Do you know what kind of vast knowledge it requires to be a pharmacist? You need to know every side effect, every adverse effect, every drug interaction, every therapeutic range, and every mechanism of action of every drug in existence, plus all herbal and alternative medicines such as St. John's Wort. You also need to know every single form that a given medicine can come in and answer any and all questions about each form and how it differs from the other forms and which form would be best to give in each specific circumstance. In short, it is an assload of information to learn, and it changes all the time.

Healthcare professionals call the pharmacy all the time and ask about alternative forms of drugs, what is recommended, if there would be a problem with administering a specific drug to a specific type of patient, which drugs are compatible in the same line and which drugs need a new line to administer. These are all things that you didn't even know existed, but I call pharmacy on a daily basis to get their opinion and expertise on topics. They are immensely useful. A doctor must learn all the disease processes in the entire world, he doesn't have time to learn every drug in the world as well, nor do you want him to do that because that would take away from him being able to learn the subtle signs of disease. When he can call Pharmacy and ask them about their drug knowledge he doesn't need to become a specialist in that area of study. Doctors should specialize in diagnosing and treating disease because that is what they do uniquely.

The type of person I hate is someone who makes assumptions about other people and then gets mad about it. You didn't even know 25% of what the job entails and yet you assume you know 100%, then invented something to be mad about. What a shit human being.

As someone who worked in a pharmacy for 2 years and is about to become a Tech, pharmacist do WAY more than count pills. They make sure you're not going to fucking die or have complicated effects based off the combination of drugs you are taking.

Also, do you have any fucking idea how many times a doctor fucks up a script? How many times we have to call them up and get clarification because the doctor is a dumbass and prescribed something that doesn't exist? Granted, I don't think it's the doctor's fault but rather the people who write the scripts for them.

Also, there are a lot of shady doctors that will prescribe controls for a patient just because they asked. In fact we have a few in the area that are so bad that we just call the scripts "Toliet Paper Scripts".

No, in theory they need to be there because sometimes the computer will be wrong and it is ultimately the pharmacist's job to catch the doctor's mistake, but most of them don't ever need to do that. Most people don't take highly interactive medications; most people don't take medicines with dangerously low therapeutic ranges, most people don't take cocktails of medication. Doctors also prevent most of the possible horrible interactions because they DO need to learn all about the medications they prescribe for the illnesses they diagnose. The difference is that they aren't required to be knowledgeable on the chemistry of those medications.
