Was it good or bad for England that William won ?

>takes control of southern england
He took control of all of England. Also, the English were just in another war. The English had just defeated the Norwegian invasion of England in 1066 at the battle of stanford bridge, and also some of the soldiers had to return home for the yearly harvest

Technically OP is correct tho. The Godwinson family only held southern England. Northern England had always maintained a somewhat semi-independent status under Anglo-Saxon England.
It was brought under Norman control completely after the initial conquest. Its called "The harrying of the north" and it happened in the years after 1066.

Not really. It was basically hell for the Anglo-Saxons, they didn't like Norman rule and kept trying to rebel and they kept losing. The normans were getting murdered by the locals so much that the Normans made a law saying any corpses found near villages need to be proven to be saxons. If they couldn't prove it was a saxon corpse then it was norman and the closest village paid a fine.
The reason the Normans built so many castles in England was because it was a safe space for them. Like military bases, not built to protect the people but built to oppress them. This is different fron Anglo-Saxon forts built to protect and govern the locals.

Hmm, I stand corrected. Thank you anon for sharing this piece of information with me. I enjoy history, but I've never been the type to like to read books.

Pandemonium. The Anarchy turned England into a fucking hellscape, and England was all of a sudden saddled with a war no one but the nobles wanted to fight every ten years.
Look up "The Norman Yoke."

The Anarchy was a fair bit later than the initial Norman conquest though.
And while the norman kings were psychotic nutjobs at least they were mostly focused on fucking up the French rather than raiding us.

Its cool. Another interesting fact. Harold and his family can actually be said to be Anglo-Danish and not Anglo-Saxon. He was of mixed Anglo-Saxon and Norse ancestry and Harold was actually a common name among the Danish/Norse people and their Kings at the time.
If I'm not mistaken he was actually born when the Knytling family (Danish family and first family to rule Denmark) held the English throne. At the time many of their Kings were called Harold. So he was probably named after a Danish King.

>the norman kings were psychotic nutjobs
I was always impressed at how just and well the Norman kings ruled England
>>37806644
Thank you for sharing these with me anon.

Considering their principle hobby was murdering their family members and the french, it's incredibly impressive.
I guess they knew they wouldn't have any time to dedicate to the law and so streamlined and standardised the whole thing so they could fuck off and fight

Its a topic that triggers my autism so I can't help it.
Its pretty crazy that England is always seen as free of invasion when historically its been invaded like 5 times and after each invasion the local people adopt the invaders culture.
Celts -> Romans -> Anglo-Saxons ->Norse/Danes -> Normans
Pretty cucked imo
>>37806894
To be fair the continued line from Norman to modern day english is pretty uninterrupted, so in comparison to other more cucked cultures England is doing alright.
>>37806621
Yeah. But even then, England's nobility were still speaking French and still called themselves Norman.

Harald*
coincidentally, that's also what the norwegian claimant to the throne was named
