how can i start enjoying rap? do i have to be black?
>>
>>38081516
Like a good beat first.
>>
>>38081516
Find fun, melodic rap songs first. Those usually come from the South. It's easy to transition into hip hop if you start with hip pop or old blues influenced Southern rap.
>>
>>38081321
I prefer ScHoolboy Q

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dBy9KEorjw
>>
>>38081321
I used to be a fan but I really don't like his new stuff anymore? he ran out of stories to tell.
>>
>>38081321
I really like Good Kid MAAD City and I like assorted songs from other albums.

>>38081621
He's great too. I like J. Cole as well.
>>
>>38081667
He's a non threatening black man with slightly above average rap skills and a message. The non threatening part attracts white people and their mother to listen to him, especially after the song DAMN.
>>
>>38081874
This, it's the "I only like Macklemore" demographic
>>
>>38081516
I went to an XXXTENTACION concert and it was 97% white (mostly suburban Sallys but also wanna be gangsters) and 1% black 1% Asain 1% Mexican.. it was in a predominantly black city in the hood. So white people do enjoy rap. It wouldn't be popular if white people also listened to it.

To get into it, listen to the beat and the words if they mean something. Pretend you understand the stuggle and hustle.
>>
>>38081874
>>38081927
I'm a big fan of Kendrick and I also like Tupac, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Xzibit, Wu-Tang Clan, and ScHoolboy Q. What now?
>>
>>38081321
DAMN IS HIS WORST ALBUM
>>
>>38082029
You're a basic white person. Better than a hipster who listens to trash music but pretends it's good because it's obscure.

I have questions though. Do you relate to the stuff they rap about? Do you live vicariouly through their songs to see what it's like to be black? Or do you just enjoy the beat?

I just like the beat and the lyricism and delivery - not necessarily what they're talking about specifically but how the syllables and rhythm sound.
>>
I like Bones TEAMSESH
>>
>>38081321

>be me
>bassist
>listen to To Pimp a Butterfly
>"Damn. This is really good!"
>Turns out I was just listening to Thundercat
>Listens to Thundercat, Flying Lotus, and Kendrick.
>Likes Kendrick the least of the three
>>
>>38082163
So you dont actually appreciate their music. How can you keep listening knowing that? I'm not a music snob and I'm not judging who you listen to but rap is the way they communicated their pain and wanted people to actually listen to and understand it. Not just "it sounds cool"
>>
>>38082430
>rap is the way they communicated their pain

Idk, if you listen to Kanye's stuff only some of it is about pain. It's mostly bragging.
>>
>>38082430
Well. It's music.
Not that anon. But I rather emphasis be put on music than lyrical context.
>>
>>38082430
I don't think they give much of a shit whether I delve super deeply into their lyrics DESU. Sometimes I look up lyrics to songs I really like on genius and read through the explanations but mostly I just like the way it sounds. It's music, the point of music is to sound good.
>>
>>38082430
>are you living vicariously thru their lyrics to try and see what it's like to be black? That's racist!
>you don't listen to the lyrics and understand their pain of being black? That's racist!

Nigga, what are you doing here?

>>38082258
Also this
I get into Flylo and Thundercat first but I had no idea how much influence and creative input they had on just about everything to do with To Pimp a Butterfly and their absence is extremely noticeable when going to Kendrick's other works.

Not that they're bad or anything, DAMN and GKMC are fantastic rap albums but Flylo and Thundercat elevated his music to something truly special and defining with TPaB.

Drunk is better than DAMN
>>
>>38082511
>>38082513
You guys are right. It is music. If the beat is trash but the words mean something, people aren't gonna listen regardless of what is said.

>>38082473
Most rapping now is bragging.

>>38082616
They answered my question, i get it now. I was over thinking it.
>>
I WISH MY DICK WAS AS BIG AS THE EIFFEL TOWER

Good deadlifting song
>>
>>38082616

Flylo and Thundercat not only had an influence on those albums, but they also had a massive impact on my playing. I was always doing traditional jazz or black metal, but they opened up my playing style to just get weird with it.

Also went out and got a moogerfooger. Forced me to learn about sound and frequency modulation in music other than what I was doing for radio and computer sciences in school.

>>
>>38082004
I hate XXXtentacion's fans. They're the nerdiest fucking suburban betas who delude themselves into thinking they're hard. They have no idea what an actual bad motherfucker looks like, that's why they worship X. The reason you don't see many minorities is because you don't get gangster points among minorities for doing the shit X has done.

another anon here butting in. i was into flylo, thundercat and knxwledge. had only heard gkmc, then i downloaded the more recent stuff from kendrick. I heard one of the tracks on tpab Momma. swear it felt really familiar, and turns out it's knxwledge who helped make that track.

another dude who has a very unique sound that is recognizable
he works with anderson paak on something right now which is pretty gud and groovy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZBmyqN0Ab4
>>
>>38082727
Right? Did the same for my production work. I play bass sometimes as well and picked up a 6 string just to fuck around with but I'm mainly a producer. Flylo's sound design and layering inspired a lot of my own stuff as well. It's kinda weird to listen to Kendrick's other stuff without that and especially now since that recent interview he did saying TPaB is his least favorite album of his own.
>>
>>38082794
Fucking this all the way. I heard quite a few black people say they fuck with the song Look at Me but hated X. I just wanna know why edgy middle schoolers like him. Why him of all people?
>>
>>38081516
Try listening to one of these albums, they're a good place for someone to start with the genre
> Good Kid, m.A.A.d City - Kendrick Lamar
>We Got It From Here, Thank You 4 Your Service - A Tribe Called Quest
> My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy - Kanye West
> Illmatic - Nas
>>
Good kid maad city is his best album. Collect Calls and Ding About me/Dying of thirst are top tier

https://open.spotify.com/track/1Z2FvDFZSDQ23s4BDqpWqZ
>>
>>38082914
He said Section 80 was his least favorite. Anyway, it's complicated. To Pimp a Butterfly was a very personal album about Kendrick. Dealing with the guilt of becoming rich, surviving while his friends died, trying to find purpose by traveling to Africa, the duality of self love and self hate. It dealt with a lot of personal stuff but people just chalked it up to another pto black power album. Kendrick was disappointed with this and felt he failed a little bit

No one really listen to Pimp a Butterfly more than a few times. I have it on my phone but it's just so fucking hard to get through because it's him doing spoken word poetry over drums and saxophones. King Kunta, i, u and the beginning of Complexion are the only songs that are listenable imo.
>>
>>38081516
You need to have an IQ lower than 100.
>>
>>38083113
>>38083193
Both true but I feel like as a whole, it's one of the greatest albums of the modern era. Just like with a lot of the "greatest films" they can be hard to get through. The "best" is different than a "favorite" really.

Like honestly so far I'd say DAMN might be my favorite overall because of how catchy the majority of the individual songs are but as a whole piece of art, it's far less interesting than TPaB.
>>
>>38083193
>No one really listen to Pimp a Butterfly more than a few times

I may not listen to it all the way through a lot but the opening half is fucking god tier. Wesley's Theory might be one of the best openers of any hip hop album
>>
>>38083612
Yeah I feel you. I listen to GKMC and DAMN more often but I can't say they're objectively better than TPAB. To Pimp a Butterfly was just so ambitious and unique and doesn't have filler tracks like LOVE and GOD
>>
>>38083674
Agreed, even when I legit like those filler songs too, despite hating most of Drake's music, I love that Drake style hip hop on LOVE.

>>
>>38084422
>He's such a great story teller.
Agreed. it's my favorite part about Kendrick. Not many modern rappers can tell a great story. I think that's why I didn't like DAMN as much as his other work, as it had less stories. But it did have DUCKWORTH
>>
>>38084512
t. Never listened to a single Kendrick track. He even has a song saying that blacks should "build their own pyramids and write their own hieroglyphs"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibL0ar4z1bo
Decent shitpost tho
>>
>>38081321
I'm very ambivalent about him. That being said I think he raises some valid points about the conflict inside all of us. Trying to satisfy the beast and trying to be a semi-decent human being. YA BISH
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtxmnBQmfZs
>>
>>38084633
I'm pretty sure Kendrick simply has BPD. After being a fan of his for so long and listening to all his music, I think there's something clinically wrong with him. Did you listen to DAMN? There's a LOT of depressing tracks on it. FEEL, FEAR, PRIDE, XXX and arguably LUST.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw3dwG8R2rs
>>
>>38084704
I listened to DAMN and it keeps going on with the same theme about him just a bit more accentuated. It seems very hard to pin him down. It's very hard to be satisfied with an album of him as you can always find contradictions and stuff to disagree with but there's also a lot of great stuff.
>>
>>38084771
That's what I mean when I say I think the guy has BPD. he had 'u' which was a self-hating track about suicidal ideation and guilt (a VERY bold track in hip-hop) and 'i' a song about self-love and acceptance both on the same album. I don't think Kendrick can really be pinned because his emotions are scattered.
>>
>>38084843
then it's very likely I have BPD as well.. I can feel like the most tolerant person today and the next day I can get bitter about the pettiest shit

DNA for some reason reminds me of where I grew up. I went to a majority white elementary school and when I would leave, I would go back to my neighborhood where neighbors would rob neighbors, you'd hear gun shots into the night, people fighting about stuff out in the open which would turn into gun shots into the night, dogs loose, someone bumping old school hip hop in their Grand Nationals with good systems. I would see more of that when my mom would move me to the middle school she went to which became majority Mexican.

Also non white.

Listen to something melodic as others have mentioned.

Try the song POWER by Kanye West and if you like the melody listen to "Runaway" by him too. If you like both these songs you should listen to "my beautiful dark twisted fantasy". If not, try another artist who you do find melodic.

They listen to the singles and pay attention to the beat. Also, I think a lot of them only pretend to listen Kendrick Lamar. There's no way that all those people praising TPAB listened to the entire thing.
