Anyone else here a nurse? How do you deal with it?

>didn't know i'd be like this when i enrolled into nursing school
>hate talking to people now
>really nervous
>pretending to be normal takes so much effort

Also
>never worked a day in my life
>about to move to a foreign country to work
>almost no nursing knowledge
>about to embarrass myself
>in a foreign country whose language i don't speak perfectly
>>
>>37496477
How could you not know what being a nurse would be like even after attendinh school? Even people who's never set a foot in a hospital know it's one of the shittiest jobs there could be
>extremely long shifts
>constant hard work
>have to deal with patients and theit relatives
>have to cleam patients when they piss and shit themselves
>no one will ever recognize all the things you do while they praise doctors whose job is mostly interpret tests results
>shit pay in most countries
It's the kind of job if you genuinely love people and NURSING them. GTFO of there if you are a sperg, asap
>>
>>37496477
My girlfriend is a nurse but she works with infants in the nursery so it's pretty comfy for her
>>
>>37496477
I considered a degree in nursing for a while and now I'm undeclared again. Wtf do I do in this life
>>
>no one will ever recognize all the things you do while they praise doctors whose job is mostly interpret tests results

At least you guys get scheduled breaks and get to leave on time.
>>
>>37496868
And start their career as early as 22 instead of mid 30s
>>
>>37496868
Most doctors don't need breaks because they don't do shit all day. Leaving on time is hardly a plus after a 18+ hour long shift
>>
>>37496477

I was studying to become one, but I quit because I couldn't deal with it. Almost every shift had me crying on the way home. My big problem was that all I saw was misery and sadness.
>>
>>37496868
You're a doctor? How stressful is your job and what kind of doctor are you?
>>
>>37496477
>tfw transferred from nursing school to dental hygiene school

All because I didn't want to work in a hospital. I dodged that bullet. Comfy hours, nice, clean office and better pay.
>>
>>37496740

Too late.

I don't mind long shifts, hard work, cleaning people or no recognition. I just don't like talking to them. Ideally I'd work in an emergency room or something, but I'm too stupid for that.
>>
>>37496887

Except nurses are a $50-60k job while doctors make $750k
>>
I just graduated and start orientation tomorrow. I worked the last two years in a psych hospital. Psych is great but now that I have those two magic letters I want to be in a real hospital sticking people and shit, so going into critical care. School was hell but you won't find a job with better hours, flexibility, and opportunities. Pay is pretty awesome as well. How many other two year degrees do you know of that you can have a $60k job lined up before you even graduate?

They say nursing is all about talking and human touch, emotional shit, etc.. It's really not. Our job is to make sure people don't die, whether from their retardation or the physician's. If you aren't so great at talking then work ICU, they can't laugh at you when they are intubated. If they do they will quickly lose that smile once you decide they need another IV line or foley reinserted. Unless that country you're moving to is America don't bother. This is the only place where nursing kicks ass. Everyone else the pay is shit. In the UK they make little more than average national salary. You won't have time for pretending to be normal. As great as it is it is difficult. Especially if you have a penis because the school staff are about half bitter spinsters, you will be singled out. Stay in school and ride that glass escalator. Anesthesia, Informatics, Gerontology NP, there is lots of money to be made. Whatever you do avoid nursing homes and medsurg at all costs. I don't know if my retard classmates actually liked that shit or what but we have all the power in the job hunt. There is no excuse to not get your dream position straight out of school. Do a little networking and honor society if you're worried, but I had to choose between 4 different offers, and got an interview for every application I sent out. This is the closest thing to sure bet you will find in life. If you hate it work psych nights because the nurses don't do shit there. Retire after 10 years and live as a neet.
>>
Props to whoever can actually be a nurse. To me, being a nurse sounds like a shitty job. My older sister is a nurse and she works insane hours, deals with some of the shittiest people you can imagine, and works in likely the most stressful working conditions possible.
>>
>>37496477
>Anyone else here a nurse?

No, I'm not gay
>>
>>37497585
Your sister has rimmed Dr. Thundercock's asshole. How does it make you feel?
>>
>>37497482
Physicians make more like 300-400k. Something like Radiology or dermatology can bring in more than $500k. $750k is above average, you'd have to be a rockstar concierge surgeon for the king or something for that much. There are nursing specialties that pay higher than the physicians make though. Anesthetists are making more than your family medicine guys easily.
>>
>>37497557

>If you aren't so great at talking then work ICU
But that requires knowledge which I don't have. Nursing schools in my country are a joke and together with my idiocy I'm basically a layman with a piece of paper which says I'm a nurse. I'm also almost 28 and I have never worked a day in my life and graduated school almost 10 years ago.

I just want to die.
>>
>>37496985
I'm a doctor in Australia. I haven't specialised yet but I'm going to be some sort of physician (internal medicine in the American system I believe). My job was overall stress levels are not too bad but there are peaks of stress when you attend very unwell patients, do overnight cover or step up to a position with higher responsibility.

>>37496939
What's that nursie, you think I should put bed 5 on q15 minute obs? And beds 3 and 5 need fleet enemas? You better get cracking. Don't forget the bowel chart!

To be serious though, the only ones who pull eighteen days here are the doctors, typically surgeons but also physicians who are on call. No nurse does more than a 12 hour day and if they do it's only for 3-4 shifts a week. You need to get onto your union.

What country are you in and what country are you going to?

Worst case scenario work medsurg a few months to pick up the knowledge like which holes the rectal tube, yankeur, and foley go in. After that move to a step down unit, and then ICU.

US requires we pass boards for license, and then we renew our license periodically while get continuing education credits to maintain so it's hard to offer any good advice without knowing your specifics. There is always corrections or school nursing if you really don't know anything. I'm sure you can clean a wound and bandage it or hand out a tylenol.
>>
>>37497795
>dermatology can bring in more than $500k

HTF does a dermatologist make that much? Just put lotion on it
>>
>>37499076

From a shitty third world country moving to Germany.
I mean, I still know some stuff and I'm trying to go through all of my old books again, but it's just so much stuff. The worst thing is: now I have to learn new stuff, but in a foreign language.
Also, the nursing system is so different in Germany compared to my country. Nurses in my country do stuff that the nurses in Germany don't, but also vice versa: German nurses deal with so much more stuff than the nurses in my country.

>US requires we pass boards for license
Same as in here, but it's all so lax, that anyone can pass them.

I just feel so hopeless. At my age, I should be a veteran by now. Instead I have very superficial theoretical knowledge (with some useless knowledge for nurses too) and very little practical knowledge. It just feels so inadequate and embarrassing.
>>
>>37498893

>put tech on q15s
>lpn on enemas
All that does is make the little guys hate you. I'll say Dr. Jackass is being a cunt again and pretend I have charting to do while checking facebook. There are some nurses who do 24hr shifts, but 12 is the standard. Nurses shouldn't have unions. It's bad enough with shit like plumbers and factory workers. Anyone who would even consider abandoning patients to go on strike should not be a nurse. That's what admin and nurse organizations are for.

I usually don't have a problem with physicians though, just the cocky residents.
>pt has k of 6.x?
>great let's continue the k infusion
>how dare u question my orders im the doctor not u
>>
>>37498893
joke's on you, all of my patients are q15 at least

How it is where I work at least, the on-call doc is there to formally rubberstamp what we need on overnight shift and approve admits to our unit. I appreciate our docs who give a shit but a lot of them do not, that goes for all areas of staff though
>>
>>37497557
I work geri psych nights and I'd agree if we didn't get medical patients with psych staffing, dunno how it is on other psych units though.
>>
>>37499212
That sounds tough and you're being thrown into deep water, but you'll find ways to float. Don't panic and be humble and ask the German nurses for help. As with most jobs, most of the learning happens as you work, and I'm sure every nurse can remember being new and feeling bewildered, and they can appreciate if you're from a foreign country as well. Obviously, some nurses will resent having you if you're a burden, but if you make sincere efforts to make their lives easier in exchange for their tutelage, then I'm sure you'll get along fine enough. If you have finished nursing school, you should have more than a superficial theoretical knowledge. You should understand basic human anatomy and physiology. You may have little practical knowledge now, but you'll quickly learn once you start working.

While you should certainly strive to learn German, it appears that your English is good and in my experience, most Germans speak decent English, so at worst, you can ask for things to be explained in English if you're struggling with German. However, if you plan on working in Germany for a long time, then learning German would only be appropriate.

If you hate talking to people, then consider specializing your nursing career to a field in which patient interaction is a smaller portion of your duties. I'm not a nurse, but I imagine that OR nurses or anesthesia nurses don't have as much constant interaction. Anyway, you're not expected to provide social entertainment for your patients, you're meant to provide them with competent care and comfort. If you manage that, then the vast majority of patients won't mind if you're quiet.
>>
>>37499615

Thanks for the kind words.

I don't mind working hard. I can also speak German at an acceptable level.
It's just that I feel embarrassed for not having decent professional knowledge. Also on a personal level. Not being a master of anything is horrifying. At least for me. It makes life seem pointless. If there's one thing I can admire and which I envy people for, it's profound knowledge in a field or sincere interest in a field.
>>
>>37499212
Maybe a nurse refresher course could help. I've seen stuff posted for 1 or 2 week courses that do a body systems review and some of the legal stuff like charting for people changing specialties and might have forgotten the more general stuff. The allnurses website has a board for international nurses. Starting a thread there might give more specific advice on german nursing or even a link to a site with a course. I'm sure you'll have a preceptor or orientation that can allow you to brush up on the practical skills. Fake it till' you make it. That might be bad advice here but you know what I mean.
>>
>>37499478
I did acute and chemical dependency. I hated the nights I got floated to geri psych. You still get new admits or freak outs on acute but most nights were chill. Especially on the chem unit, most nights there you could take turns sleeping or watching tv in the dayroom while the other nurse watches the phone.
>>
>>37499738
The reason people admire mastery is because everyone knows it takes time, skill, and dedication. Nobody is a master of anything once they've finished school. School just takes you to the foot of the mountain. It will still take years or even decades to hike up the mountain and achieve mastery. If you're worried that you're not up to German standards for a nurse at your point in your career, then maybe you're not, but that doesn't mean you can't be and that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to be. Germans respect competence, but they also respect sincere efforts to improve competence.
>>
>>37499841
If you're the anon I replied to, you are right about the effort floor for psych being stupidly low. You can not give a shit and get away with it so much easier, in no small part because your managers know that replacing you will be a bitch. Pisses me off on my floor especially because those late-stage dementia patients have no way of advocating for themselves. That and people use our unit as respite care or a dumping ground for their inconvenient parents.

When I get floated upstairs to the regular adult unit on nights it's just med pass and admits really, because the turnaround time for a patient is 2-3 days there. A very do-nothing job a lot of the time honestly because non-geri psych clients have no medical issues 90% of the time. It feels like an assembly line for vitals and meds, don't like working There.
>>
Every time I see a pretty nurse I feel sad inside. I get intimidated by them. Then I just want to go back home, crawl in bed and pretend she didn't talk to me softly.
>>
>>37496740
lol 35$ an hour is not shit pay and the hours can be long, but you only jave to work 3 days a week. Thats 4 days of doing whatever the duck you want until you need to work again
>>
I worked as a security guard at a hospital for a year before i got sick of it.
Nurses are awful human beings and they all can go fuck themselves
>>
>>37499319
Damn straight I'm going to continue the K since its only "6.x" because your dumb ass was too stupid to realize that the sample was completely hemolyzed and the last K 2 hours ago was 1.9 on this DKA patient. Either that or you freak out about a k of 1.7 but didnt tell me you drew the blood from a line and didn't waste enough. In the mean time I'm getting hammer paged by your retard colleagues with "doc please renew restraints" except they don't leave the patients info so I have to call back every fucking unit to figure out which retard was paging for which patient
>>
>>37500421
wow rude. im a nurse and am offend

Good.
You people are all fucking sociopaths and shitty human beings.
Ive seen nurses laugh at an elderly woman crying in pain the emcu. Working alongside nurses actually was the biggest redpill against women ive ever seen

>>
>>37502239
Naw you laugh because you have the higjest number of psychos that actually do enjoy seeing people in pain.
Get fucked i see right through you demons.
Thats why i always go out of my way to be as rude as possible to you cunts. Its the only thing to bring you back down to reality

>>
>>37502780
Even if that's true it's not like your r00dness does much. You think nurses don't make fun of security if we're cunts to even the doctors? Hospital security is beneath even mallcops. You guys don't do anything a tech and nurse with syringe full of ativan/haldol/dph can't do better.

Going to be phlebotomist next week. 12 hour shifts drawing blood, 5 days a week along with my 10 hour separate weekend job.

What am I in for, as an autist?
>>
>>37503127
Its funny you think i wasnt aware of this.
I know you assholes think youre better than me. The nurses i worked with made it clear that they thought every security guard there was inferior to them.thats one of the reasons why i quit and got a real job. But its not like what you do is anymore difficult. Sure all i do is stand around butt sitting at a desk all day and logging patients in isnt fucking rocket science. Get over yourself.
>>
>>37503259
80 hours a week and a lot of money. Phlebotomists do fuck all where I work besides push around a cart with the phlebotomy shit.
>>37502780
Stay mad security cunt. The security at my hospital consists of a fat guy with crooked teeth, a fat black dude and this 20 something girl covered in tattoos. All the nurses call them the 3 stooges. They don't know how to talk to people so they just smile like retards whenever you say anything to them. [That's you anon.]
>>
>>37503384
Great.
You just described every security guard ever, except me. Im not fat old or some low iq loser. I literally only took the job because i fell for the comfy security guard meme.
>>
>>37503484
So it was just a meme, right?
>>
>>37503650
Its only a meme in america.
Being a security guard in europe is actually comfy when you work in some quiet village with no niggers and population is like 6k people
>>
>>37502239
>he actually believes this
Did you know Geoffrey Daumer had to get himself drunk whenever he butchered his victims because in his own words, the entire process was just too grim..?
But med students laugh and joke at dead people all the time. Its pretty telling of the kinds of people that go into this profession.
