990s/1980s popshit reigned supreme. In the 80's Duran Duran was more popular than Guns N' Roses for example.
>>
>>38184272
>>38183861
>That's what we're trying to tell you.
>Alternative music was mainstream music up until the mid-late 2000s.

the 80s had Guns n Roses
the 90s had Korn
the 2000s had My Chemical Romance
the 2010s have dick-all as mainstream alternative music.

Everyday decade earlier had some mainstream alternative music. Mainstream music wasn't always entirely wall-to-wall shit like it is today.
